1. Haha, just a did a search for these on this section, and realised no-one else likes them... cheap, like me!!
2. First off, congrats on getting the gig, wish Cornwall was a little nearer and I'd be there. Secondly, you are a proper musician, in a proper band, doing a proper gig (whatever proper means), so hold your head high, don't worry about the other band and do what you do well. You are there on merit I assume?! Thirdly, I have never met the other band so I can't make an informed judgement, but be prepared to be welcomed by them, or ignored. Headline acts can be great towards the other bands, or complete twats, just like life. People are people and sometimes there behaviour (good or bad) can be exaggerated when they have a guitar/mic in their hands. Got drunk with Southside Johnny & been ignored by headliners in pub bands........nuff said. You just be you and don't forget to buy the sound guy a pint (but not too many before your set!!), it's worth it. Good luck with the gig, enjoy.
3. Fitted these to the Bassix EUB I've just bought from here. I'm loving them, anyone else used them?
4. Saddle height adjustment, could be a problem?...........hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha....ha....ha.............ha....
5.
If you can advise me on something, anything please do.
Take this opportunity and don't waste it....but most of all enjoy it!
6. Jake sold me his Bassix EUB, arrived next day. Brilliant! Thanks Jake. John
7.
Just got back in. It was bloody warm tonight
Haha and some! Good gig? Good vibe around town I thought.
8. 2 BC'ers playing in Salisbury tonight. Deaver & Olslapper. See replies above.

10. Solid body (not chambered) EUB, with headphone, CD/MP3 inputs. It's one of these, but bought from Thomann 6 months ago. http://www.gear4music.com/Woodwind-Brass-S...-Gear4music/8HS Comes with gig bag, lead, bow and rosin and is in very good nick. The action was lowered by a luthier and it plays very easily. It would suit someone wanting to take their first journey into EUB/double bass country without a huge outlay. Or if you want something more easily transportable. I have regularly gigged this with a jazz quartet and it holds it's own sound wise very nicely, and the band are quite traditional regarding sound/tone. Reason for a sale is I've just bought a Bassix which I've fancied for a while. Cheers, John Please feel free to PM with (reasonable) offers. I am happy for it to be collected obviously, but am up for delivering/meeting within 1 hours drive? I do have the original box, so could post, but it would probably be very expensive?
11.
Normally I'd have have come along but we're playing the Royal George as part of the same thing that night. Any other Basschatters on the bill for Salisbury Live?
Have a great gig Deaver.
12. We're playing the Salisbury Festival this Friday, headlining. Details on link below. Come and watch me play root note quavers for an hour!!!! http://www.hollywoodkillers.com/ http://www.salisburyfestival.co.uk/event.aspx?id=346
13. Bought one off here, with Bartolini pup, J East pre amp (18v) and Schaller tuners.....great bass, great sound. So with the last post in mind, they do need upgrades to make them into "decent" basses (whatever that means). But I've done that with most "stock" Mexican Fenders I've bought. Good solid bit of timber, and yes I've had to dress 1 fret, but thats all.
14. Just a bump for those who didn't see first time round. Really appreciate it if anyone fancies giving me hand on the day, not sure for what yet, but just helpful if anyone's up for making the odd cup of tea.....no., Not THAT kind of tea!
15.
I didn't say its because someone plays any more notes so dont put words where arent any....ask a session player which is technically and musically superior to play....its quite obvious....it's like comparing the graphics of Tom and Jerry to -say, Avatar.
Obvious?? Mmm? As an inferior musician I guess it's time for me to pack up bass playing, which is a shame as it's my job....now where did Skank go? Think I'll join him...."skank! Skank!..." TTFN
16.
Like i said b4 -If you've been playing for any amount of time or are any kind of decent musician you will know the Level 42's records are musically and technically superior to RHCH just by listening, or watching. Have a look at this, you might learn something from him....lol http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3CFPVdJKI9g
I can't see by what measure you are judging this. Musically? Superior songs? Superior production? What?? People buy "records" for different reasons, most (I would argue) because they like the finished product when they play it on their chosen medium, as it (hopefully) moves them emotionally, or it "resonates" lyrically, etc. I could suggest that RCHP/Flea is musically "superior" as his bass lines are simpler and sit within the "whole" of the songs usually. That also could make RCHP/Flea "technically superior" for the same reason. I'm not always convinced by the argument that, as someone plays a lot of notes (albeit very well) in a song, it makes them technically or musically superior....sorry. My fav bass lines are often I, V (2 to the bar). But at least I know now that after 35 years of playing bass, I am not a decent musician.
17. +1 on the Earthworks circa 1990. I saw them in Bristol with Tim Harries on Upright and Electric, great player. First time I'd really noticed good use of "space" in that type of music, which made the "flurries" even more noticeable/appreciated.
18.
I've got a precision at the moment and it's a bit too "growly" for me. I'd like something a bit smoother if that makes any sense.
I'd say the humbucker on these is smoother than a P, but I guess string choice can also affect "tone". Certainly more flexible than any P I've owned (still got 2). Used mine in a covers band and it "covered" all the material.
19. These are great basses for the buck. German Warwick, no nonsense, reliable bass. Surprisingly versatile too, with coil tap on the volume knob. I used one for ages, still had a bit of growl to it, never had a problem with it. Wish I'd kept it.
20.
Some are cheaper, some more expensive. Innovation strings (inc Honeys), made in UK, are cheaper over here. www.soundpost.co.uk sell them about as cheap as anywhere.
Thanks Paul. After I posted this, I thought "this is a bit of a 'how long is a piece of string' question really"... John
21. Bass player wanted as above. The band is an 8 piece established function band, playing a good range of covers for weddings/parties. 100 notes each per gig. Would ideally suit someone who fancies a bit of weekend gigging (once/twice a month) and regular once a week rehearsals. Enthusiasm and GSOH a must! Unfortunately the bands in my signature are getting too busy for me to commit to these guys, so am looking for my replacement. Feel free to PM me.
22. I'm off to the states for a week, beg June. Whilst I'm there I usually load up with some DR fat beams for my electric basses as they are half the price. Never bought upright strings in US before, being fairly new to gigging with DB. I thought it might be an opportunity to buy a set or two that are either exclusive to the US, or are cheaper over there. For reference I play pizz Jazz, with a bit of occasional "bounce" but no slap. At the moment I'm using the same strings that came on both uprights (EUB/Acoustic). Steels, fairly taught and low action is how I'd best describe them. Quite fancy some Innovation Honeys, but can't find them on any US web sites so far. Any recommendations from the experienced upright fraternity plz would be welcomed. cheers, John
