I used to have an old Quadraverb, I bequeathed it to CK. I found many of the sounds to be very useful (although surprisingly when you consider the name, the reverbs are pretty crap)... the chorus settings in particular are very flexible. The ability to change the waveforms and so on gives a wide variety of sounds... it even does a very passable impression of an old Yamaha E10xx delay unit's 'wobble'. Can't remember any specifics though, sorry... was a while ago now.

Oh thank almighty Zarquon, I was starting to think it was just me that hated the things. I've tried Ashdown amps stuff a number of times, and I've tried really hard to like them, but no. To my ears they just sound horrid unless you apply a ton of EQ -- for me, if an amp doesn't sound OK with the EQ flat, then forget it.

*slap* sort the flat out first. You can sit and play bass in a house, but you can't live in a bass amp (possible exception of an 8x10 combo).

Well I'm in a 13-piece band, so let's face it I'm never going to make any money out of it ... but I'd sooner cut off my nads with a teaspoon than give up simply because of that. Don't sell up completely. Keep a bass and an amp of sorts, even if it's only a wee one. I guarantee if you sell it all, you'll regret it. Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow etc.

I use an Antex Gascat butane gas iron for everything, it's bloody marvellous. Use it anywhere, no mucking about with mains and such... just the job for that emergency cable repair at the soundcheck. It's brilliant for heat-shrink sleeving too. I've got several different tips for it ranging in style and size, so I can use the one iron for lots of different jobs. I cannot recommend it highly enough. I like to use a tiny bit of flux here and there... I know modern multicore solders have flux in them, but for some things a little bit extra really helps the solder flow and makes for a clean joint.

+1 for the Procells. Like synaes said, you can pick them up for peanuts on fleaBay -- the last lot I bought were 10 for £7.

The best combination I've ever had was Ken Smith bass (borrowed, unfortunately) into Eden head. The two are made for each other.

The last show I went to was basically two hours on the road for little more than overly-loud software demonstrations and a huge bunch of spotty teenagers trying desperately to out-widdle each other. And the ones on the guitars were even worse. There was almost nothing of interest bass-wise, the sole exception being the good Doctor with his E-Basses. Apart from that it was a low-end desert. I wouldn't have minded picking up a bargain, but all I left with was the prospect of a two hour journey home. So I won't be going to this one.
