1.
BTW congrats on the new bass oldslapper, look forward to seeing and hearing it
Haha! It's ermmmm "lived in" shall we say, but sounds huge! Hopefully if we can get the bash organised I'll definitely bring it with me.
2. Thanks for replies. I wouldn't describe what I do as "slap", so I'm probably going for some "spiro's", so I can arc occasionally. Fountain of advice/help and wisdom this forum is...mmmm!
3. That is THE prettiest bass I have ever seen!!! I want, but I mustn't buy another bass.....no no no... PM'd
4.
Now with new ammended poll. Finally got the damn thing working so that you can all vote again! Matt Multiple votes for everyone this time!
Well done Matt!! John
5. Got home yesterday with a recently aquired double bass. It's my first non-laminate acoustic. Soild top/side/back. Old and "well played". Monster volume and tone. I don't know the make, I'll have a look inside sometime. It's at a luthier having a set up today. The strings on it are quite old and I'm worried about how long they'll last. I'd like to put some replacements on whilst it's being looked at by the luthier fella. Any suggestions? The type of stuff I play on upright is trad jazz/gypsie/cowboy in a jazz quartet and then occasionally for a more mellow acoustic singer songwriter. So one has a bit of "bounce" and the other more straight forward pizz style. Might bow in the latter gig for one or two songs, once I've sorted my technique out!! I'm new (10 months) to upright playing, so although I've done some research, I'm still none the wiser other than I don't think I need "weedwackers"...whatever they are and there seems to be some folk who swear by "gut", others by steel. It also looks like DB strings last a little longer than EB strings, so worth investing in something decent? Appreciate any help please. John
6. Bought this new September last year, sold it as I wanted separate head and cab, bought LMKII, but preferred this, so bought it back! Great for my electric bass/covers band stuff (5 and 4 string). However, I've gigged it with my EUB couple of times and although it was nice and clear, after using a friends 1x12 cab with the upright the other night, I noticed the "spread" was better for double bass. Ideally would buy another amp...but moneys too tight...blah blah. So am offering this for trade for a 1x12 rig. Preferably of similar wattage, as it will need to cover both electric and upright bass in a variety of venues. The amp is still under warranty. I'm not in a desperate hurry to trade as it's a fine amp and I'm borrowing the 1x12 set up in the mean time. Here's some more details. Genz Benz Neox400 210 combo. 2x10 Neo drivers 425 watt into the 2x8ohm neo's Tube and FET channels, or the ability to mix them together. Switching and mix via foot-switch. It's 425 watts into 4 ohm, so get all 425watts from one box. Has very solid carrying handles at the sides, and casters on the back so can pull along. Dimensions:28 1/4” H x 21 1/4” W x 16 1/2” D " Weight 66lbs Obviously for a trade it will be a meet up to swap. I'm in north dorset and do a nice coffee if you fancy coming here. Or I'll drive to you (within say 2 hour drive for the right deal for both?)
7. Yamaha 20 watt practice amp. CD line in, active/passive switch, active 3 band EQ, headphone output. Great sound for such a small package. Used at home for teaching and also for rehearsal with EUB. Collection preferred, but could post at cost. I'm in North Dorset.
8. My NA350 made a huge fart, buzz and prolonged whistle.....then died. Only had it a couple of months bought used here, never gigged. Took it to a renowned local amp tech, who said that the internals were a "bit weird" and quoted something ridiculous to replace parts, but couldn't guarantee it would resolve the problem. Apparently the internals are all Chinese bits....I gave up the will to listen to any more (much like you probably are at this point of my reply) and binned it in a hissy fit. It was a shame as I loved the sound, very "Eden" warmth, but at a fraction of the price.....there's the rub me'thinks. The Eden forum had a couple of threads on these, with "noise problems". Great sounding amp...possibly went under the radar of QC at the factory?
9.
I'm similar, 34 years playing bass guitar and now doing double bass and all those effortless runs and fills suddenly become impossible I never thought I'd be satisfied playing root-fifth stuff to bluegrass type music but it's a real achievement at the moment. I think unless you're doing super-duper jazz it forces you to simplify what you do and I don't think that's a bad thing.
Great stuff! I've no problem keeping things simple....suits my brains' capacity! Noticed your location BTW. Trying to arrange a "bash" south west-ish, so if you can get over we can compare notes...(errr no pun intended there). John
10. I'm going to talk to the venue today and get some dates when it's free, then get hold of retailers/luthier/drummer to confirm they will be able to get there too. Sunday afternoons look best from other bash threads. Would it be just as well to go ahead and book a date, then just hope it suits? I know you can never get a date when everyone can make it anyway. Will keep you posted. "Mansons" in Exeter could be a good venue. BC'ers from further west who can't get to Dorset could organise one there??? ......probably have to put some plastic sheeting down to catch the GAS drool tho'
11. Jake....thanks, I've just read through this thread. You're a diamond for posting pics/advice. I'm new to gigging the DB/EUB and find it exhausting, but exhilarating. I thought, as a an e-bass player of some 30 years, that I'd be "match fit" to go out with an upright. But I was wrong. Jazz quartet plays mix of Gypsie/20's/30's type dance stuff, which is 2 to the bar I, V stuff, but I'm knackered after. Intonation, intervals, scales, etc not been a problem (to my cloth ears anyway), but I think my posture is a problem (6'4" height) along with "self taught" technique, so this has prompted me to go and invest in some lessons. Anyone know of any DB tutors near Dorset? How far away is Jake???
