Steely Dan, aja, where's the good bit?
oldslapper replied to spectoremg's topic in General Discussion
Perspective is fascinating to me (but that’s just my perspective). Stewart Lee (to me) isn’t as clever as (he gives the impression) he thinks he is. I don’t care much for the cynical at the best of times, and his brand of cynical snarling observations just isn’t funny to me. So I guess I don’t have a sense of humour (if we applied the “if I don’t like it it’s sheet” algorithm). Steely Dan? I like some of their music, (most of their music actually). Lyrically funny at times, obscure at times, dull at other times. Musically, I like their fusion of influences. They tend to write a good singable hook over some pretty complex changes (not easy btw). My perspective is that they haven’t set out to be “clever”, but by default they are. But it’s just an opinion, just a perspective. Neither is “right/wrong” . Will I watch Stewart Lee if he happens to be on tv when I’m watching it? Yes of course, I’m not going to shut the door just because I don’t enjoy his approach, but many do, and so I’ll respect that and hope to find a nugget despite my “preference filter” being permanently switched on. Do I think SD are perfect....no. Does anyone care? I sincerely hope not. First world problems btw P basses are all you need..............,,😘 -
This: Just looks nice. Might sound like a cow of course, but who cares? I would look fabulous, and that’s why I am in a band. “It’s all in the fingers”!? Its all in the hairdo mate 😎

There have been a couple of references to tickling gonads with LPs. I think you’re doing it wrong. -

You don’t like it. That’s ok. There’s loads of “classic” stuff I don’t get, no matter how hard I try. I’m not sure there’s anything to “explain” that will help either. -
I got interviewed in my pants once. The nice detective let me go eventually. I wonder how much say “made it”’ artists have these days regarding interviews. Isn’t that all directed by whoever you are owned by?

Having 2 older brothers (by 9 & 10 years) my musical education that caught my attention, was Bach and Manhattan Transfer from the oldest and The Who, Hendrix and very early Elton John from the other. Melody, harmony, production, songwriting, excitement, balls and great bass playing was my staple diet growing up as a young kid. When I started buying my own records Hot Love Rock n Roll pt 1&2 Slade in Flame sound track. were the first 3 vinyl purchases.

I agree about the neck width Matt. I think that’s why I liked it. Wide and flat. Status Groove 5’ers have similar profile. Like them too.

Did someone mention rollers? -
I’ve never owned expensive equipment, for no other reason than I have never been able to afford it. Most I’ve spent on a bass is £600 (used Stingray), same for back line. If I had the money, I would love to buy some expensive kit and see what it’s like to own. Good luck to you if you can afford it, enjoy it! 😊 Having said that no one has ever commented on my gear, only my playing. So maybe they feel sorry for me 😂

Had unsolicited contact from a band asking if I’d be interested in joining them. They sent me a website link, and all looked promising:- Image (interesting) Harmonies (nice) Songs (good story telling) Gigs (not too often but a good level when they do) But.....the guitar has chorus on, every song, all the time. I hated chorus in the 80’s, still do! It’s silly, but insurmountable for me. So it’s a NO from Slappie. What has prevented you from saying yes to a gig, which may seem a daft reason to others?

He’s invited you to attend rehearsals with Caaaarl, even though you’ve turned the job down? Do you think Dave likes bass players “watching”? Eeeeww 🙀 -

On a more serious note. You seemed to have liked the set and it’s local, so as others have said, you could give it a go but put down some boundaries regards Caaaaarl. At least Dave admitted they didn’t do well last time. Best wishes -
