1970 P bass fingerboard radius?
franzbassist replied to franzbassist's topic in Repairs and Technical
The radius template worked a treat, and it looks like it is 7.25" after all. Thanks for all the help people. Just need to deal with the ski jump choking the notes between the 17th and 19th frets now: sanding block anyone? -
How do you measure string height ?

Get one of these string action gauges from Stewart Macdonald and you'll never look back! -
1970 P bass fingerboard radius?
franzbassist replied to franzbassist's topic in Repairs and Technical
I wouldn't be surprised if it was a 7.5". Here's some gauges in pdf format - although 7.5" isn't there it should give you a decent idea.
That's great, thanks very much! -
Hello all I want to give the board on my bass a light sand but need to get the right sanding block. I assume it'll be 9.5" radius but can anyone confirm this? Cheers Gareth

Depends how big and loud your band is, but I use mine with the Ashdwn LB212 cab and it does the job no problem. There's always the DI out too...

Morning all Decided to sell my Streamliner 600, simply because it's way more powerful than I need and my LB30/ABM300 heads are more than adequate for my gigs at the moment. A couple of light scratches to the case, but overall in tip top condition. Has the fairly typical scratchy volume pot problem, but that's probably due to lack of use on my part to be honest! A firm £440 posted, which includes a brand new Gator gig bag, or collection from Central London or NE Hampshire welcome. Cheers Gareth

Fantatsic news Rod, it was a pleasure to help and I am so glad the amp is delivering! And Dave, nice score on the AE212! Cheers Gareth
Are those lollipops?
Sure are, and threaded saddles too, so a real transition bass.

Lovely vintage '70 Fender Precision fretless
franzbassist replied to Clarky's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
Dirty Porn thread created here -
So, after Clarky spotted this bass on eBay I spoke with the shop selling the bass and bought it direct, as the opportunity to get a first production year fretless P was just too good to pass up. I received the bass yesterday, and I spent last night dismantling it, giving it a good clean, fitting an East P-Retro circuit, some aged Fender pickup screws (the orginal pots and screws were long gone, so I had no qualms doing this) and a set of medium D'Addario Chromes to replace the black nylons that had been on there since 1985! A quick set up later and we were in business. The bass was dirty, and I mean very dirty, with lots of grime and oxidisation. A naphtha bath for almost all the metalwork cleaned things up no end, and although I got patches of the body to clean and gloss back up, a lot of it has resisted and stayed quite grimy. It's almost as if the muck has penetrated the finish and, in a couple of places, there are even fingerprints visible! I'll keep going at it to see if I can improve it, but at least most of this is confined to the back. There's quite a lot of checking in the finish too. The bass has a December 1970 neck with a lovely rosewood fingerboard. The neck is in great shape. The oval tuners and threaded saddles look original to the bass, even though they had been officially phased out by 1970 - perhaps it was an older body from around 1968 but finished with a new neck? The bass balances very well and weighs a shade under 9lbs. It plays beautifully and I have a nice low action with minimal curve to the neck. The sound? Deliciously woody and smoky in passive mode, which is I am sure how I will use it most of the time, but the P Retro in active mode may well come in useful for subtle changes of eq when I need to cut through. Overall though, a lovely bass. Some pictures for your pleasure.... 9/2012 Update: I removed the new pots and jack and replaced them with a genuine harness from 1968. Also now sports La Bella medium flats.

1973 Fretless Fender Precision - 100% original - SOLD
franzbassist posted a topic in Basses For Sale
Hello all For reasons I won’t bore you all with (but needless to say involves some poor planning on my part) I recently acquired two Fender fretless P basses from the early 1970s. One, a first production year 1970, is now in my posession, and the other, which I won via auction, is due to arrive from the US next week. The bass I’m looking to sell is from 1973, and the auction description is as follows: Fender Fretless Precision Bass Sunburst Electric Bass Guitar, #506663. Rare fretless model, has minimal weather checking. Has a few scuffs, dings, and scrapes overall. Minimal play wear to fretless neck. Pot dates to tenth week of 1973. Original hard case included. Condition: Good. I haven’t played the bass,, but you can see from the images that it’s in superb condition. Now, I don’t need two fretless P basses, so this one is available for £1750 plus postage Cheers Gareth
