1. Crown XTi1000, a big silver power amp with lots of features and lights and what not. And it's fuppin' loud. 500w per side into 4ohms, or up to 1400w in bridge mono. Lots of clever programs, including a tunable crossover allowing you to bi-amp directly from the amp, and loads of other stuff I've never used. Rackmount, 2U high, roughly 20lbs weight. It's spent its life in my rack, so apart from tiny bits of rack rash it's unmarked. Only gigged a handful of times, and I'm only selling because I've picked up an SWR SM900 and so I don't need a separate power amp any more. This really is a lovely piece of kit. Pick a new one up off eBay for around 500 quid plus p+p (yes, I know you can get them cheap from the US, but by the time you've added VAT and duty they ain't so cheap any more)... or alternatively buy this one for £275 plus shipping. A nearly new kilowatt for 275 quid, c'mon it's a bargain. Tell Santa.
  2.
Completely agree with you. Man, that was... pathetic. Really. My first thought was that was one of those overdubbed fake "shred" videos but apparently it was real. I can see why some people can´t get into Jaco but I have no idea why anyone would dig Cliff Burton.
Absolutely +1. I know it's individual taste and all that, but whenever I see vids of Cliff Burton solos I can't help wondering what all the fuss is about and why Metallica fans still seem to think he's so irreplaceable. BTW, I'm something of a jazzer (but I do like some metal too... see, you can do both), and the only thing I 'fear' about metal is being accidentally caught in the eye by a pointy headstock.
  3. I think it's a good idea, with small inexpensive items -- badges, stickers, that sort of thing.
  4. Aye. I had Nemesis 2x10 and 1x15 cabs up until a while ago, when I swapped the 2x10 for another 1x15. The sound of the two 1x15s is loads better. 2x10+1x15 is not the be all and end all. It's definitely worth checking out other speaker configs (considered 12s at all?).
  5.
And dont forget anyone else's idea of a great sound may not be the same as yours - so do try before you buy if at all possible. Go to your local gigs and see what you like the sound of.

Any opinions on... Ashdown?
Yes. Bleucchhh.
  6.
The much maligned triangle is rather like a bass in that the general public think its an easy instrument to play, and at some levels it can be, but to play it well takes a huge amount of skill. Anyway I have an early 60's Fender Imprecision triangle for sale or exchange. It's got some relicing and the beater and string have been replaced by Gotoh upgrades. Oh and teh bell part was replaced in the 90's with a JV Squier part but te label stiill says Fender .. PM me if you are interested ...
Fancy a trade for my Wal Mach I triangle? Dangles from a piece of finest plaited Venezuelan goat string, with the bell inlaid with Malaysian gnatwood and MOP detailing. PM me if you're interested. Perhaps we can work your Status Graphite cowbell into the deal too?
  7. Looks cool as. Go for it, I reckon. I've tried two DJ5s (P-T-P's, and another one at a show), and they are pretty much the only bass giving me serious GAS now. Wonderful, wonderful instrument.
  8.
good luck with it d-basser. certainly seems a steal for what it is
That's the only thing that worries me about it... 750 quid for such a bass seems a bit too "shift it as quickly as possible". Of course, if it is completely kosher, then I take it all back.
  9.
I'm too shy/responsible
BWAH-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HAAAAAAAAAAA *collapses in protracted fit of uncontrollable mirth*
  10.
7 string guitars, I remember them *shudders*
Don't worry, it's OK to like seven string guitars. Jazzers were using them decades before the poodlehair crowd got their hands on them.
  11.
Lovely bass Reuel - glad to see it's finally arrived safely.
+ the 1. Here endeth the story, in a happy way. Musky, I LOVE your avatar
  12. +2, the old cheap plastic Zooms are bliddy marvellous. I've got a really old 509 Modulator unit. Not bass specific, but who cares when it sounds so good and does such a good headphone job?
  13. 'Allbang & Strummit', anyone Eee, them were the days... bunk off college, £4.80 return from Reading to Paddington, and then a whole day spent drooling over stuff. And there was Tempo Soundhouse in Hanwell, I don't think it's still there... back in the mid/late 80s it was run by a lovely fella called Laurie Keys... he sold me my old Laney Pro-bass combo (21st b/day prez from mum & dad, love 'em) and my fretless Jaydee. Fast forward about 10 years, I had a CD-launch gig in West London and my faithful JD let me down at the last minute... galloped over to Tempo and Laurie was still in charge, bless him he remembered me and lent me a fretless Status for the night. Top banana.

    WHAT....!!!
Maybe you should have got a 4 string fretless Rumour
...he said, without a hint of bias I reckon that no matter what exotica people have as their main weapons, everyone should have at least one Jazz somewhere in their armoury.
  15. Mmmmmmm oh yeah, the Tractor is cooler than Reykjavik in January. Darkstar all the way, gotta be.
  16. My 500 quid has just bought me this: Result *hops excitedly from foot to foot, waiting for it to turn up*
  17. Great gig on Saturday night to a rammed-out and very enthusiastic Fiddlers club in Bristol. Debuted a couple of tunes and a new intro, all went down very well. Crowd were absolutely brilliant, up and dancing from the off, and they never stopped. Just for a laff, we did it in fancy dress... 3 fairies, 2 pirates, a French peasant, a convict, a Mexican wrestler, a clown, a naval officer, James Bond, Al Capone, and Darth Vader Thanks to Matt for coming along! glad you enjoyed it, see you again soon
  18.
You will make back the £299 differential if you do all your food shopping at Iceland for the next 17 years
Or at Aldi for the next 12 days
  19.
Well, I'm very surprised to hear that, father. I didn't think you'd like that sort of thing. I read a bit of one of them once. God, I couldn't finish it. The language, unbelievable! Ah, it's a bit much for me, father. "Feck" this and "feck" that. "You big bastard". Oh, dreadful language! "You big hairy arse", "You big fecker". Fierce stuff! And of course, the f-word, father, the bad f-word, worse than "feck" - you know the one I mean. "Eff you". "Eff your 'effin' wife". Oh, I don't know why they have to use language like that. "I'll stick this 'effin' pitchfork up your hole", oh, that was another one, oh, yes! "Bastard" this and "bastard" that, you can't move for the bastards in her novels! It's wall-to-wall bastards! "You bastard!" You fecker!" "You bollocks!" "Get your bollocks out of my face!" It was terrible.
"'Ride me sideways' was another one..." Ah, Ted... comic genius
  20. I play fives pretty much exclusively these days. I haven't gigged a four in about 5 years now. But I still have fours and I still like playing them. There's no law that says you can't have both and it's pretty easy to change between them once you get used to the five.
  21.
I ay have just won a beautiful MM5 for £660 oops
If there is a Mrs.phil_the_bassist, does she know? If not, then it looks like commiserations
  22. Recent soundcheck. I'm not as miserable as I look, honest
  23. London is I guess the obvious choice, but as others have said or hinted, be prepared for the living costs. They are monstrous. A 2 bed flat that costs you 600 quid to rent in the provinces will cost you a grand easily in the Smoke. It's not for nothing that big companies give their London staff 'London Weighting' on their salaries.
I realised that at the age of 25, living in Reading. I then spent seven years in central London building up my non-bass career, before escaping to Yorkshire.
Let's face it, anywhere is great after Reading. I lived there for 23 years *shudder*
  24.
A new thread topic methinks!
'Tis done
  25. Unfortunately not. No matter how many times the rest of us ask.
