I have my booking code for Wednesday's advanced ticket sale (coincidentally, it's also my birthday that day, so happy birthday to me!) and am hoping for four tickets -
I really like the look of this amp - where would I get one?
I got mine at www.bassgear.co.uk. Great guys and great service.
One question though ... how did you record it? I'm guessing that's a Zoom Q3 or similar so you're working within the confines of the on-board (very good) microphone. Some lovely tones there.
Yep, Zoom Q3HD. Some "wobble" to the sound from somewhere, but overall it's a great little unit.
Am I right in thinking this has a mid scoop like the Bass Terror (just using an example) and that the mids won't 'boost'....so to speak, as mids flat is mids dialed up to full on the dial?
I think this quote from Bass Player's review of the powered 19" rackmount VTBP is useful: Unlike the three other tube preamps in my studio, the 201S-800D didn't automatically give me the fat tone I associate with tubes. In fact, setting the 201S-800D’s 3-band EQ and presence knobs at noon gave me a sound that was decidedly bright, highlighting edge and clarity in every instrument I put through it, including a ’61 P-Bass with flats. I liked it well enough for rock, but didn’t think it was warm enough for blues, R&B, or gospel. I was wrong. My first mistake had been to assume what “flat” meant. I started over once I understood that the settings weren’t flat unless I set bass and treble at noon, dimed the mids, turned the presence freq knob to 0, and put the bass freq at 120Hz. It quickly became obvious just how much control I had over my tone. Adjusting treble and presence while choosing a frequency gave me precise control of the top end; I dialed in lows (tight, never flabby) with the help of bass and the 60Hz/120Hz bass freq button. The unit’s mid-cut-only approach was more flexible than I expected, especially combined with the presence controls. The 201S-800D emphasizes clean, faithful reproduction: If you love the sound of your instruments, you’ll love this preamp. Even set flat, other tube preamps automatically added a layer of warmth and girth to every bass I plugged in, but the Demeter was sterile—merciless, even—until I dialed in what I wanted. A while ago, I read somewhere that the best way to build your tone on a Demeter pre is to start with all the tone controls fully ccw and increase them bit by bit until you get the sound you like. I've always followed this advice and it seems to work well: there are definitely more compelling tones in the amp than just having everything at noon.

Bassbone into the PA, but the longer term plan is for a low power micro head.
I've got some figures for these at home as I've owned most types and made a point of weighing them all - I'll let you know the details when I get home
Thanks!
Here are a couple of posts that may help: http://badassbasspla...php?f=2&t=15882 - "I've contacted Hipshot. It looks like HB2 are ~22g lighter (each) than Schaller BMFL" http://www.talkbass....-weight-155613/ - Schaller BMFL weighs 110g (second post down) Which puts the HB2 at 88g or thereabouts.
Thanks! Yes, it's turning out to be an interesting question for something that should be so simple. I weighed two tuners of my P bass: they were each 102g. Two sources have told me that the Hipshot HB2 weighs 86g A saving of 64g across the headstock is probably not worth the expense!

Thanks for the reply. If you ever fancy taking one off and weighing it for me, that would be a real help!
Thanks for your advice - much appreciated
My pleasure. There are plenty of GE JAN 5751s on eBay that are bullet proof and sound great, and not very expensive for NOS compared to Mullard, Telefunken etc...
-
If I were you, first thing I'd do is buy a modern 5751 and a 12AT7 and just try them. If you like what they do then you can try different brands, and maybe even venture into new old stock. Diffrent brands can have different characters too, so well worth reading up on such things.

What are you hoping to achieve by using a lower gain valve?

I've been through lots of different gig bags, and they all bring something different to the table, but I have recently settled on the Mono Vertigo as I really like the weight and protection it offers. I love the low profile of the bag: storage isn't an issue as I have a Mono messenger bag for all my leads etc, or a Mono Tick to attach if I just need the bass and a basic set of accessories. I've never found it to be uncomfortable on the back, but then I have the straps set as long as they go and use the chest strap too. I like the Contego a lot as well, but that's considerably heavier. Protection Racket is good too, but quite big. Best gig bag I have ever had was an Access Stage Five, but that was heavy and almost a hard case protection-wise.

Anyone know the weight of the Hipshot HB2 (tuner only, not the bushing or screws)?
Gotoh Resolite GB640? It's the 'other' Fender footprint shape though.
Thanks, yes, I had spotted those, but the other style as you say so not what I am after. I wonder how much the HB2 is lighter than a regular Fender tuner, if at all?
-
If I want to keep the same footprint (i.e. not go to Ultralites), is there anything on the market lighter than the Hipshot HB2?
-
I sold an amp to Tom. He paid up front and kept the communication going throughout until we managed to complete the deal. I'd have no hesitation in dealing with him again.

I'm using the Mono Producer bag, as I have been impressed by the build quality of their gig bags, and then found one of these for sale pretty cheap so thought I'd give it a go. Really nicely put together, as is all Mono stuff. I have the following loaded in mine:

3 instrument leads
3 patch leads
1 tuner
2 speaker cables
2 mains leads
1 socket tester
1 circuit breaker
1 shure mic with stand adaptor
1 Bassbone pedal with PSU
1 Radial Bigshot i/o pedal
1 Zoom HD recorder with stand and PSU
my usual tool kit (2 screw drivers, 2 allen keys, string cutters, 1 capo, 1 string action gauge)
ear plugs
lever arch file with music
2 pens
business cards
car keys and mobile
I have another Gator bag that houses stuff I use less frequently as well, such as guitar stands, extension leads etc.
