Following on from bj_rocke's Amp/Cab thread about his almost-immediately expiring Ashdown head, what's your briefest customer-satisfaction experience? Have you had an amp that went *phut* on its first night? A cab that blew its drivers at the first watt? I've been very lucky so far... the only kit that has ever let me down was my old Laney PB150 ProBass 4x10 combo (remember them?), which blew one of its cones and then developed a dry joint. However, I'd had it 10 years when the driver went and the dry joint was 3 years after that, so it did well... EDIT: come to think of it, one of the pots on my Wal went kaput once too. But I'd had it for 9 years by then.
If I ever purchase Ashdown equipment; it'll be s/h, tried and tested on ebay or Basschat.
If I ever purchase Ashdown gear, it'll be a very cold day in a very hot place. Tried a rig with ABM head and 4x8 + 1x15 cabs the other night, and the sound reminded me why I dislike Ashdown stuff so much. Bleucchh. Still, horses for courses innit? I have to agree with Waldo though, 15 minutes has gotta be some sort of record... I think we need a thread along the lines of "What's the shortest you've had a piece of gear before it failed/blew up/broke?"..!

I could be seriously tempted by one of their cheapo acoustic basses... certainly look the part.

For me, multiple speakers (e.g. 2x10) are 2-by-10, whereas single speakers (e.g. 1x15) are one-fifteen. Eh-pee-FAW-nee? hmmm sounds pretty crap to my ears Although I expect they think my surname sounds pretty stupid too Think I'll stick with 'eh-PIH-funnee' unless I ever meet one of them
Hartke - Har-keee
Blimey, I'd always used 'Har-kuh'. I stand corrected.
His name on basstalk was Rich, does anyone know if he is on here, or does anyone know who he is in general?
"Who is Keyser Soze? He is supposed to be Turkish. Some say his father was German. Nobody believed he was real. Nobody ever saw him or knew anybody that ever worked directly for him, but to hear Kobayashi tell it, anybody could have worked for Soze. You never knew. That was his power. The greatest trick the Devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist." Ahem. Sorry You have a PM.
I don't understand this whole issue Talkbass has had a filter on for years true it didn't change it cockney slang it just **** it out, so the Cockney stuff (which I don't understanda word that is being said) is just Kiwi having a laugh in the word replacement I'm sure it can be made to just be boring and **** but if you shouldn't really need to swear in your day to day conversations (This is from some one who swears profusely) its simply not needed on any forum and I don't know any that really allow it anyways? If ya need to call some one a harsh name you can do it in a PM can't we Kiwi ya ************************** see now you don't know what I'm talking about shoe's on the other foot now
Absolutely agree with all the above. There's no need for swearing all over the place and the rhyming slang is just a bit of a giggle really, and anyone finding it an infringement of civil liberties or whatever really needs to a) chill out and be) get a sense of perspective.

At one time, Status fitted a 36v preamp to their Jonas Hellborg models. -- the preamp was pretty much the EQ section from a channel strip. Apparently the output from these basses was simply colossal.
I've got one of these in my rack Sound Tech 802 2 x 400W 4ohm 2 x 230W 8ohm 1 x 800W 8ohm bridged Maybe not the lightest but a nice 1U amp and on sale at the moment for £299. Pete.
Yeah, I had one of these for a while. Triffic little thing. OK, so at 15lbs it's not as light as the AI one but let's face it, just how light do you want? 7kg is hardly SVT territory is it??
Mmmmmmm..tuna steak.. ^_^
Ohhh yes... properly cooked (or indeed raw) it's a thing of beauty. But there are few things worse than an overcooked one...

