1. I don't really get the whole guitar solo thing but I love this one. Melodic and a really great way of winding the song down without being showy. Starts near the end but you should listen to it all anyway as it fits into the song as a whole. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uX39uHKAZHo
2. I used to be able to do everything but the solo, it's a good challenge and a great way of working on your picking technique. Decent song too. I'm not a punk fan but I've got a lot of respect for Freeman and watched a whole Rancid set at Reading many years ago to see him play.
3.
I borrowed my brother's ancient and battered RAT II to play Song 2 by Blur as requested at a wedding gig. I was told it should do the job. Oh my life. This pedal's so crazy it actually scares me a little. The distortion is ridiculously thick and nasty. So much fun. Try one out if you can That's all really, I was just compelled to post about it after experiencing it! Okay, I suppose a good topic would be: does anyone else own any guitar pedals then coincidentally sound awesome with bass?
Looks like an old one, any idea what year it is? The quality has been slowly declining over the years but I love the old ones, possibly my favourite dirt pedal ever for guitar along with the Harmonic Percolator. Very different beasts though. I got a cheap one off E-bay and swapped out the chip for the classic one. And put in a superbright green LED but I don't think that effects the sound I lent mine to Finbar to try out on bass but he never ended up with one so I'm not sure he got on with it. I believe it's what the guy from Glassjaw used on the 1st album which is why he wanted to try it.
4.
Not heard a thing, but a quick google made me stumble across this
That's the one. There's that one, guitar and bass specific models and one with Blutooth for some as yet unknown reason. Looks pretty interesting. If it's full of decent effects I might get one to complement my M5.
5.
GAK in Brighton has all of those on the shelf. So has Guitar Guitar in Epsom. Also the best sucking I've ever experienced has been in the USA. Maybe get out a bit more?...
Been to one music shop in Las Vegas and asked to try out a Digitech compressor to be told "We don't demo pedals. If you want to know what it sounds like, it's compressor." Yeah cheers. I left shortly after.
6. Slightly off topic but has anyone seen the Zoom Multistomp series which made it's debut at NAMM? Looks like an M5 style version of the B3 but more compact.
7.
Here you go, some badly played bass through the 2 different pitch shifter 'pedals' http://soundcloud.co...ette/pitchshift from 0:18 - 2:00 is the monopitch pedal, this is the monophonic shift. from 2:005 onwards is the PitchShift The whole patch mix is 50% and then the effects ate blended 75% in.
Good demo, very impressed with the tracking on the monopitch as well. It made me want to make 70's cop show music for some reason.
8.
I love JPJ's bass line on Ramble On.
+1. Really interesting and memorable line over what's bascially 2 chords. A soundcheck favourite.
9. It's fine, I wanted harsh and the other 2 models on there weren't cutting it (literally).
10. "Enter your email to win" I doubt it's going to be that simple. I'm sure there's some element of chance involved.
11. Not sure it was as intended but I found it was a very good way of getting a really hard square wave tremolo which the M series lacks. Good trick.
12.
I can't begin to imagine how much shipping would cost for that.
If you can afford it in the first place, you probably don't care
13. Very interesting, I'll give it a try. This is why I need to sit down and have a proper play instead of just using it as a modulation/tappable delay pedal. Thanks for the tip.
14. Very interesting vid, thanks for posting.
15.
Best: Electro Music in Doncaster Worst: Wizard Guitars, Sheffield - I have nothing good to say at all about these guys.
I agree, Electro has always been really good for customer service, even if their stock has dwindled quite a lot. As for Wizard, the markup in there is ridiculous and always put me off trying anything out. I've been in twice for last minute strings and picks, and it's 15 minutes walk from my house. Try Real Time music on Broadfield Rd, Sheffield if you can. Only been in once knowing exactly what I wanted but they have a good selection and the staff were helpful.
16.
Get down to a big big guitarshop that you can play everything there. Obviously I'd say Andertons but there are loads of others like GuitarGuitar that maybe nearer. And just play as many guitars as you can lay hands on and something will choose you. Also at risk of offending the entire forum id take the opinions of bassists with a pinch of salt. There is such a cultural gulf between guitarists and bassists and bassists have a lot of stigmas about things that they can't really claim to understand from a guitarists perspective. Not saying that's the case of any advice given here but I'd give more weight to what guitarist buddies might tell you. (please no one flame grill me I love you all really!)
I play more guitar than bass since my bass band split up Good advice though. Work out a budget and write down your ideal specs putting everything else out of your mind. Then try and find it, trying out as many different guitars as you can.
17. I think I like the look and prestige of PRS more than the sound, which has never really impressed me that much. Plus, the standard wraparound bridge is just daft if you think about the lack of adjustability. Humbuckers are a little compressed sounding to me, I'm moving towards single coils and P90's these days. I'd have thought a USA Fender will hold it's value more than a cutom made guitar. There's a bunch of Telebration guitars celebrating the designs birthday, I'd have thought they'd be good players and a decent investment. http://www.musicradar.com/news/guitars/fenders-2011-telebration-anniversary-telecasters-359163/1 Personally, I'm moving gear around to fund a Gordon Smith. Specced to taste, a GS2.0 with 2 P90's and a tunamatic bridge will set you back £700. That's if you can stomach the 12-14 week wait time.
18. I did! I played guitar and just wanted a bass so went out and bought one (Vintage 5 string, still got it). Never really had a bass idol and the only bass tab book I ever bought and gave some serious attention to was 'Blood Sugar Sex Magik' although I don't really class Flea as a massive influence. Metallica are the reason I got into music in a big way, although they have been terrible for some years now.
19. Hmm... A distortion pedal with clean blend and a filter to target the upper and lower frequency ranges of the effected signal. Although this may be a stupid idea.
20. +1 on playing root notes to start off with. After a few plays I generally have an idea what I want to do rythmically and melodically and can work it out with a better idea of whether or not it will work with the rest of the song. I guess whatever you hear in your head when you write parts is a subconcious product of your musical influences so I tend not to go in thinking "What would <insert favourite players name> do here?". Likewise, I try and write a part that will work with no effects at all in case of massive equipment failure.
21. All the settings are on the M5. My favourites are octo, cave and hall (if you're feeling boring) but they're all useful.
