1. Heard this beast last night, it sounds immense! Really big sound and a kind of low growl that reminded me a bit of the bass sound on 'Dopethrone'.
2. Gigged Tuesday, first of the year and 2nd overall with the 'new' band. We did 2 new songs which were a bit unrehearsed and I made a massive error on another but covered it and I think it went down well. We've changed styles massively since our other guitarist left so we were all a bit nervous about palying the new material in front of our friends but they seemed to like the new direction. Bonus.
3. Not sure about the last 2 and I'd pick different songs by a couple of the artists you've listed but certainly not a terrible set.
4. I bought this last summer when I fancied myself as an EUB player but have barely used it since then. Cosmetically it's not too bad with a few chips and scuffs and electronically it works fine. The main problem I've got is the intonation isn't great from string to string so I've been struggling to be inspired to practice. The nut probably needs work as string height seems different across strings. As I don't know any decent DB luthiers, it's just kind of sat in the corner of my room mocking me for not playing it so I'm selling it on the condition you might not be able to play it straight out the case. I'm also pretty small and the stretches are destroying my hands. I might just back into EUB at some point if I can find a more suitable instrument. It comes with a soft padded case and I'm after £200 which is £50 less than I paid when it had 3 strings (the low E is a spiro bought off Benbastin on here). Collection only from Sheffield, I know I said that with another bass I sold before I caved and posted it but there is noooo way I can post or even trust this to a courier. I drive so can meet part way or deliver not too far away for petrol costs.
5. I've decided to run my DHA VT1 at the recommended 12v instead of trying to get away with 9v. The PSU I have at the moment is kind of noisy and someone was kind enough to post a link to a supply on E-bay which they said worked well for about £6, but I can't find the old thread it was in. Can anyone give me a hand as to which supplies they've tried and had good results with please? Links appreciated
6.
You have not said what model, wattage or speaker is in there. If it has the crappy Blue Marvel speaker or the slightly better Sheffied speaker then look for a Black Widow replacement as it will work just fine without having to check the matching of cab and speaker. I have done this for a TNT combo and it does make a difference as you could really drive it with Black Widow but the Blue Marvel was flapping really bad, even at below gig volumes in the end.
I'm not sure tbh, will have a look tonight. It might even be a TKO.....
7. Looking at Status strings, I'm confused by the 'scale' option. I'd have thought medium would be fine for 34" basses but the Warwick website says that's long scale? Which do I need? And do I need high tension for flats or would standard 40 be OK?
8.
I need to get into this. Got a macbook, interface, usb keyboard and cubase. Anyone reccomend any free stuff i can play around with?
Try Synth 1, pretty straightforward software synth that should give you a good base to start learning the basics of synth programming but flexible too. Modelled on the Nord lead I think. Claw is the only other one I can think of at the moment, apart from Crystal which is very complex and probably not great for beginners.
9. So it's all you damn people with your VT1's on order holding up my DI!
10. The VT-1 is a different beast from the sounds of it, adds a nice tube warmth until around the halfway mark where it starts breaking up. Nice grind at the upper end of the gain knob without ever getting really distorted. The input and level controls let you get a nice balance between on/off and the bright switch is really useful at adding a bit more top end, not too much though. I'm sorted for overdrive but the Xotic does sound good from what you've said.
11.
That's the guy who writes long jingles for LEGO isn't it?
It's the guy who did 2 things everyone should learn after hearing a Bon Iver album and picking up an acoustic guitar:- 1. Realise that it's pretty easy to make that kind of music; and 2. That you in particular shouldn't bother.
12. I currently go through an old Peavey TNT combo our guitarist picked up for cheap and it works insofar as I can hear myself at practises. The sound isn't all that great though, would it be worth spending £50-60 to replace the current old 15" speaker with a Celestion BL15? I don't know how badly the stock speakers are regarded and if swapping them out would improve the sound at all. Also, would it be worth trying out a neo speaker? The combo currently weighs an absolute ton. I'm conscious they're pretty expensive atm and don't want to spend a lot as it's not my amp at the end of the day.
13. And The Vines. NME used to have some stupid story about them in every week too until their 2nd album came out and they had to admit that they weren't actually very good. As for Del Ray, nice looking girl and the music I heard on a TV advert was fairly inoffensive. I probably wouldn't turn it off if it came on the radio (assuming she's on Classic or Jazz FM which is mostly what I listen to) but I wasn't impressed really. I find Ed Sheeran much more annoying.

