1. As some of you may have seen, I've been keen to try and sort out a Silver Slap low B for my BSX. Well, after a call to the folks at Innovation yesterday, I am pleased to say that not one but two low Bs arrived this morning, with a note saying "tell me what you think of these". How's that for service? Tony followed up my thank you email to say that the two strings are of a different formula, so this is as much an experiment for him as it is for me. Cheers Gareth
 2. Tenor guitars were originally created to aid the transition of banjo players to guitar in the early C20th. Also, they're tuned in fifths, not fourths like a bass, so quite a different beast. While CGDA is common, GDAE or GDAD are also popular.
 3. Steven bought a gig bag off me. A pleasure to deal with; prompt payment, good comms. Recommended!!!
 4. After many years as a Levys Leathers user, I have recently gone over to Harvest Leather. Bought two of these, and for the price I reckon they're hard to beat! Cheers Gareth
 5. Shep's a good guy. He bought a DVD from me that Royal Mail managed to lose, and rather than demand his money back was fine with splitting the loss. I'd be more than happy to deal with him again; yet another first class Basschatter!
 6. eltel? You're not Terry Finch by any chance are you?
 7.
I've gone and sold the Veillette Acoustic Bass I was going to bring (which is a really shame 'cause it's a stunner
8.
As a newbie I am discovering that each type/model of DB suits certain strings better. Given DB strings are typically £75-100+ a set (over £200 for Garbos!) this makes finding the right set-up bl**dy expensive ...
Morning Clarky Yes, I guess DBs are no different to electric basses in that regard, just a lot more expensive as you say, and when you factor in personal taste as well it gets much more complicated! An email from Tony at Innovation has pinged into my inbox. He thinks the 3/4 Silver Slaps should work okay on the BS, as the synthetic core should just wrap around the tuners and not break, so I'll give them a go and report back. It may look a bit unsightly, but if it works I may be able to convince him to make a BSX-specific set in the future. Cheers Gareth
 9.
As soon as I find the Honey D I'll post it on. (I've put it somewhere safe!)
Somewhere safe? We'll never see that again then! Seriously though, much appreciated Keith.
 10.
I take it you play a lot of slap stuff?
Funnily enough, I don't! I just really like the tone, tension and feel of these strings.
I know a very good rockabilly bassist who uses spirocore solo sets, downtuned to regular orchestral tuning, to get the sound of steel strings with a low tension for slap. Perhaps that would work for you on the EUB if the scale suits Thomastik strings?
Yes, I had thought of that option too, but I think I want to see if I can emulate the "grippy" feel of the Silver Slaps first.
Some people just don't have that musician spirit about them I guess.
Indeed. Not a very sensitive approach to your condition at the time. Thanks for the input.
 11.
Hi Gareth, My Kolstein takes 1/2 scale I ordered a 1/2 sized Honey D to try out which didn't suit it. You can have it to try out if you want to. Let me know if and when the spiro's are for sale. 'best Keith
Hi Keith That's be great, thanks very much! The Spiros will definitely be for sale. The speaking length of the strings is fine and they stay in tune well, but the silks are fuzzy and there's some loose tape up around the top end on a couple of the strings. Not really sure what to ask, but maybe we could PM about that? Cheers Gareth
 12. Hello all General bit of advice please, from those more versed in the dark art of upright than my nascent fublings.... I was using Silver Slaps on my Aria EUB and absolutely loved the tone, feel and tension of those strings. However, the BSX 5 string I've just taken delivery off came strung with Spirocore Weich, which while quite nice don't have the same "grip" under the finger and also have a higher tension. Due to the small body, the tailpiece is much closer to the bridge, even though the scale is 41.5", and as such the BSX uses 1/2 scale strings for EADG and a 3/4 scale string for the low B (this string is furthest from the nut, above the E and A tuners). Innovation don't make Silver Slap in a 1/2 scale (yes, I have asked) and I'm pretty sure a custom Silver Slap low B would be too floppy and unarticulate, so since they also have a synthetic core I was wondering if a set of Innovation Honeys would be a suitable halfway house between Silver Slaps and Spiro Weich in terms of tension? Or is there anything else out there that can give me "grip" and low tension in a 1/2 scale? Cheers Gareth
 13.
Hi Nikki Just saw your ad - are you still looking for a bass player/vocalist? I'm based in Watford, so not too bad for distance. If you are still looking, you can get me on 07590 043800. Barry Anderson
Hi Barry I'm pretty sure this post has been filled (no, not by me) Cheers Gareth
 14. The saddle shoud just lift out, so check there are no shims already in there. If ther are, that's the quick way to lower the action. Then file the saddle down as neepheid suggested. Personally I'd take off the bottom, as it's easier to file flat than reprofile the top of the saddle. Might also want to mark a line across the bottom (or top) showing how much you want to take off, rather than leaving it to guess work once you get going. I made a whole new saddle from a bone blank for my Brook, and it was a surprisingly easy and enjoyable experience! If you are in any doubt about your skills, get a pro to do the work. cheers Gareth
 15. I had one for a while. Hard to beat from a price and weight point of view, bloomin' loud as well and the fan was whispher quiet. If separates are the way you want to go, and you're happy with a 2u amp, then go for it. Cheers Gareth
 16. Excellent news!
 17.
SOLD. PM me your paypal and I'll pay tonight dude. Shep
Nice one, PM coming now.
 18. OK, thanks, add a quid towards the postage?
 19.
Gareth, No, not damaged, it's still as gorgeous as ever. Trouble is, I've been made a tentative offer for it that I can't really refuse and, although I dearly want to keep hold of it, needs must. At least I have a Paris on the way in a month or two. Phil PS. Thanks all for the suggestions.
Wow, I would say I'm surprised, but as I'm selling my Brook I can't really! Is it staying in the UK or going overseas?
 20. Hi Phil My Brook came in a Kinsman case from JHS. It does the job. Looks like they're around £55 online. Why do you need to ship your bass? Is it damaged? Cheers Gareth
 21.
After re-think and lots of communication with Eminence players (all happy!) I am adding this back to my potential buy list. Following advice on how an Eminence should play, I am pretty confident that the one I tried at the Gallery was just not set-up right and needed lower tension strings. So does anyone have a nice playing Eminence they wish to move on?
Hi Clarky I agree. I bet lower tension strings and running it into a suitable imepdance head or pre would make a huge difference. Also, that bass is a commission sale and when I asked Alex about it a while back he came back to me with a reduced price, so may be worth checking again (unless he already volunteered the info when you visited)? Cheers Gareth
 22. I think Toby Chennell uses these as standard on the basses he makes, which seems like a pretty good recommendation.
