Congrats, I'm sure if you've got the cash for one then they're worth it but sadly out of most peoples price range. All the vids I've seen of them have amazing tone. You might want to update your 'interests' line under your name now though

I too like a bit of tech metal and that was excellent. Good job putting a beatdown into and not making it sound terrible! Nice 'American Psycho' reference too.

The Porter Cottage or the Porter Brook? Both are within a stones throw of each other and are pretty nice. I live very near there, as does andydye on here. Yours is probably a very familiar story back in the days when record contracts were the sole aim of bands everywhere!

Do you mean classical style music? There's a surprising dearth of classical brass pieces, the valved cornet and trumpet weren't really taken seriously as solo classical instruments until relatively late on. There's a fair amount of baroque pieces using non valve trumpet, but as it relies solely on hitting harmonics and these are spaced fairly far apart in the lower registers (lowest on a regular trumpet is C to G or a 5th) making melodies difficult to write, they're all what is today thought of as played in the instruments very high registers where the harmonics are spaced much closer together. Swedish trumpeter Hakan Hardenberger, frustrated with a limited repertoire of classical trumpet has commissioned a number of newer pieces from modern composers you could track down if you want to explore further. How about agreeing with him to get someone not in the band (soundguy, manager if you have one) to go out and check the levels front of house and make any tweaks on both his and your behalf? If they adjust your levels first (or pretend to), go back out and then adjust his then you might be able to do it stealthily.

I'll knock something up this week and put a dropbox link up. It will be entirely VST amps for convenience reasons but it should give you an idea of the tone. Edit: - I did this very quickly.The amp is a free VST called Kuassa amplification, some EQ on the 3 different settings (clean, crunch, lead) but effect free apart from that. The volume and tone controls on the guitar are backed off a little, the guitar is very cheap and I haven't changed the strings in an incredibly long time but hopefully you can get a flavour of how the pickup sounds. Apologies if I've butchered a track you like but it was very much 1 take only. Link removed as not working.

I have an MIM strat which is now my favourite guitar out of however many I've owned over the years. I played it in the shop and it was love at first strum. Try all the ones you can and get a good one!

OK, I decided to stop procrastinating and just try a neck shim on the grounds that it costs nothing and takes about 15 minutes. I don't know how legit it is but I used 2 pieces of card, on the full width of the neck and one half width to make the bass side slightly higher to try and compensate for the curve. It seems to have worked out quite well, the action on the bass side is certainly lower and apart from a little buzzing in places, it plays significantly better. There are a couple of small jobs that need doing before I re-string and set the intonation but it's looking like it's a viable backup guitar if not a favourite in it's current state. I may post it in the guitar porn thread if it turns out alright.

The closer I look, the more it seems like the first few frets aren't level. It looks like there's a slight twist in the neck and there's definitely a more pronounced curve on the bass side of the neck. Straightening it seems like it's beyond my abilities so I need to decide now whether to get a new neck, live with the problem or sell it on as a work in progress. I just wish I'd noticed before I'd dropped £17 on a new scratchplate and £40 on a replacement pickup! I still need a 2nd opinion though so all might not be lost.
