If you like it how it is, leave it alone. If you do decide to sell then it's up to the new owner to decide what to do.
Quite right on all counts. That said.... I think that's the latest date I've seen with that gorgeous splodgy tort, spiral saddles and 'those' tuners.... but not the highest serial number - but serial numbers had the wildest range of any feature around that time. Really great price, Walbassist - I really can't see this hanging around too long, not even in this financial climate. Superb example of a gorgeous bass. Shame you have to let it go, but have a good luck bump on me.
Thanks for this! -
This was quite heavily relic'd, and after seeing pictures, I was a bit shocked to find it looking very artificial. It looked like a chisel had been used on it, then left. Not sure if its my thing at all.
Is it this one on the website? If it is I have to say the aged process doesn't look anything as well done as my new VT5.

Intonation on flatwound strings
franzbassist replied to franzbassist's topic in Repairs and Technical
Hi guys Just re-read my original post and I wasn't clear... it's only the fretted note at the 12th fret that's a touch sharp when setting the intonation. I tweaked the truss rod when I changed the strings last night: I've checked it again just now and it's fine (same as when the bass had rounds on) Cheers Gareth -
Intonation on flatwound strings
franzbassist replied to franzbassist's topic in Repairs and Technical
I don't have any problem with flats & I've tried several, favourites being GHS Precision Flats, which I believe are Sandbergs, so not a common problem IMO. Not wishing to offend - are you bending the string over/behind the fret when checking the tuning? Is the action a bit high? Just thinking maybe they don't 'bend' as easy as rounds, streching/changing length more & giving a bad reading when intonating, dunno just thinking out loud really
Hi John Thanks for that. Just spent a little time playing around and it seems better this morning. Just about nailed it on all strings now. Cheers Gareth -
So I have just fitted a set of Lakland flats on my Sandberg VT5. They sound and feel great, the tension is perfect, but I can't seem to get the intonation right. I can tune the bass and nail the harmonic no problem, but fretted notes always seem sharp. Is this common with flats? I don't remember it being an issue with La Bellas or D'Addarios in the past. Do they just need to stretch in? Cheers Gareth

Got a Chance to Order a Custom Made Sandberg-Should I?
franzbassist replied to Rothers's topic in General Discussion
Yes, go for it. I took delivery of this last week and it is just fantastic. -
I sold Alex a P bass wiring loom. Faultless communication and speedy payment. Highly recommended

Another smooth transaction has recently gone down between Dave and yours truly. Once again, a pleasure to do business with.

Comparative tension of flatwound strings
franzbassist replied to franzbassist's topic in Bass Guitars
Interesting. I feel the Status were lower tension that the equivalent La Bella set. My Lakland strings arrived yesterday and are going on the bass tonight, so will report back later. -
Tung Sol or JJ are perfectly decent modern valves. If you want to have less gain try a 12AT7(ECC81), which puts out about 40% gain that the standard 12AX7(ECC83). You can go vintage, but that will push the price up quite a bit....

Which Fender Custom Shop Bass if Money Wasn't a Factor?
franzbassist replied to molan's topic in Bass Guitars
Easy for me. My YOB bass, a dots and binding 1966 sunburst Jazz with lollypop tuners. -

I don’t really want to sell this bass, as I absolutely love it, but unfortunately needs must What we have here is a Fender Precision from late 1970/early 1971. The neck is dated “5 DEC 70 B” in green ink, which means it is from the first year of fretless Fender production. There’s plenty of life in the truss rod, the neck has a small shim and the notes choke slightly around the 17[sup]th[/sup] “fret” on a couple of strings. There is some slight pitting to the rosewood fingerboard, but nothing serious as it had only worn one set of flats since the mid-1980s when I bought it a couple of years ago! Neck plate serial number “305813” dates the bass to 1971 according to most of the Fender dater websites. The body is three tone sunburst with “T.Chambers” and a number “x8” in a circle stamped in the neck pocket. Router hump and paint stick mark are present. The body is well worn with plenty of surface checking, scratches, wear patches etc. Pickups are grey bottom, stamped “1021”, which I believe dates them to 1971 as well. The original pots were long gone, but the bass came with what appeared to be the original wiring and capacitor. Initially I put a P Retro in the bass, but have since returned it to “stock” after I bought a complete P bass wiring loom that had 1968 pots and the same wiring (green, white and black) and capacitor. This was fitted by our very own OBBM (thanks Dave!) I have also sourced a vintage neck pickup cover (with the squarer, rather than rounded edges) and an aged modern Fender bridge cover (including foam strip!). I also replaced the non-original pickup adjustment screws with aged modern Fender ones. NB: This image shows the bass fitted with an earlier rounded pickup cover and the P Retro. Both of these items have been replaced as per above paragraph and are not included. I believe all other parts to be original. Sorry about the blurry picture! NB: Note that the neck has been re-shimmed since this picture was taken, so the height adjustment screws are no longer set so low. I am sure the Fender specialists will comment on the two features make this bass unusual for a 1970/71: the lollypop tuners and the threaded saddles on the bridge. Both of these features should, I believe, have been phased out by1968/9, but the more I read the more I am reassured that this wasn’t always the case. The bass weighs 8.75lb (a shade under 4kgs), balances well, and plays beautifully. Firm £2k collected from Central London or NE Hampshire and includes Protection Racket gig bag. Happy to post at your cost. Cheers Gareth

Who has found their strings of choice?
franzbassist replied to sarah thomas's topic in EUB and Double Bass
I didn't like the Spirocores that came on my BSX at all, way too high tension for me, but thanks to the advice on BC I hit a home run with the first alternative I tried in Innovation Silver Slaps. They even made me two low Bs to try -
Comparative tension of flatwound strings
franzbassist replied to franzbassist's topic in Bass Guitars
I tried some Status 45-105s. Great tension but the E and A strings were completely dead, all thud and no tone at all, whereas the D and G sounded lovely. I've ordered some Laklands to see how they go. -
First rehearsal tonight and I must say it sounded terrific. I tried lots of different settings through the evening, to really put it through its paces, and it was great. Run passive with the neck pickup solo and it did authentic P bass, dial in a bit of J for extra bite, and then kick in the actives for real top end slice and bass punch. The neck's really nice too - flat fingerboard and a nice flattened D shape profile. I don't like the Sandberg strings much, but I'll be putting Lakland flats on soon anyway.... The band all thought it was an incredible aged finish, which it is, and were really impressed with the tone.

Thanks for the comments guys.
Is this a standard feature on this bass or a custom option?
Custom, adds a bit to the price but not a lot in context of a new bass
How close to a P bass is it? In passive w/ the tone control?
Early days yet. I'm taking it to rehearsal tonight so will be able to report back later.

Some people hate relicing, but I wanted a fretted P 5 string that wouldn't look out of place next to my 1970 fretless P. 9.5lbs on German P bass love.
To recap... they feel like the 760FLs - maybe slightly more substantial, but no more tense - but they definitely have more going on in the mids. No zing - just clarity. They're just lovely to play. Very responsive, and they growl lovely when you want 'em to...
That sounds perfect! Thanks very much for coming back so quickly!