12. Bought M4L666 synth pedal. Arrived well packaged and uber schnell!! Thanks for a smooooth transaction, nice guy to deal with.
13. It's a nice bass, might be up for trading for a smallish combo
14. Bass player that made me want to play bass was Dee Murray. Listening to him on my older brothers early Elton John albums was the first time I actually noticed the bass parts. He was a beautiful player and great b vocals. IMHO I think he, Nigel Olsson and Davey Johnstone were a great rhythm section. They all had a huge influence on me. Listen to "funeral for a friend/love lies bleeding" on "goodbye yellow brick road", probably the last EJ album with any credibility, before he disappeared up his own ****. I'm afraid it's not very funky, or complicated, but it does exactly what it should do, and sits where it should. During the 80's I got into Jazz/rock/fusion.....anyone who played fast complicated parts ("first one to E wins" kind of thing) and disappeared up my own ****, but came back to simple melodic playing as my first love. I still have a tendency when in "auto" to play a fav Dee line, and I love doing b/v's. When I went to see "Slade in Flame" at the flicks with a mate. We hid in the cinema and watched it 3 times, that's what made me want to be in a band. Lately been influenced by good writers like Cole Porter, George Shearing and Fats Waller, can't help but want to play bass to a good tune...
15.
So I'm selling all my stuff to fuel my GAS: Behringer Rack Compressor Really good unit with adjustable, adaptable compression. It can go from subtle to punchy as hell with one twist of a knob. I've had it for about a month, but it unfortunately has to go. £50 Digitech Bad Monkey Meh guitar overdrive that works OK-ish for bass. Good for guitar though. £20 Ibanez SB-7 Nice synth pedal with filter option- this is the pedal I would keep if I could. Using this into the Bad Monkey I've created a passable Hysteria tone. £35 I have no credit card, either cheque or Paypal. PM me for interesting trades as well.
PM'd for the SB7
16.
What's the neck like? a Jazz or P neck?
Sorry, only just looked at this add again. It's a very skinny jazz neck. John
17. First post school paypacket in 1977, bought a mates first attempt at building a bass and his vox 60 watt head into a matching 1x18 cab....gigged it through the first year or two in various punk bands...traded the lot for a leather jacket. Currently play whatever I've bought that week...through whatever I traded the week before ..
18. This is a bargain...just don't have any money. Nice guitar and Paul will give you a stress free transaction.
19. Smoooooth transaction with the groove bass. Thanks Benedict, top man.
20.
If I recall correctly the string through models came out in about 1996
Thanks Andy. John
21. Anyone know if post 1990 US Fender Jazz models have always had string through bodies, or when did they start to have string through bodies as standard? Or did they do some with just bridge stringing. Thanks. John
22.
I kept quiet on the oriiginal suggestion until I discovered where 'South West' actually was. Coming back to the thread I now understand that it's Bridgewater, or perhaps Bristol, or maybe Shaftsbury or Salisbury. Have we been infiltrated by Guitarists?? Serious suggestion: why don't we have spring bash in the summerzet area to offer something to more southern members, and an autumn one in the Brizzle areal for those who are keen enough to come twice and to cater for more northern and Welsh bretheren. I don't know enough about it to take the lead on the Brizzle event but I'm certainly up for helping out... ....just don't tell Mrs A!!!
Really not worried where a get together is. I only suggested shaftesbury as I can get a free venue, with parking, coffee bar, rooms for "jamming" with a drummer, luthier set up master class, quiet room for chat/dvd, large hall for showing off yer gear, local retailers with stands and local amenities. The thread has been going for a long time, but haven't seen anyone actually able to offer anything in the way of a venue or taking responsibility for organising it. These events don't just "happen", and if no one else can come up with a working alternative, then all I'm saying is I'm prepared to organise a get together. It can be called the mid-east-southwest bass bash if it helps?? I might just go ahead chuck some dates out, and see if anyone can make it anyway, if not then at least I'll stand a good chance of winning the raffle!
23.
Shaftsbury ok for me depending on gig dates, btw Mr Pedant here isn't Shaftsbury West of Salisbury and East from Yeovil and the like???? Unless I have the wrong one.... Btw would we be able to get someone along who can do a hands on master class in set ups (action and inntonation) - that would make it worthwhile in itself for me.
Yes defo get a luthier up for a session. Sorry probably didn't type it k'recly. .....it should read that Shaftesbury is accessible from the east & west via A30 & A303 and north & south via A350. But, it looks like Shaftesbury is a bit far for a few folk from somerset, cornwall & devon, so looking for suggestions further west. It is a very large geographical area I guess so quite ambitious to cover south west. Maybe it should be a Dorset/Wilts/Hampshire bash if held in shaftesbury?? Just a suggestion.
24.
It's a big trek from Devon but I'd give it a try. Interestingly only round the corner from my preferred luthier in Henstridge!
oooh!! who's that then? If he's nearby, could invite him to do a "set up" masterclass if the bash is nearby, and drum up some more business for him/her??
