1. I would love to see the Bass V reissued as well. I know it's a weird looker, but I have always had a soft spot for it.
2. La Bella 760FS on my 1970 fretless. Rotosound RS66LD on my 1988/9 MIJ fretted, but only because I use that bass in a Jam tribute band and those are the strings Foxton uses! Otherwise it'd be La Bella Hard Rockin' Steels 45-105.
3. Brook Guitars, just outside Exeter, are very good.
4. Mark took an Ashdown head off my hands. Thoroughly top bloke and wouldn't hesistate to deal with him again.
5. Hej Inti, and welcome. My uncle is from Hoor in Skane, and I have spent many happy summers and winters in that part of the world. Cheers Gareth
6. There are differences, but I'm not sure how great they are. The common link to all the amps is the "dual tube" (ECC83 and ECC82) preamp, which I believe is essentially the same for the 427 Small Block, Drophead 200, Spyder 330/550, LB30 and LB550 (I assume) models. The differences come in the eq and power stages.
7.
I might have to see if I can go bug Ashdown in person soon, to try all these out!
Count me in on that trip!
8. New TE500 575 watt 2x10 combo MiBass 220 1x12 combo (also available as a 2x8 and 1x10) MiBass 550 1x15 combo And my personal favourite, the Mi12 300 watt 8 ohm extension cab.
9. My Spyder 550 has two NOS Mullards in it, an ECC83 and an ECC82. It doesn't do grit, but it sounds really good...
10.
Great vid/review thanks Gareth & I have to agree with all you say about the shift switches & tone controls. The bright switch doesn't seem to have much effect unless you have treble maxed & you might not get the change from a 15" speaker alone. I find it more noticeable (just) through my 1x12 + 4x8 stack. I think the LB sounds perfect with a P-bass & even better with a P-bass on flats Cheerz, John PS Could you stick this vid in the review section? It might be easier to find for future ref.
Hi John My fretted P wears rounds becuase I use it for a Weller tribute band, so loads of Foxtonesque picking going on - it sounds the nuts! For my other band, all my other basses wear flats and they sound fabulous through the amp. Good idea about the review section, so I've added the video to the thread already there to save duplication.
11. Here's the official video from Ashdown... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l3fFvTSqNsw And my quick bodge job in the garage... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x8QibZQbxSc
12. I shot this yesterday for another thread, but thought it could be useful in here.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yjuLMqgk4Qk
13.
It'll sound very similar to the Ashdown 550 spyder. Check the Ashdown youtube video demo. Gareth/Walbassist did one too. Same preamp but class D power amp.
And I shot this one for the LB30 yesterday... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yjuLMqgk4Qk
14. A rationalisation of my gear means I am selling the "big" Ashdown stuff. JJ500 Amplifier SOLD UK-made with plain black face, which I believe makes it one of the orginal run of about twenty I think. A few scratches on the front by the volume knob, but they look worse in the pictures than they are. Great amp, very clean and true to the tone of the bass. The eq is powerful and the Harmonic Emphasis is great for a subtle top end zing. £400 collected, add a used Thon 2u case for £30. UPS next day basic service (head in original box, no case) add £15. Neo 210h Cab SOLD All the detail is here. Excellent overall condition, with Roqsolid cover, a couple of nicks but nothing major [s]£350[/s] £325 collected. Neo 115h Cab SOLD All the detail is here (although note my cab is the shorter version, same width and depth but height the same as the 210h). Pretty much mint, with Roqsolid cover, so [s]£300[/s] £275 collected. Cheers Gareth
15. Hi there Having owned an LB212, if you are really keen on the Ashdown VS range I would suggest a better bet might be two VS112s. This would be a more flexible setup, and definitley easier to move. Oh, and the LB212 weight specified on the Ashdown site is wrong, the cab is actually around 50lbs! Cheers Gareth
16.
Protection Racket have a good rep and seem good value, but I must point out I've not used their bass gig bag. Yet.
I have one. A good quality, well made bag. My only beef with it is that it's so deep you could almost fit two basses in it!
17.
That and the TE 500 head have a dull silver faceplate like the old Trace Twin/Quadra/Hexa-Valve Heads had - very nice
And there's the answer!
18. The MiBass combos sound a great idea, especially since most folk seem to like the heads. From the description, the TE500 just sounds like the latest incarnation of what has variously been called the MK500 (red face), AD600 (gold) and the JJ500 (black) in the past. I wonder what colour this one'll be?
19. This theme pops up a lot! I've had both the Mono and the Protec. Indeed I still have the Contego, as although it's heavier it does offer better protection. If you get a Protec, get it from Thomann, as it is a lot cheaper than the £110ish you quote! Cheers Gareth
20. Go for it, life's too short! I picked up an Aria SWB two years back, the one the Stagg is modelled on, but very quickly moved on to a BSX Allegro as it confirmed everything I had hoped for in the upright! I absolutely love it and use it for about half the songs in my current band now. It sounds and looks the biz, and is always a real talking point with the audience. I was scared of the scale length change initially, but when the BSX arrived, with no dots at all on the neck, I knew I just had to go for it! String choice was critical for me. I really didn't get on with metal strings, but Innovation Silver Slaps gave me the feel/tension and tone I wanted. All the best Gareth
21. That would probably make a very nice fretless in its own right. I wonder what a new unlined ebony board would cost?
22.
Anyone want to dispute or add to this list:
Surely there must be some anonymous factory in "String City" China, churning out roudwounds at an incredible rate for some of the budget basses being churned out across SE Asia?!
