Action

Well what with Bristol being a Uni town, I understand that many of the clubs are pretty good on Friday & Saturday nights... Ah. Not that sort of action. Whoops, sorry. You pretty much said it yourself... it's a personal thing. The default height is whatever feels best for you. Sorry if this is a bit vague! Your best bet is to take your bass to a friendly repair/service bod and get him to sort it out.
  2. "Good morning, The Bass Centre." "Ah, hello, I'd like to blow a thousand quid on a bass without even having clapped eyes on it first, never mind actually playing it." "Well you've come to the right place! And while you're committing yourself sight-unseen to a very major instrument purchase, can I also interest you in splashing out even more of your hard-earned on an amp that you have no idea whether you'll like or not?" For god's sake.
  3. The Fiddlers in Bristol last night... being January we weren't expecting much, but it was a belter. Great crowd well up for it, and our very own joegarcia behind the desk... I've heard nothing but excellent reports on the FOH sound, most of them being of the "best sound you've had at the Fiddlers" variety. The only sad thing is that it was Dr.Liz's last gig on alto sax... she's off, taking her shiny new medical degree to pastures new. Gonna miss her.
  4. I'd like to try one, but just out of curiosity really. The looks alone are enough to put me off, and the sound Mr.King gets out of his is diabolical. I really hope they're capable of a bit more low-end than he gets.
  5. Excellent review, first class stuff. The colour is uber-yuck and the bridge is far too antiquated for my liking, but tonally it seems to be a lot more versatile than I was expecting. I would definitely want to blend the two pickups, so yes either the internal mod or an outside unit -- either the ABY box or perhaps a little 2-channel mixer?

    BASS BASH MARCH 2008

Yay, I think I might even be able to make it to this one! If so, I'll bring

Shuker J-5
Status S1 five (perhaps)
Wal Pro IIE
Focusrite/Crown rig
Nemesis cabs x2
7. Can not believe that Weckl and Chambers have only had one mention so far...
  8. What's on it? Wouldn't mind a copy if it's anything interesting
  9.
In the duo, we just wear what we turned up in (which is appropriate to the occasion). I play a black Variax. Black. Black, like the endless night. They keep me in the cellar and feed me pins. Mother, my eyes are pies.
I think we'd better go home now Johnny...
  10. We all wear work shirts, you know the sort of thing... short sleeved shirts with nametags and so on. I've got three motor-racing pit crew shirts that I bought for peanuts off fleaBay: a Subaru rally one, blue with gold logos and stuff; a Seat BTCC one, yellow with silver logo and things; and a Mitsubishi rally one, white with red logos. The Scooby one looks best but it's very heavy cotton and can be v.hot. The Mitsy one is my current favourite. Although all our shirts are different colours, it does provide something of an identity as they are all the same type of garment -- thus giving a uniform look without being uniform, if you see what I mean.
Did a dep gig with the band on before The Wurzles a while back. They all turned up in their Armani suits and then put on the stage kit, just like Status Quo are rumoured to do ..
Damn... and there I was thinking that they spent the whole time dressed as village idiots...
  11. For me there are two 'The One's, and I own them both... one is called Wal, the other's called Shuker. At some point, I'd like to have a fretless The One as well.
  12. MOSFET? Isn't that what a rolling stone gathers none of..?
  13. Yup, I love jazz too. I like bebop, I adore fusion, & I loathe trad-jazz with every fibre of my being.
  14.
I've always thought looking down a bass from the headstock or up from the bridge gives the best view. Unfortunately this is the biggest version of the picture I could find!
Yes, I rather like 'em too. Someone took this shot of li'l ol' me at a recent gig, I love it:
  15. And what a fabulous pic of the great man it is too. Still sadly missed. Here's another classic:
  16.
Ask Nicky Wire - he plays them. Ooops, sorry, he pretends to, probably not the best endorsement come to think of it....
When I saw the Manics in Cardiff last year his bass sound was, I have to say, absolute pants. The only interesting thing about him was that he had a large 2112-era Rush logo on the breast pocket of his jacket.
  17.
So far I have The Bass Of Death, Ye Basse Of Olde, A Bass Named For The Decline Of Industrial Britain and now I have to think of a name for the frankojazz I've nearly finished.
How about Frank O'Jazz, after the well known Irish fusion bassist?
  18. I had an SWR Triad cab for a while, bought it off CK in fact. It was a lovely sound, not massively loud in terms of the dB figure but a very rounded pure hifi sound. I'd have kept it if it hadn't been such a heavy bugger.
  19. The main live rig now looks like this -- it's getting its first major outing on New Year's Eve in Cheltenham: Trantec wireless, Yamaha FX, Focusrite Trakmaster preamp, and Crown XTi-1000 power amp. The cabs are still the Nemesis 2x10 and 1x15. The first time I cranked it up in my garage, my bike toppled over and a shelf fell off the wall. Mission accomplished.
  20. The front looks ok-ish, in a very 'ish' sort of way... shame the sander's got the edges more than the flat of the body. The back however is crap beyond belief. Even if I hated a bass, I wouldn't made it look like that. What in the name of almighty Zarquon possessed him?
  21.
aside the shape of the box and the fact my dad told thats what he was getting and asked me which one i wanted? In have a nack for guessing
How gutted are you gonna be if it turns out to be socks and shower gel in a big box?
  22. If I have a drink before a gig, it's nothing stronger than a pint of shandy, because a] I'm invariably driving and b] I don't want it to affect my playing, and it's only the one pint or I'll be busting for a slash halfway through the set. The nature of my job means that Jazz-Woodbines are out of the question these days, but even if I could partake I wouldn't before a gig.
  23.
It will be daytime/midweek though
This year, or next?
  24. Any luthier worth his salt will listen to and accommodate pretty much anything you want -- unless what you want is an unworkable load of old bollocks, in which case any luthier worth his salt will tell you that it's an unworkable load of old bollocks.
