1. Chris sent me some LMII rack ears, what a star! Cheers Chris, top man and fellow GAS sufferer....except he has more expensive taste than me...or just more taste!
2.
I'd like to - but google maps makes it 143 miles & 3.5 hours from me - so I'm a frayed knot this time Have a great time all that attend - send us a postcard Cheers, John
I'll show you my 4x8 mini, John...worth the 300 mile round trip alone.... Postman Pat been yet BTW?
3. Please consider this sold Si, with the case, delivered. PM on it's way sir! John
4. If someone buys my Spector 5 for the price of this & delivery, then I'll have it, but alas no love for 3 band Legends for £250.
5. For those that can make it. I've gone ahead and booked a venue/date as it seemed the only way to get a bash "going". If I'm there by myself, I'll win all the raffles prizes..! 11th July 2-5 p.m In Shaftesbury. Map link below. Shaftesbury Christian Centre, Christies Lane, Shaftesbury SP7 8PH Venue is free (Big low ceiling hall), free parking, free tea & coffee in a nice coffee bar area, bogs, Tesco over the road, nice pubs in town and Gold Hill is worth a visit. http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?q=SP7+8PH&am...BIQpQY&sa=X Not exclusive to Dorset dwellers, just easier to call it a Dorset bash as there was some debate as to whether Shaftesbury could be called South West Will get a local luthier to come along for some "set up", general guitar care advice and a drummer for a "jam" (ACM graduate). Be nice to give both some dosh for their time, so maybe a small contribution from those that attend? I'll attempt to extract some goodies from music retailers for a raffle in aid of basschat. If anyone is coming that works in shops around and about the dorset/wilts/somerset/hants area please feel free to badger the owners for some freebies. If you could let me know who's able to come, then I can make a list and have an idea of numbers. Bring your gear (the weird and the wonderful) and your plectrums/fingers and we'll have some fun, should be a grin. John
6. Seen Mr King in the 80's, very impressive. But a little "cold" for me. Flea seems to convey more "heart/passion". In my (limited) experience, I've seen more kids wanting to play Flea's lines because they can then play them with their drummer/guitarist mates, because the RHCP's tunes tend to be simpler, thus encouraging kids to play in bands. I have introduced Mr King to students who go "wow", but once they've mastered a song/riff find it very hard to find keyboards/guitarists/drummers to play Level 42 tunes with. They may use a new found riff to impress friends, and post their "bedroom antics" on you tube. But from that point alone Flea wins. More kids playing in bands, and that's important for me. Just an observation folks....I don't personally listen to Level 42, or RHCP for pleasure.
7. This does look like a good deal.....
8. John Bought a neck & scratch plate from me, uber fast payment and great chap to deal with. Thanks John
9. Yes......"this weeks" ...................................damn GAS
10.
the case for me in the past has been a quick sand, and then a new bit of laquar over the sanded area. Although I'm no pro.
Thanks. Anything that has passed through Davetbass's hands is gonna be good IME. Toooo tempting.
11.
Any interest?
How easy is it to get the old decal off and the new one on? Looks like a nice bass. John
12.
Sorry - I have too many as it is, otherwise I would probably keep it.
No worries Paul, I'll see if it's still around after I've sold my Spector 5 string (.........although I doubt it) John
13. That is a nice looking bass. And if it has gone through Davetbass's hands it will be a cracker. Interested in trades at all?, I've gone all P bass recently and this would look nice against my white one!
14. Used to use them in the late 70's in a punk band. But after 30 years of wandering in the 5 string warwick/status/jazz desert I'm back to where it all started for me (after several recent attempts at finding one I liked) I'm always amazed at how for such a basic passive set up of 1 pick-up & volume, tone how they cut through with a band, probably where they sound best? Just ordered some GHS 3060's and can't wait. Let's face it the P bass looks soooo cool, slung low"ish" (not too low though....back can't take it at my age!), although I'd love a Les Paul bass for looks alone.
15.

If I look too long at the fretboard I get dizzy, it's like a 'shroom" trip maaaan...
16.
Tease To the OP get yourself around to Electric Ladyland and press your nose against the window (I doubt he'll be actually open) 85 West Street St. Philips, Bristol BS2 0BX 0117 983 2500
I remember years ago they had a pair of paisley Precisions in the window, 1 fretted and the other fretless, I so wanted to go in and try them, but I wasn't actually sure it was a shop, museum, someone's front room, or an "adult" shop....bizarre place, but intriguing.
17.
I'm OK with Ain't No Stoppin Us. See my point?!
Yeah, it's weird, I'm probably the only bugger who trips over it. I'd love to nail the very first 4 notes of "Somebody else's guy" as smoothly as the record, just can't get that fret-less type slide.......unles he's playing a fretless of course??
18. Totally! I dep in a mates soul/disco band, and although I know the notes, my fingers get completely "uncooperative" during the verse and chorus to "Ain't no stopping us now"......Every other number is fine (IMHO), but I have a complete blank with that riff. The more I try, the worse it gets Still get asked back, so maybe no one notices??! "Rhythm Stick" is a great bass line tho', Norm is a legend.
19. Don't often use a pick, but every now and again have a "bash". Really enjoy a bit of funk with a pick, sounds very retro. Mate of mine gave me some heavy/thick rubber ones, they are quite good fun, but not my thang. I do have a problem with dropping picks tho' so have shied away from "serious" use. So far my fingers haven't fallen off mid chop, so will stick with them for now, me'thinks. p.s. just got into P basses after several attempts, sooooo think I might complete the look by pickin' ??
20. +1 on all the above. Bought a P bass, super speedie delivery and all as described and more. Cheers
21. Love it when drummers only use small kits to make a big noise! I'm thinking of putting flats on my P bass.....is this the sound I can expect??
22. Thanks M. That's really helpful. Looking at my post, I sound a bit of a jazz "ludite". I do appreciate the more complex material and the sheer brilliance of the musicianship, I just can't listen to it for too long. Having said that I have a Yellow Jackets album/dvd which I do enjoy watching now and again. It's just I've felt a little lost and overwhelmed when the guys in the quartet talk about the music they listen to, so I'll check out that link. Basschat does the biz again. Cheers.
23. As a newbie to playing "jazz" (still struggling to define the genre) I have discovered some of the most beautifully crafted songs I have ever heard. I must admit to thinking that "Jazz" meant complicated tunes for show offs (just my opinion folks) and could listen to an album like "kind of blue" for 1 minute per track max. But having learned some songs recently for a band, I discovered "Autumn leaves, "Night & Day", "Georgia", "Ain't Misbehavin", "Lullaby of Birdland" from great songsmiths like George Shearing, Fats Waller, Cole Porter. No fret w*****g, just beautiful melodies over equally well thought out chord progressions which relate equally to the lyrics. I do understand why people like the type of "jazz" which involves stunning solo's and weird and wonderful (to me) chord changes/progressions, but just like any "genre", I've discovered a side of "jazz" that appeals to me. Hope this makes sense to someone?? I guess I like a good song s'pose and have too short an attention span to like anything too complicated for my small brain.
