1. That's a great looking bass. This thread has given me massive GAS for a single cut ACG fretless.
  2. I went for tuner, compressor, overdrive, bass exciter and DI but your needs may differ from mine. I tried to keep it simple but every time a nice pedal comes up for sale on here I have to stop myself buying it.
  3. I'd think a low gain distortion unit like the SFX Red Dragon or DHA VT-1 for an extra usable sound that's not too different and maybe a decent DI if you're planning on playing live and don't want to use the Behringers most places seem to have.
  4.
Interesting. But in my head it will always be a staircase accident!
Interestingly, Wikipedia say's it's a Mellotron but I remember a Guitar World interview where I heard the Strat story. I even remember going and borrowing my sisters copy of "Remasters" to hear it after reading about it but this was many years ago. Maybe it was Bonzo kicking a Mellotron down the stairs and it landing on a Strat?
  5.
Ooh I love that 'dropped down the stairs' moment as well! I always imagine it's Bonzo kicking his kit downstairs. Or more likely Bonzo kicking an innocent bystander downstairs! But sadly, I think that is the only good track on that album.
It's a Fender strat with the whammy bar being abused so much you can hear the springs straining coming through the amp. Personally, the Cave In song Sing My Loves has an awesome moment at 4:02 when it all comes together beatifully after a long build. First heard it on this video through headphones wondering if they were still worth listening to after the average Perfect Pitch Black album. I was sold after hearing it. 6. If it's your dream guitar, go for it. You'll play more on an instrument you like because you'll enjoy it and your bass playing background will give you a head start. Learn a bit of chord thoery (if you don't already know it) and see what you can come up with.
  7. They did a range of vintage specials (possibly not called that) a few years back which had no chambering but were daft prices as they were somehow seen as special editions. Probably best looking 2nd hand, I picked mine up for £500 (used to belong to one of the guys from Mansun) and I love it. It's a cliche but they are great to play and sound really nice too.
  8. Er, he forgot the piano... http://www.noiseaddicts.com/2008/11/beatles-hard-days-night-mystery-chord-solved/

    Fuzz!
I can vouch for these. Picked one up a month ago after a recommendation on here. I'd been searching for ages for the right fuzz and so far I'm loving it. I think they're based on the 'tall font green russian' muff. Either way, it sounds awesome.
Cool, like I say I love the percolator pedal on guitar. I'll keep an eye out for a muff on ebay.
Used lots of her pedals. They dont take kindly to active electronics.
Yeah, they don't like jazz chord voicings either so not much use for my active bass or poncy guitar playing. It's on sale here but I'm debating keeping it for recording.
  10.
To add even more insult to injury, a band I used to be in was doing some recording and the guitarist had a Fender Jazz master guitar, the Elvis Costello signature model. Lovely sounding guitar, stunning even. But he couldn't record with it because of a constant buzz probably due to shielding. Bear in mind it was as new but bought second hand as was over £1k. I would have been livid if that was my guitar. You spend all that money on something you can't record with because it hasn't been built properly.
That's a common fault with Jazzmasters due to the big, flat single coils. They should all be shielded but I don't think the pickups are wax potted. This is what bugs me about Fender, they re-issued the Jazzmaster years ago, stuck a price tag on of over a grand and fixed absolutely none of the problems the original had. The QC was also apparently awful. It's taken them until a couple of years ago to sit down and re-evaluate what the potential of the guitar was and 2 guys from Sonic Youth still did a better job.
  11. Something to aim for I guess! I hate how Marcus makes it look so easy.
  12.
One of my faves featuring the amazing Mark Egan from 1985.
I was worried that was going to be awful and 80's. It was 80's but in a really good way, thanks. And yeah.... Percy Jones.... Maybe in 5-10 years or so.
  13. Still got mine, a Vintage V950B 5 stringer. Ripped out the crap active electronics and put a Kent Armstrong P and J pickup in there. The pickups need raising and it needs re-wiring, both of which I've been meaning to do for years to make it usable again. The neck isn't great and it weighs a ton which is probably why I haven't bothered. It'll never be my main bass again and I'll get no money selling it either so it just sits there.
  14. Bought and Aphex Bass Xciter off Dandini. He was very easy to deal with and posted the pedal quickly and sturdily wrapped. I'd deal with him again no question.
  15.
Unlined fretless only mate, otherwise it's cheating apparently.
It's a defretted Yamaha so I can't avoid lines!
  16.
Yes, amazing album and a great dvd too.
Love the album, will have a look at the DVD.
  17.
Roni Size - Brown paper bag Evenflow - Pearl jam + I Think ...You oughta know - Alanis Morisette was on a fretless...? Anyway, 3 nice'n'easy ones to start. Have fun...I miss my fretless....
Some good choices there. And Alanis Morisette.... Paul Young seems popular, and I forgot about Paul Simons 'Graceland' album. Good start!
  18. I've recently picked up a fretless bass and am loving the sound. Anyone got any fretless lines they enjoy playing that I can use to get a handle on the instrument? So far I've been playing:- Pink Floyd - Hey You Bush/Gabriel - Don't Give Up Gary Numan/Alan Patridge - Music for Chameleons But am looking for others.
  19.
The metal band I'm in play in drop B but as I'm awkward I play in B standard and just shuffle everything that isn't on the bottom string up two frets - has made for some tricky fingering occasionally when open strings have been involved but it's never caused a major problem
My old band played in drop B, we reset after one of the guitarists left and changed the low string so we're in C# standard because I wanted to sound like A Perfect Circle. We don't, at all.
  20.
Just spoke to Jon and should be here Wednesday/Thursday, bit of snow up there! (and down here)
About 5cm in Sheffield so Jon probably got more out in the Peak District. Hope your new bass arrives soon!
  21.
It's the five-day course. I had the first two one-on-one, then the guitar tech from Bring Me the Horizon joined in (Deano!) - it's all very laidback, and you get a lot of time with John.
Dean Robowtham? He's set up a workshop in the same building as our band practice space and I'm curious as to what he's up to in there. Various guitar/amp repair stuff I thought but maybe he's building stuff too.
  22. From the TV ad I saw recently it looks like a good show. As the real Floyd aren't going to be touring any time soon I'd say £100 for a nice evening out for 2 including a meal isn't too bad.
  23. I agree with the above except I like some of the modulation sounds. The compressors are OK but my bassist said the BYOC I got for £56 was miles better than anything on the Line 6 gear. I had a good core set of pedals (distortion, delay, reverb) and got an M5 to go in the middle and provide modulation or crazier sounds but I really don't use a huge amount of the settings as it's more tonal colouring than a pedalboard replacement for me.
  24. Traded with the very affable Sean Fitzpatrick for a Yamaha fretless.
  25.
The 'best' compressor is the one that does what you want it to do.
For example, I made a BYOC optical compressor. 2 controls, set unity gain, dial in amount of compression, job done! Not what you're after in terms of parameter control but they do a 5 knob version of the Ross compressor which looks good. The new MXR also has a lot of control and metering. Ovnilabs gave it a very good review here:- http://www.ovnilab.com/reviews/mxrbass.shtml
