*FIXED* Crackling amp doing my head in.

Back to the drawing board. No crackling on setting up no matter how hard I play but soon as the first number starts it goes crazy. -
*FIXED* Crackling amp doing my head in.
goingdownslow replied to goingdownslow's topic in Repairs and Technical
Had a poke and fiddle with the headphone jack whilst playing and couldn't get it to crackle but I've now given the socket a spray with contact cleaner and inserted a jack multiple times. As I said I have not been able to replicate this fault at home and Tuesday is the next time it will be used in a band setup so I will have to wait and see. -
I have a Hartke Kickback combo which I have had since new in 2001. I've never had a problem with it until recently when it has started to make loud crackling noises when I'm playing. What is doing my head in is it won't do it at home. I have the head unit opened up and I've poked around whilst playing, tapping on the circuit board, poking wires and components to no avail. When setting up at the gig it is ok, then into the first number it starts. It seems to be keeping up with the drums which makes me think it is a bad/dry joint somewhere but I can't locate it. It is not anything else in the chain as last week after it kicking off in the first number I swapped over to a backup head using all the same leads into the same speaker and there were no problems. Right now I have the amp set up at home, same settings from the gig, and I'm playing through it whilst a mate thumps on the cab with a rubber mallet (stop laughing at the back) and it is behaving itself. Any suggestions how I can trace this fault?

On a closer look, what I thought was the corner joint opening up it turns out to be a laminate of ply. Although I still have the box it was delivered in I thought it now not worth the effort to return it and to fix it myself. I opened the laminate a bit more and injected some pva wood glue into it then clamped it up. I'll see how it is tomorrow.

The headstock does not look right with those wimpy looking machine heads.

To stop neck dive on my EB3 I pass the strap behind my belt.

Has anyone had this happen to their cab... noticed it about a week ago, it's 2 months old and been in the living room since delivery. It flexes under a bit of pressure. Wondering the best way to go, attempt a repair (no idea what yet) or return.

Thiele Small parameters for 'classic' speakers?
goingdownslow replied to Stub Mandrel's topic in Amps and Cabs
I had this McKenzie spec sheet from somewhere... also Win Isd Pro (alpha) has a database of a lot of old speakers, eg... -
It only does it when there is a signal present but the signal does not appear to be degraded.

Thanks for that, Stew. Reason was you may have seen my other thread last month where I mentioned this problem and sent my amp back with replacement stock not due until June. I was so impressed with the amp that I was prepared to wait sooner than have a refund, however I noticed yesterday on G4Ms site they had one left in stock so I emailed them asking when the stock arrived as I had heard nothing regarding my replacement. The reply was it was now on the way to me, but no answer as to where it came from. I had my thoughts, and when it arrived this morning I was right, it was the amp I had returned, I had noted the serial number before sending it back. After letting it get to room temp (it felt like it had just come out of cold storage) I tested it and it was exactly the same. Doesn't look like it had been opened. Other than this noise when turning the control I can't fault the amplifier and am beginning to wonder if that is just how they are. I had max gain without clipping and bass about 3o'clock, it seems the more bass heavy the note the worse it is. The 'dirty' noise starts from zero to about 2 or 3 and as you say seems to disappear as the volume of the note gets louder. As said, other than that I like it and want to keep it but worried that it may be a problem that could get worse. Still, it has a 2 year warranty.

Can someone with one of these amps please do me a favour.... set it up with max gain without clipping and master volume right down, play a note while turning the master volume up and down. Is it a clean change of volume or is there any 'interference' like a scratchy pot sort of noise?
-
Did he say what the parking and load in is like?
-
I won't play in Liverpool town centre and it is my city.
-
Was it enough to expose your skeleton?

Looks like I'll still be lugging the heavy stuff for a while longer as the 'Fizzy' sound is back and is also linked with turning the master volume control. Although it sounds like a scratchy pot the note can also have a sizzle to it without even turning the volume control.

My 16 year old Ford Focus estate bit the dust last year and as I also have a Mazda Mx5 bought at the same time but hardly used (only just clocked 12,000 miles) I decided against buying another car and get some use out of the Mazda. Ok, I can't get my main rig in it (Ampeg 3-Pro and 6x10), but by taking out the passenger seat I can get my Hartke Kickback 15 or a 2x10 and TE 350 SMX in. I do some gigs with a band with a van so that can take care of the Ampeg stuff. Anyway, I decided I could do with reducing the weight and after reading some of the reviews on here I thought I would give the Bugera a try, for £208 it wouldn't break the bank. It arrived yesterday. On unpacking it I found it was freezing cold so I left it for an hour or so to acclimatise before powering up. I tried it on a 2X10 and noticed a 'fizz' to the sound, I hadn't used the cab for a few months but it was ok at that time, I checked all connections were sound but this 'fizz' was still there but it gradually faded away and did not come back even after turning the amp off for a while. Did it just need running in? I took it to a gig in Manchester last night and after setting up my Ampeg SVT3-Pro and 6x10 I hooked up the Bugera and was impressed by the sound (still no fizz), I felt I could get a similar sound to my Ampeg and that it could also go too loud. I swopped back to the SVT for the gig but I'm looking forward to using it at some smaller gigs I do.

Araldite Rapid.

The pivot hole being so near the edge, the roll pin being an interference fit and the pressure of that big spring does not a good design make.

From the LaBella M42 page http://www.labella.com/products/m42-stainless-rounds-custom-light-40-100/ ...though with the fact that they don't seem to be available anywhere anymore, you may be right.

1968 Gibson EBO Short Scale String Recommendation
goingdownslow replied to rumblefish's topic in Accessories and Misc
I have been using LaBella M42S on my EB3 but I am trying to source a new supplier after the demise of Stringbusters, the only place I had been able to get them. Unless someone knows of another source. -
Stringbusters were the only place I could get LaBella M42S strings from. I settled on them after trying a few other brands and have only one set left. Does anyone know of another source for LaBella short scale roundwounds 40-60-80-100?

This happened to one of mine about two years ago, I enquired over a replacement part but they sent me a new stand. Not being one who likes waste I set to repair it by making a U shaped bracket using a thin metal strip ( it was the strap from an electrical earth clip I had knocking around) and araldited it in. I have been using it since, new one is still in the box.

The links in the OP have changed, hopefully these should work... https://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:QdjVfOZPCgkJ:https://www.gibson.com/Guitar/USACYC512/les-paul-junior-tribute-dc-bass-coming-soon+&cd=1&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=us https://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:E27TEnec_R8J:https://www.gibson.com/Guitar/USAKUC232/Thunderbird-Bass-Coming-Soon+&cd=1&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=uk I wonder what happened to the association with Babicz ? I thought it a far better bridge than what they have gone back to.