Well, I've always found the bottom end of the neck too chunky -- I have silly stumpy little fingers, so a more Jazz-like neck suits me down to the ground. The only P-style bass I've ever enjoyed playing is Si Oldgit's gorgeous Shuker P-5... other than that, they simply aren't my cup of Lapsang. Still, horses for courses eh? Vive la difference!
-
I've always thought the Kingbass (or rather, MK's Kingbass sound) to be very thin and gutless. Bring back the Jaydees, or better still, the GBs..!
-
Alex, this is all very well, but you've missed the really important question. Do you, or do you not, like tuna on your pizza?
Is it just me or is it becoming increasingly apparent that putting in an honest days graft is just too much for many people?
I put in a pretty standard white-collar 37.5-hour working week. There's a bit of a difference between that and "8-12 hours a day, 5/6 days a week". There's really no need for those sort of hours at the age of 16, and if someone doesn't want to work that sort of schedule, it doesn't make them lazy or idle. I certainly don't consider myself to be any sort of slacker.
lol, I was going to edit the post then I realised no one would have a clue what you were talking about, so I've left it in. Actually "evening out the sound" is best done in conjunction with treating the neck.
And presumably the tweaking, plucking and slapping comes later after the romantic meal and the fancy-coming-back-to-mine-for-coffee..?

Do my eyes deceive me, or is that string really 5mm thick..??? Oh, and if you're getting a string deal from Warwick, put in a good word for me eh?
-
I would LOVE a string deal. Ahem. Buy WARWICK strings, that's WARWICK strings, 'cos they're really really good. Don't forget, that's WARWICK strings. D'you reckon that would do it?
-
I had one of those expensive looking Wolf/Mazeti 6-string fretless basses for a while. It played really well (when sitting down, anyway) and sounded superb. Terrible neck-dive though, very very neck heavy.
-
Bank transfer only? AVOID at all costs. If there's no option for picking it up in person and paying cash (& not even Paypal), forget it. Shame, 'cos it does look bloody nice too.
-
Yeah, the MIDI Mouse is a cute little thing. I've got one and it's great.
-
I got mine from the Bass Centre, remarkably they actually had them in stock at the time. Anderton's in Guildford also do them.
-
I recently got hold of an old TE dual comp pedal too, and it's just as good as I remember it being on my old SMX head. Marvellous thing. Incidentally, for anyone who hasn't read it, I can recommend BOD2's excellent sticky on the whole subject of compression and limiting and so on.
-
BOD, that is one of the most useful & informative FX articles I have ever read. Many thanx. I was quite intrigued by the idea of an “evening out” of the overall sound... do you take it to the pub? The flicks? A romantic meal for two?
-
Well, the Akai works for me simply because: a} I've already got one, and b} I can't be arsed to flog it and get a load of separates I don't use a synth effect all that often anyway, so for my limited needs it's just fine. Just out of interest, which individual stomps do you use to get your synth sounds Joe? Don't worry, you don't have to give away any closely guarded secrets

I have the Eden Nemesis NSP115 1x15" (plus horn) cab -- very dinky, very lightweight ported cab. Handling 250W RMS Frequency Response 38hz - 18khz ±2dB Sensitivity 100dB SPL@1W1M Impedance 8ohms Dimensions 24.75"w x 17.25"h x 16.25"d Weight 32 LBS Absolutely brilliant VFM if you ask me... very loud and sounds great (not tons of ultra low-end due to its small dimensions, it'd never make a dub reggae cab, but the small-and-light-ness is why I bought it, so I don't care!). I also have the Nemesis NSP210 2x10" (again, plus horn) cab -- again it's very dinky and lightweight, obviously being 10s it's a lot punchier and less warm than the 115. Handling 300W RMS Frequency Response 35hz - 18khz ±2dB Sensitivity 102dB SPL@1W1M Impedance 4 or 8ohms Dimensions 24.75"w x 16.25"h x 16.25"d Weight 47 LBS I'd take some of those figures with a pinch of salt... it's definitely not 15lbs heavier than the 115 for a start, their weights are very close. Like the 115 it's very loud for its size... check the sensitivity figures. The 115 and 210 do go very well together, although on reflection I wish I'd tried a pair of the 115 cabs out too... I love these cabs, especially the 115 (as you can probably tell!), the only problem with them is that the HF horn has no attenuator and can be very harsh. I have disabled the horn on the 210 cab, but it is possible to make an adjustment to reduce its output somewhat. That notwithstanding, I think they're brilliant.... for my money, far and away the best in their price range. And here they are together (the basses give an idea of scale)...
