1. +1 on the pickups & polepieces. To stop the distortion on mine, I ended up lowering the pickups almost all the way down into the surrounds. The bass' output is huge. The pot spindles are quite delicate, they snap into the top of the pot via two little clip/prong things which can very easily break off. As some of mine did, some time ago. They're all OK at the moment, but god help me if they break again. My bass is currently wearing non-original control knobs and I'd love to get some originals for it. My bass is PB1533, & I bought it for £330 in 1986.
2. The Enormous Room is just stunning. It nearly moves me to tears every time. Manring is a genius.
Well, the furry little fellow seems to be a mod of some sort, so they've got more clout that me!
Surely it makes him a "meow-derator"..? Yeah yeah I know, get coat, etc.

Yup, we have a cat. Cute furry little fellow, isn't he? Bless. Y'know, there's nothing quite like having a cat around the... ...hold on..? Oh FFS. You should see what the little sod has just left in my shoes. Grr. If I get my hands on you, you'll be a tennis racquet.
5. I never tire of listening to JB's performance on 'Joe Frazier'... blows my mind every time. I've never heard anything else of his that has come remotely close. His arrogance must be visible from the moon.
6.
I wish I was rich
Nah, being me is highly overrated.
7. Didn't somebody once say "if it sounds right, it is right**"..? I bet he didn't worry about whether it was a demented third or a diminished responsibility or whatever. ** sorry if this has been done already, but to be honest I got through part of this thread and then started to lose the will to live.
8. I think they fit Black Labels at the factory?
9.
my NVQ3 in Customer Service is screaming that if he gives me the cardboard box to sell my bass, I might actually spend the proceeds in his shop one day.
Whereas now your money will be spent elsewhere, and all he's left with is a cardboard box and a riot of bad publicity. What a clown.

Wal's...
With one of these you can get any sound that you want! (even a wal sound!) GAS attack or what? *drool* Anybody know what the going rate for a kidney is these days?
11.
Punter (as I start packing gear): "You were really good for a tribute band."
To which of course the correct response would be, "And you're really chatty for an ignorant twat."
12. Or alternatively, "what's wrong with my subscription?"... I haven't received my copy of the latest issue yet
13. A few years ago I was in a jazz fusion trio... playing in a Bristol jazz venue pub place, we'd just finished murdering a lengthy Bruford tune when this guy approached me... Him: "Oi mate, do you do Paranoid by Black Sabbath?" Me: *stunned silence* Him: "Oh c'mon, you must know it." Me: "Mate, we're a fusion band -- even if we did know it, do you honestly think for a moment that it's the sort of thing we play?" Him: "Yeah go on, you can do it." Me: *glare that says 'f*** off you complete idiot'* "Ahem, I don't think so."
14. +1 for the wiki Long time ago, I used Rotos. They were great until I had a dead G straight out of the pack. Bought another set from a different shop, same thing. So I changed to Elites instead, used them for ages until bugger me if the same thing didn't happen again 2 dead Gs. Wandered in the string wilderness for a bit (tried Labella Slappers, hated them) until I started using Status Hotwires. They were brilliant, but then I found Warwick Red Labels. Not to everybody's tastes, but they're as cheap as blazes and I love 'em. The .130 B in particular is superb.
15. I play exclusively headed basses, but that's purely because I haven't got any headless ones I wouldn't object to one, have played them and quite like them -- the balance and weight improvements are great -- but as Mr.White mentioned above, at first there's an uncanny feeling that you're further up the neck than usual, so you'll find yourself accidentally playing things a couple of tones sharp for a while But yes, deffo try before you buy.
16. At this exact precise moment, it's 'Operation:mindcrime' by Queensryche.
17.
I change my pants every day and my strings probably every 2 months thats almost 15% if my calculations are right. I am also planning on changing my Gas provider (real Gas) that should get it down to a modest 12.5% if interest rates hold again next month.
Do you find your pants are more zingy after you've boiled them?
18. I boil mine in water with a tiny bit of washing up liquid as a de-greaser (only a tiny bit mind, cos it goes mental when it's boiled), pat them dry with a tea towel and then a quick wipe down with some surgical spirit.
19.
but does this work the other way round? For example, do Jazzers occasionally realise it could be beneficial to look outside their genre and take influences from elsewhere, and so listen to a bit of rock/metal/thrash etc?
It certainly does. At one time, all I'd listen to was jazz, fusion, acid jazz, funk, etc. You get the idea. But now my listening tastes are a hell of a lot wider... my walkphone is currently playing host to the likes of AC-DC, RATM and Static-X, for example.
20.
I play for free sometimes too, I even shell out to drive 200 miles to play for free if the craic or cause is right 'cos I love playing. Originals, covers, jam sessions, guest spots, whatever The fees I earn from the band (after tax and expenses) just off set the costs of doing charity and free gigs and it's not my main source of income.
Hear hear, ditto, +1, and so on. I'm in a band of 13 so it has to be a substantial payday to cover more than my diesel and strings, but I'll do it every time because I love playing. That's all the "justification" you're going to get from me, "moral" or otherwise.
21. I can't imagine that Nilsson's "You're Breaking My Heart, So F**k You" would go down all that well...
22. Off-topic alert: Stug, do you own the Challenger in your avatar pic? If so, I'm about to call you a very rude name, preceded by the words "you lucky" End of off-topic bit. Sorry.
