5.
My original post posed the theory that there aren't the players to motivate kids. Love him or loathe him, when Mark King came on the scene, people were crazy to learn bass. Ditto with Flea. I also agree with the 'Guitar Hero' theory. Kids want it to be as easy as playing that game. On the other side of the coin I have seen young kids progress to ridiculous standards, and now attend jazz schools etc. I would seriously recommend watching Victor Wooten's last DVD, as he explains the 'language of music' very well.
I like that Wooten quote Pete. If you liken playing the bass (or music generally) as a speaking a language then: Brain fart ensues:- - there are some who learn a language by spending time in another country and they pick up the lingo by listening and spending time with the locals and can mimic, they often absorb the "emotion" of the language too, but often they can't explain the theory or the grammar behind the language. But they speak, and are understood and listen and understand. However, this can be a little restrictive in that their vocabulary can be narrow and the accent they've adopted may not be "transferable" in another part of the country, let alone another country. - there are those who study a language, are taught by tutors who explain and break down the grammar, they are taught and understand structure (often the roots (greek perhaps) of a language enable the student to have a broader grasp of other foreign languages). These students may never visit the country, and may never absorb the emotion of the language, but they too can speak and be understood and listen and understand. For me, the best is both. Study to broaden your vocabulary and understanding, but go listen to the locals talk. Study, listen and PLAY. Sorry about that, probably all clap trap,..........please ignore. John
6. I advertise as a bass tutor, but I still get inquiries for guitar lessons. I would say that, including the schools I teach in and private students, only 25% are bass students. I have picked up a few bass students from lazy (guitar) teachers who have either gone down the "riff" road, or have insisted on sticking to their own preferred genre, or in one case used the student's playing to noodle to, in an attempt to impress. One thing I do say to a new bass student is, if they take their instrument seriously, there's work out there. But I agree, there are hundreds of wannabe guitarists who think that Guitar Hero is an instructional video. One lad brought his DS with GH to a lesson as he wanted my "help" to get it to the next level, so I put it on the top shelf. Suffice to say he didn't bring it again. I guess the bass player on the whole has been seen as the one "at the back", the "steady" one, and who wants to be a "steady Eddie" when you can be a retard geetard in a leotard?
7.
Oh, and Oxfam has got a bit pricey these days, tip from me and the wife, any charity shop with offal in the name is still good and cheap, kidneys, hearts, livers etc. Go to the offal shops my friend.
8. Replied to PM.
9. Pooh, lots of pooh! An unexpected bill this weekend has meant that I must sell something to pay it. I won't sell my amp/cabs or my Jazz bass, so this is the only thing I have left, as my Bassix has no interest, which is a bugger as I've only had this less than a week. Great bass, got it from here. I've restrung it with DR Fatbeams and put schaller straplocks on. Comes in a hard case. I have contacted by PM those who expressed an interest in the original sales thread, but no replies, so it's here. I want what I paid for, which was a steal at £300, no offers please. I'll put some pics up tomorrow. It's a lovely dark blue (which I can't find any images of) and has the "Tribute" logo on the bridge and headstock. The bass is in excellent condition. This is the spec and a picture of one in another colour. John
10. When I play on stage, I always like to make a bit of an effort on the old clothes front (probably a throw back to the 70's when the bands tried to look better than the audience), nothing spangley, or lycra at my age, but dress up a bit, You know, black shirts/troos/pointy shoes/, or black suit with something red underneath,,,,blah, blah Anyway Friday night's gig with Hollywood Killers, I get my clobber on and realise it's all from Charity Shops, I was a complete walking advert for "Man at Oxfam". So wondered, does anyone else get their slightly quirky stage clothes from cast off's from the fat/rich/dead? Or am I the only saddo who does this? Or wouldn't you dare be seen in anything from a "Charidy" shop mate?
11. I'm not up for buying any stuff right now, but just wanted to say sorry that you're not playing any more. I hope maybe one day you'll pick up a guitar again. And best wishes with the sale (I think that P bass may have been mine once, gert lush P) John
12.
Terribly sorry, there was a nonsense post on this thread from an new user that's now been removed and I feel my comments on that post have derailed your thread. My sincere apologies.
Hey no worries TPJ, just wondering what was happening. Thanks for explaining (and the free bump). John
13. Confused of Dorset here.....what's going on, what hack?
14. I know what you mean. I recently got rid of all my basses, apart from my Jazz bass. It does all I want.................until............... All was going well until I saw a G&L SB-2 on here this week and bought it. Now I'll be gigging that tonight coz I love the huge voice of the Pups on this. So....will I end up just using that??? It's an ongoing thing with me, and if you'd sell me your L2500, maybe I'd never use the Jazz or the SB-2 again, coz for me the L2500 are such good all rounders. Man I feel for you, I hate these decisions.
15. That seems criminally low. This means currently on Ebay you could end up buying 2 mini 4x8's and a mini 1x15 for £250. Why no love??
16. This is a nice guitar, new, and going cheap.
17.
Sure, PM me with an address and it shall be yours. Make sure it's the one you need (voltage, etc) John
All done.
18.
hey man, I wouldnt mind the adapter if that would be great?
Sure, PM me with an address and it shall be yours. Make sure it's the one you need (voltage, etc) John
19. Bought a G&L SB-2 from Tim, perfect condition, fast delivery, lots of communication throughout.....brilliant. Thanks Tim, John
20.
Not surprised, what a steal!
I did not steal it your honour, it fell into my arms when the lorry moved off........
21.
I know lots of people dislike the guy, because of what they read and see of him in the meejah, but this isn't about that.
So glad you put that in silddx, hopefully the thread can continue to be about him as a musician. Saw the Police when they supported Ten Years After way back in late 70's, then again when Walking on the moon had just charted. Sting was the most "energetic" musician I had ever seen live, blew me away both times. Great songs, vox and bass lines. Whatever material of his I have listened to, he seems to use space really well, "less is more" kind of thing (most of the time). I also like the way he has explored different genre since the Police days. Not all his material is to my taste, but I respect him as a musician, totally. John
22. In Double bass/EUB section http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...mp;#entry935487
23. Ok, will probably regret this, but I've bought a second acoustic upright and need to sell something to meet part of the bill. So as this Bassix doesn't get played as much as my acoustic DB, this has to go. It's the basschat EUB "bike" as it's done the rounds here. It has 1 x piezo chamber pickup, 1 x 4 pole pickup at end of fretboard. These are fed to the on board preamp/3 band eq, which also has 4 settings. These 2 pups can be balanced too, using the knob on the body. But they can also be mixed with the (adjustable) bridge pickup, via a K&K 2 channel pre amp. This gives an amazing variation of tones, from slap to dark boom. What I liked most about this was the chambered body gives the sound an acoustic quality. I play in a quartet playing Django/Westen swing/20's stuff and the band like a "true" sound, and this didn't disappoint. It is currently strung with eurosonic strings, as I like their gut sound. http://www.gollihurmusic.com/product/1250-...RINGS_SETS.html It comes with a fleece lined gig bag and an EUB stand. It has battle scars as it is a gigged instrument. But I have kept good care of it since it came into my possession, so no further scrapes. I'm in Dorset and would prefer pickup/meet, but it does come with a "coffin" for courier but I think it is expensive to post. Feel free to ask me any questions.
