Thanks, I'll tidy up the wire with some precision scissors and give the pots a clean as I've got some switch cleaner handy. In all honesty, I just searched ebay for guitar wire and bought the stuff that was most common at the best price. It wasn't an aesthetic or a misguided 'mojo' thing, I just didn't really consider anything else. What would you recommend for future use? As for the cap, Nick on here was selling them around the time I was considering the rewire, it was the right value so I bought a couple. And to be fair, you've seen it!

The original active circuitry in this bass was pretty dire so I replaced the pickups with a Kent Armstrong P and J (bridge). These need adjusting as they're waaay too low (pics when I get that sorted). I also ripped out the electronics and intended to re-wire it but the large pots I bought were too big and ages ago I got round to buying 3 * 250k mini pots and a Russion PIO .47uf capacitor off Nick on here, and today I actually sat down and sorted it out. I went with a Jazz wiring layout using 22 awg cloth covered wire bought off e-bay and this is what it ended up looking like. I shielded the cavity with aluminium tape years ago with gaffa over the holes to avoid shorting. Not the neatest job ever (cloth covered wire is annoying to strip back without a decent precision blade) and trying to solder 4 separate wires and one leg of the massive capacitor to the case of the tone knob was a mission, but I plugged it in and it worked. Annoyingly the volume pots crackle when turned for some reason but it sounds really good when you've settled on a sound. Once the pickup height issue is sorted and a new set of strings bunged on and it should sound a lot better.

Some friends of mine run a website that was originally very stoner/doom oriented at http://www.ninehertz.co.uk/ Might be worth trawling through the reviews on there if you want to find something new. A few recommendations would be Beehoover, Witchsorrow and a +1 for Stubb. Anyone mentioned Sleep yet?
I like the bass he was using for their early live stuff, looked like a Jazz with a P p-up added between the Js
Is that the homemade looking one with no logo on the headstock? I agree about his playing, it never jumps out at you as being flashy but you listen closely there's a lot of good stuff going on. From the looks of it he grew up in the middle of nowhere and presumably practiced a lot out of lack of anything else to do.

Anyone watch this on BBC4 last night? 'Ten' was the first album I ever bought with my own money and while I haven't bought an album since 'Yield', this was still an interesting look back at their career. It was also fun to spot some of Jeffs nice basses, including a very nice fretless Wal and a nice looking old P he cracks out when jamming to Ramones records.

I love my Carbon Copy but I wish it had tap tempo. I'm not a fan of EHX stuff so if I had to replace the MXR I'd have a look at the TC Electronic stuff or an Akai Headrush.

There's a DHA VT1 V3 on sale on here for £50 but a Jackhammer for £21 is also a bargain. Let us know how it is on bass.

Just ordered a BYOC kit for their Ampeg Scrambler clone (fuzz and octave up) for something to build for my week off. Should kill an afternoon nicely I'll post some clips when it's up and running as I couldn't find any good ones on youtube for bass.

I think any cheap well known brand compressor will do you if you're just looking for something simple so I'd go for whichever one you can get for the least money. If after you've lived with it for a while you find it lacking or wish it had a certain feature then you can trawl through ovnilabs or ask on here for pointers. Personally if I had to buy another to replace my BYOC I'd look at the Carl Martin Opto-Stomp or a 2nd hand Boss CS-2.

I'd love to try a Ric but they seem like a hard bass to live with with their quirks. They do have a unique sound that I like but they seem like a rich mans instrument.

The VT1 is very subtle. I use it with solid state amps to add a bit of grind and add tube warmth but it doesn't go much past that, even when cranked. It's a great and useful sound but not what I, and I imagine a lot of people, expect from a drive pedal. I realise I could probably get a more versatile pedal but I like the VT1 sound and they're made in the UK rather than mass produced and I'd rather support a small business.

Had enough of my multi effects - recommend me some singles ?
For flanger imo you can`t beat the Boss (the purple one) flanger. The other bassist in my band uses one, and it sounds great.
+1 for the BF2. Get a black knob Chinese made one if you can. Slight volume increase when you kick it on but they sound great and are very flexible. I went the other way and got a Line 6 M5 and sold all my modulation pedals but I still kind of miss that one. As for delay, do you need tap tempo or any other specific features? -
Sweet, my DI-EQ sits proudly on my computer desk for recording and the VT1 gets use when recording bass direct into my computer to give everything a bit of valve 'Grrrr'.
Got the first one back from our last gig. Apparently there are shots with more action in them to come. We're all in the one pic though which is good. Pic © Paul Slattery
If there's a P90 in that Gordon Smith, it's the exact 6 string I've been GASing over this week. -
Band advice wanted - Songwriting credit issues
GarethFlatlands replied to Ruiner's topic in General Discussion
Is that the same as PPL? Because that reminds me I need to finish off my application form. We're scaling back playing live as we don't have a full time drummer in one band and the bassist in the other is a new(ish) dad so our live gigs are few and far between. -
has anyone got a really traditional fendery looking Shuker?
Finbar on here has a very nice black P with a maple neck.

Band advice wanted - Songwriting credit issues
GarethFlatlands replied to Ruiner's topic in General Discussion
Every band I've been in has worked splitting everything equally between all the band members. New band = all new songs anyway for me so it's never been an issue. Also, dividing the money we make equally* made sense as we all chip in for equipment, van hire and general band outgoings. *That said, £0 between 4 band members is usually pretty easy maths. -
Agreed, you read through the manual about all the vintage effects that were modelled but not all of them are actually useful in practice. If you can borrow an M5, that will give you a good starting point as to whether an M9 is worth it for you.

Am I being slow, but why are they called Sgt Peppers boards?
Great to see some love and respect for Todd Rundgren here.
His career's gone off the rails since Rocky IV.
Ok, I know it doesn't actually have any bass guitar on it, but it's a great example of a pop song that manages to be slightly subversive and use non-standard time signatures
Sounds like there's some double bass on there, unless that's what the low notes on a harpsichord sound like. Great song regardless. As for great pop songs:- Beyonce - Single Ladies Kate Bush - Running Up That Hill

GarethFlatlands replied to guybrush threepwood's topic in Basses For Sale
Guitarwise... well, love Strats, but interested in anything with single coils really. As for amps, anything light and small... or particularly an Ashdown Little Bastard.
I've only got a Jazzmaster which is staying with me and nothing spare bass amp wise. Good luck with the sale anyway, looks like a very nice bass for a good price.
