  1. Rinse & repeat. Brilliant. That's on my list of new song titles...thanks.
  2. Honestly? Before coming on here I was blissfully unaware of the variety of basses available & was quite happy with my cheap squier jazz bass & old cheap bass stack. No one in any band ever commented on said bass/amp, only on my playing. "that's great, or that's not great"...end of. I then entered the black hole of bass forums which reached into my very insecure being, and I began to say to myself. "other bass players will look upon your lowly bass/amp, point and laugh!" Oh how I imagined being mocked by the multitude of low enders. So, I started a ridiculous 10 year journey of buying and selling equipment in order to feel better about myself, so that in my imagination, I could look another bassist in the eye and without hesitation spout forth the list of high end gear that I owned (but couldn't really afford). However, no one in any of the bands I played commented on said bass/amp, only on my playing. Hold in I thought, this has made no difference to anything other than my insecure ego & bank balance. I now own one cheap bass, and don't even own an amp. Still get asked to play/gig/record with some great players. So why the GAS? For me coz I forget what matters, & have to admit I can suffer from chronic comparing syndrome. I'm probably the only one, but I'm glad that's off my chest. My name's oldslapper & I'm a plonker.😁
  3. That bass VI has a d on the back of the body & the neck. Does that mean they don't work?
  4. Gigs & website/social media, if you're prepared to take orders Ed. Gigs definitely. I've only used CD baby for download sales.
  5. In 40 years of playing bass, a BBE Opto Stomp compressor pedal is the only pedal I have ever used. I bought it & used it for a month at 3 gig's. I had no idea how to use it, and couldn't discern any difference in my sound other than when I turned the controls up and got a "squashed" sound. A support band bassist borrowed my rig including the Opto Stomp, and commented how great it was & offered to buy it off me....which he did. I never heard their sound check, but listen to their set. The bass sounded unremarkable (FOH festival rumble). What's my point? No idea... Other than (understatement alert)... perhaps knowing how & why a piece of equipment works, is the way to get the best out of it. I'm pretty sure sound engineers put compression on my signal....I've never asked & don't intend to, I don't care.
  6. Blimey you lot! You never see these in the for sale section, which obviously means they are brilliant, beautiful & owners would never sell......😉
  7. Lovely flat necks on these, possibly my favourite profile next to a 62 P. These have gone up in value considerably.
  8. My first bass was an unlined fretless, so they just feel right. Funnily enough, other than some Bruce Cockburn albums that have obvious fretless sliding playing on them, I'm not a fan of the "mwwahh" sound. I like fretless playing that you wouldn't know was fretless by just listening (Boz & Kenny Passarelli). Maybe Jaco's status as a bass "god" influences people to try fretless. Personaly I don't have any music with Jaco playing on, but maybe I should.
  9. Horses for courses & all that... I started on 1 unlined fretless 4 string in the late 70's, went on to own 5 & 6 string basses & a 10 string stick. 40 years later, I own 1 4 string unlined fretless. I tend to respond differently to 5 & 6 string basses than 4's too. I always end up noodling a lot more, playing chords and tapping when I've owned ERBs. Have whatever you're most at home with.
  10. Not heard of this brand, but familiar headstock & body shape. Very Ibanez Blazer-esque? https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.co.uk%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F292450625132
  11. Oh yes, where the horn is placed....that can be a problem. 😱
  12. I've owned 3 Spectors (only Legends & a NS models, do budget ranges). I have loved the varied tone pallet, the build quality, very comfy body shape, feel of the neck in my hand & the 5 string had the nicest B balance I can remember having. But....I just can't get on with the top horn placement not being over the 12th fret. I tried 3 times, until I gave up. Such a shame, great basses.
  13. A bit of sport on TV whilst playing has been a welcome distraction at some gigs. Can't say I've ever had any food onstage, might lead to strings getting covered in foodstuff. Bit like BRX, a drink (lager in my case) on stage doesn't get the attention it deserves & ends up warm and flat. But I do have bottles of water to hydrate, but as a drink, water is less "needy". So....food & drink on stage..probably not. TV? Absolutely! But I do insist on subtitles if it's a detective show, as it's so hard to hear above the racket coming from the stage.
  14. Oh dear! I'm in Bath.... I've owned 2 of Alan's basses, only sold them due to financial pressures. Fab instruments, stable as a horses' house due to the construction material. Someone buy this.....please. 😛
  15. Whenever I buy a car, I test drive it by first revving it as hard & long as I can, hoping that people notice me. Once I have their attention I attempt a doughnut manoeuvre I saw on YouTube (I stall quite a lot, but I think I look cool). It never occurs to me to check if the breaks, clutch, gears, lights work, or if the cars structure is sound...or, heaven forbid, it fits any practical needs. OK, so my cars never leave my garage (but no one in the showroom knows that, they all think I'm the Stig maaaaan)
  16. (All the plectrum users sniggering into their Dunlop 1.14mm pick tins) 🤣
  17. I have a guitar or two out on stands. On a couple of occasions I've managed to trade a couple of lessons with trades people (builder, gardener & chimney sweep) when they've come to do work. If they've spotted the guitars, I'll noodle on if they've showed interest, which has started a conversation like "ooh a guitar, always wanted to play...." "ooh I teach guitar, would you like a lession"...."ooh yes, but its quite expensive..." "yes so is your ridiculous hourly rate..hows about a trade?". A few "oohs" later, & no money has changed hands, but everybody's got what they want.....ooh!
