1. I've decided that I need a compressor and was looking at the BYOC stuff as I've wanted to build a pedal for ages and I've got a few days off work next week in which to do so. There seems like 3 different types, 5 knob, classic (both based on the Ross compressor) and optical. Does anyone have any thoughts as to which one would suit bass best or first hand experience with any of them?
2. From what I understand of the Freeze, it smooths out whatever you played into a continuous tone although I may be wrong. I'm too lazy to check the demo video. You can also get the sound Graham Coxon makes at the end of each verse riff on Blurs 'On Your Own' with the DD3. 1st 3 controls on full, the last one on the shortest delay setting.
3. Don't quote me on this but I beleive the POD XT allows you to download extra amp sims, including bass ones to the standard red guitar model. Edit - apologies, someone already mentioned the X3 above which I didn't grasp was the upgraded version. Might be worth checking as you might be able to track down an XT for cheaper?
4. The ancient Boss DD3 has a hold function that does between 12.5ms and 800ms. Works in a fairly similar way to the pedal in the vid, set it to the hold function, set your delay time and it will record/loop the last thing you played for as long as the pedal is held down.
5. I play guitar mainly but would prefer basschat if it stuck to bass. It seems a lot more laid back and less childish (apart from the odd inflammatory thread) than most guitar forums. If anyone's got a guitar specific question, it's usually flagged up in the thread title and people always help out.
6.
Jack 15 (2515 driver, no tweets) in Sheffield, just outside the centre. Only just picked it up (I haven't the time or tools to do it myself!) and giving it a running in, but by the weekend it will be in our rehearsal room and people are welcome to have a crack if they want.
How much did it set you back Tom?
7.
Afraid not, I bought one of these for six quid but now use it for my VT2.
Sorry to go a little OT but I assume this power supply doesn't have any hum issues with with either the VT1 or 2 as you're still using it? I got a VT1 and the supply that came with it was a cheap one that was really noisy and am looking for a better replacement.
8. That's cool, my audio interface is a bit shaky with plugging stuff straight in so I'm hoping it will sort that as well as giving me a nice tone I can transfer between rigs.
9. It's really difficult to get a handle on at first, I can only hope it gets easier. But it looks cool if that helps.
10. Argh, broadband provider now switched and I will endeavour to check out all the suggestions. Thanks again peeps.
11. I've got the VT1 but not had chance to have a good play around with it. Seems like it needs a bit of tweaking and a good power supply to work noise free but I was very impressed when I tried it through my computer through an amp sim. So impressed, I pulled the trigger on a DI>EQ today to complete my simple pedalboard.
12. Seems like there's quite a few books by him, any recommends? If they're simple 2 chord ones like the earlier exercises in 'The Evolving Bassist' I mkight just bit the bullet and do them myself in Reaper.
13. I'm learning some basic walking lines to basic chord progressions and wanted to know if there were any good, and free, backing tracks anyone knows of. It's all fine on your own but it would be better knowing I'm intonating properly and the lines work with the chords before I get into any bad habits. Thanks
14. Boss DD-6 has a mode where you hold the pedal and it repeats until you release it. Our guitarist uses one on this video:- http://vimeo.com/8052822 Or the EHX Freeze sustains the last note you play for as long as you hold the button down.
15.
on their own, the SB-1 sounds are a tad cheesy. blend them with fuzz, or feed them into other pedals and the results can be massive.
I'm sure they reward tweaking, but £650 would get you a decent 2nd hand synth. Plus you can learn to play basic keys which is always useful.
16. I got one but I use it for guitar. That said, I'm considering combining my bass and guitar boards and only carrying 1 case around. Pantherairsoft messaged me about it recently and I think he's tried one out on bass so he might be worth asking. An exp pedal is cool, I use it to morph between 2 presets and making cool noises to distract from my poor playing. Here were my thoughts on getting it as per the old thread amended to deal with the rubber feet issue. "If you've seen the M9 or M13 you'll be familiar with the setup and layout of the controls here, although the 2 footswitches are different in function. The left switch turns the effect on and off, although unlike the M9/13, the display still shows the selected effect and settings instead of simply showing that it's bypassed. Makes sense, the lights above the switches don't change colour to show you which category of effect you're in so there's no need to turn the effect on to see whether you're about to kick on a beatiful reverb for that nice quiet section or a maxed out fuzz. A nice touch which shows Line 6 have put some thought into this instead of simply taking a saw to their surplus stock of M9's. The right switch provides the incredibly useful 'tap' function for time based effects and activates the tuner when held down. Both switches together brings up the presets menu. There are 24 slots, all of which come pre-loaded with a selection of effects and all of which are overwritable. The left and right switches then turn into up and down selectors and another click of both activates the highlighted effect which is both named and numbered. No matter which preset you're in, if you play around and find a sound you like and want to save, simply hold down the model select switch and you're given the option of which number slot you want to save it to, as well as the ability to rename it to something more useful. No point having a tube screamer saved under a slot called '63 Spring'. Re-naming is a bit of a pain as there's a lot of characters which aren't really useful and one knob to scroll through them all so be prepared for a lot of twiddling until you're set up with the selection of effects in the order you need them. I also couldn't find a way of moving, say effect slot 18 to slot 6 without selecting slot 18 then re-saving it in slot 6 and having to rename that slot, so think about grouping your most used effects together from the word go. As for the sounds themselves, the 4 switch Line 6 pedals (and Verbzilla) have been around for long enough for most people to have a good idea about what this pedal can provide. I was expecting to pretty much ignore the distortions and filters as I already have a nice distortion (a modded Rat) and am not a fan of filters but was able to find some useful settings in both in the form of octave fuzzes, some surprisingly useful compressors, wahs and pitch glide. It has to be said, there was quite a lot of garbage in both those categories and some effects in the others where I wondered what the difference would be between that effect and the one next to it in a real world situation, but it's nice to have the choice available. As for gripes, the knobs don't seem hugely sturdy, though they're protected by a bar which should stop them being accidentally trodden on by all but the clumsiest of musician. Odd, as the rest of the unit seems very well built and like it would last a long time if treated well. The pedal also sits on 4 rubber feet which can be removed and the screws replace to give it less floor clearance for velcroing. Other brief points of mention:- Stereo in/out 1 expression pedal input No looper (something I could care less about) True bypass option Takes standard 9v barrel connection, centre negative, like all your other pedals so no need for an extra power connector, although it does come with one" Edit:- I got Pantherairsofts name wrong and spelt it 'Panterhairsoft'.
17. As cool as that looks and sounds, I doubt I'd find a use for it. How much was it out of interest?
18. The Police, or as they're now known, Sting, with their gibberish classic.
19. I can't find any recent bass playing ones but this is me with my sister. I got the looks and the muiscal talent
20.
Got a pic?!
Sadly not but it's identical to the black maple neck JJ Burnel model and has blue LEDs in the fretboard. Really nice looking and playing bass and it sounds huge.
21. Lovely pedal and a bargain at that price. I don't get why anyone would buy Boss or similar when you can get pedals like this for similar price if not cheaper.
22. Spent the first part of the year writing and recording. Got 8 songs ready, 6 of those recorded and played 1 gig in August. Our bassist found out his wife was pregnant and that's pretty much been it so far! The other band has taken a back seat while the album is finished so done very few gigs this past 18 months.