Fuzz!
Theres two fuzzes i still want to try... 1) sovtek muff. 2) human gear animato Not game for dropping 500 quid though...
A company called Fredric effects does a Russian Muff clone for £85. I use one of their harmonic percolators on guitar and love it so might be worth a punt.
I've got the Ruiner and the Spectacular Aenima - they're pretty wild. The Ruiner is too much on its own bit sounds flipping ace blended with clean. The Aenima's a bit too thin for much on bass but is the best lead guitar solo pedal I've ever heard, proper biting
Thanks, decided massive fuzz doesn't suit my playing style so the VFM is on sale on here.
15. Glassjaw - great sound on the 1st album, "When One Eight Becomes Two Zeroes" starts of with some dirty P action. Deftones and The Stranglers also have consistently great P-bass tone.
16. Awesome, looking forward to hearing it this Friday assuming you're gigging it?
17. Anyone? Off to ebay this week if no-one's interested.
18. I had an XL for just over a year and really liked it but the small keys and need for programming to get the most out of it put me off. Some great bass presets already in there though, incluing one our PA struggled with. If I hadn't needed the money I'd have kept it. Ended up with a Triton LE which has a lot of usable presets including a couple of good pianos and a load of drum sounds which the XL lacks.
19. I've played a couple of gigs sat on chairs due to flu. Worst one was when my stomach problems flared up and I just sat on the floor hitting pedals with my hand as it was too painful to stand up, plus I thought I was going to mess myself. Only 3 occasions I can remember thankfully!
20. I bought this for g****r but I use a lot of weird chord voicings and fuzz just doesn't work with them. This did sound awesome with single notes and power chords but I don't use those things enough. It's bascially a fuzz built to sound like old school recordings meaning you don't need a cranked tube amp to get the best out of it as with some vintage units. "“This doesn’t sound like a vintage fuzz!” you might be saying to yourself. Well that is why it’s called the Vintage Fuzz MASTER. Back in the day when I was looking for a really wild fuzz sound I heard in the most insane of Jimi Hendrix performances, or psychadelic noise freak outs of the 60′s and 70′s, it seemed that all the pedals people were recommending just weren’t cutting it. That’s because a lot of those old fuzz sounds were created by combining fuzz faces or tone benders with high gain marshall stacks recorded at insane volumes. The Vintage Fuzz Master is my solution to the conundrum of wanting to have that sound in a tiny package. All the madness of vintage fuzz into a high gain amp with out the hassle of carrying around a stack with you. It was good enough for Trent Reznor. It’ll be fine what you need out of a fuzz." - Devi Ever FX I'm a bit gutted about having to sell it as it's a great sounding unit but not for the way I play and they were really friendly and helpful when I emailed them. Bought direct from Devi Ever and with a stupid customs charge on top it came to around £82. It's been used for literally 30-40 minutes at practice until I accepted it wasn't working out so I'm looking for £75 posted.

Fuzz!

Found this interview:- http://www.myspace.com/chris_ford/blog/290802854 About halfway down and following on from the previous question about the sound on 'Lost Keys' "What's the distortion that's always on? The TurboRAT. When I play live, one cab has some distortion, and the other one's very clean. The SansAmp is one of my overdriven distortions, the other is the Colorsound Tonebender Fuzz. I have to have that on now when we do the song live, and I have to be standing in exactly the right spot to get that effect."

Fuzz!
Also I think tone bender is only used on Jambi...........nut not 100% sure on that
I think I read it was used for the wailing feedback on 'Lost Keys' but I'd have to check. Anyone tried Devi Ever stuff on bass? I bought a Vintage Fuzz Master for guitar but it doesn't suit my delicate jazz chords.
23. Ordered mine off ebay on 29 December, just chewing through the desk now waiting for it to arrive! Pedalboard will be:- Boss TU2 BYOC compressor DHA VT1 DHA DI-EQ Should all look reassuringly homemade (apart from the Boss) and sound great.
