I can see merit in that idea but I would also advocate for the piano. Lots of the greats were credible pianists. Charles Mingus did a solo piano LP. Jaco composed on piano. So does Pat Metheny, believe it or not. Jack DeJohnette, Chris Potter, they're all piano players. Playing a horn can show you something but reading charts that are a whole step out is not so hard on a bass; its just a mental trick to convince your hads they are two or three frets from where they are (depending on whether the horn chart is in Bb or Eb. Fundamentally, however, that one strikes me as a pretty useless party trick!! Your main need re: horns is as a composer/arranger. All you need to do is study the orchestration pedagogy: it tells you what the ranges of instruments are and how to write out the charts etc. Can't see that you actually need to be able to PLAY everything!! I use Samuel Adler's Orchestration and Bill Russo's books. My argument is that the double bass will get you work when he electric won't. Spending time on that will pay for itself. Still, what do I know. Janek is a monster who could polay me into the ground (although, ironically, his horn writing is, if I may venture an opinion, a bit clumpy) I still say stick with the upright.
+ 1 piano, and sticking with the upright......horn schmorn .........only joking of course. My son is a sax player, but their seems to be a lot of them around. However, not so many DB players, especially good "readers". Again, what do I know, other than I'm a recent convert to upright and playing Jazz, and it has reignited my passion for playing. Sounds like you'll be an excellent student of whatever you choose though...best wishes.
This IS an Ashdown Mini 15. I know the company who made these for Ashdown. They also make Cabs/Amps for Trace, Orange, Cornford, HiWatt and Sound City. They were a production over run when Ashdown changed the design of the side handles from rectangular to oval. As this company has an agreement that they will not market a range of their own cabs they had the red piping put on and sold them off without badges. I had an ABM115 from them loaded with a Neo speaker. Great Cabs as they are made of Brch Oly so really solid.
Bump with more info on this great little cab with big capacity to love loooong time.
Decided that its not for you then?
Still not sure if I really want to sell!!! They are soooo good, but recent purchase of an LMII means I need to sell something. To be honest the 4x8 is sufficient for my needs as the amp goes through PA in the loudest of the bands I play in, so the 1x15 isn't used and I'm too old to be asked to do stadiums!!. Might get a Mark Bass 2x10 cab though, in which case the 4x8 might have to go... Got any suggestions for a "one cab does all" that's not stupid money, can't afford some of the thingsI see on here and...despite what Tresume says, I'm really not worth it!

4x8 & 1x15 mini cabs for sale. Exactly the same weight and dimensions as Ashdown Mini 115. (The Squire Jazz bass (for sale too) is to give you some idea of size, if you can't access a tape measure). Apparently made by the same company that makes Ashdowns cabs. Nice looker, black vinyl(?) cover with red piping. 4x8 is 8ohm 600 watts weighs bout 30kg. The drivers are celestions, from looking through the rear ports. I was led to believe they may have been emminence. 1x15 is 8 ohm and rated at 300 watts, it weighs 20kg. Dimensions are 47x47x34cm, nice square shape!!. Nice condition and well looked after. 1x15 gigged once since I got it off a BC'er. Sounded nice with an LMII and EUB, 4x8 not been out of my house. I'm in North Dorset and don't really want to post, but you are welcome to arrange a courier at your cost. Otherwise I'm happy to drive and meet, or deliver, no more than 25 miles from where I am.

Bought my P bass, good guy to deal with...came to a gig and sat through our first set, so either has great taste, or has very effective ear plugs!
Also bear in mind that it's highly unlikely that either of your cabs would play any louder when powered with 500W rather than 300W. Why? Because although the thermally limited power handling may be more than 300W the excursion (i.e. volume displacement) limited power handling is likely to be significantly lower. With multi-driver cabs changing the wiring (and still maintaining equal power per driver) can only ever quadruple or quarter the impedance (depending on how they're originally wired), it can never double or halve the nominal impedance. Alex P.S. It's impedance, not ohmage!
Ok thanks Alex. So my 300 watt 15 mini cab, which is considerably lighter, wouldn't be a problem with 300 watts from the amp? If so, that gives me a bit more of a choice. John

Help: Bad blister on the end of my finger and gig tonight
oldslapper replied to Beedster's topic in General Discussion
Good shout dude, but my thumb is what's muting the E in this track!
Before you go to boots, or B&Q, try resting the wrist end of your thumb on the E string to mute it........, definately geting my coat now. Hope gig goes well, personally I loves a good disco track to play, reminds me of me yoot...."get down, boogie oogie oogie, get down, boogie oogie oogie..." get the white flares out, nope don't fit no more. -

Might need an adjustment in technique but if it's disco octaves, try playing lower string with thumb and free up i & m fingers........unless you are already doing that, in which case I'll get my coat... -
Congrats! brilliant stuff! If you come down south west I'll come and have a yodel, PR one of my fav singers. john
esp. if the cabs are really for monitoring I'd very much doubt with your rig you'd have any problem not hearing them
Thanks for the advice guys. I probably don't need the full gas from the head, never have done to date and I'm never likely to play wembley , so I'll stick with what I've got from what you say. I guess I could always get a 4 Ohm cab in future if The Who need me....in which case make that several 4 ohm cabs and heads. Thanks again, John

I have recently bought a mark bass LMII, 300 watts at 8 ohm and 500 @ 4ohm. I have 2x8 ohm "ashdown" mini cabs (4x8 @ 600 watt and 1x15 @ 300 watts). I like both cabs, but had thought about just using the 4x8, which has a surprising spread. It occured to me tho' that I'll never get the full whack out of the head using a single 8 ohm cab. All 3 outfits I play in take a signal out from the backline and the cabs are for monitoring really and, to date, I've never had to have any of my amps (min 400 watts in the past) over half way output volume, and never needed to use 2 cabs of any description. So, I could live with just one...but wondered if it was possible to convert drivers to 4 Ohm, so "just in case" I need to suck a bit more juice out of the amp. The 4x8 is 600 watt rated...? Any advice?

what tune/band that got you into bass ?
oldslapper replied to phil.i.stein's topic in General Discussion
Dee Murray, on "funeral for a friend", my eldest brother had just bought the last decent album Elton John ever made, 1973 I was 13. Immediately joined a band in school and insisted on playing bass so I could play this tune (played guitar up till then). Wonder how many Dee Murray appreciators are out there. Wonderful player, underated. -
Are you talking Bristol, maybe?
Bristol is driveable (1 hour), we're a bit further south in Dorset, but travel for a good show wherever.
