Hi Barrie This is a subject close to my heart, and I have gone for a really acoutsic, organic tone over the last couple of years.
Godin perhaps, even though it is more semi acoustic? I would imagine even in a fully acoustic set, you're going to need amplification of some sort. With all the will in the world, and acoustic bass isn't very bassy without it!
+ 1 to this. I have a beautiful hand made fretted 5 string by Brook Guitars down in Devon. It's a serious high end bass and has the most stunning flamed myrtle back and side. It copes very well against two unamplified guitars when played with a pick, and has a pickup in it as well so I can use it "plugged" but still have the acoustic look. If you want something that has a good acoustic vibe but is more like an electric to play then a Godin or any decent hollowbody would serve you well. I had a fretless Godin briefly and, while it was a bit of a one trick pony, it did that trick very well! However if you really want to splash the cash something like my Veillette Archtop fretless would do the job very well indeed. And then, if you just want to look acoustic, a solid body made to look like an ABG is an option, just like the Samick that has just sold in the For Sale section. Cheers Gareth
All, I'm on the point of commissioning a somewhat unusual custom Veillette bass and the instrument needs a rather unusual pickup – a 5 string P type split pickup in white (rather than the usual black). Anybody know who makes such a beast? Phil
I'd imagine any of the bespoke makers, such as Nordstrand, Wizard, Delano etc.could so that for you Phil, but I suspect it won't be cheap as it's a one off! Sounds fascinating, tell us more! Gareth

Was this in a shop? Those Guilds are terrific basses. Medium scale IIRC?

I take all my accressories to a gig in a Magma Multi-Purpose Studio Bag, which has tons of pockets and an adjustable interior, so I can set it up to hold different items according to my needs. Currently, it contains:

Radial Tonebone 2 channel preamp/DI and PSU
TC Electronics Noya Dynamics 2 channel compressor pedal and PSU
Earplugs
2 x Hercules Stands
1 spare kettle plug lead
4 gang extension lead
3 x OBBM instrument cables
3 x OBBM speaker cables
lots of misc patch leads
Tool kit
Box of spare 9V batteries
One set of spare strings
A4 Ring binder with misc charts
Roll of gaffa
I kept my EA Doubler in there as well until I sold it. If I get another head as a backup I'll most likely go for a micro again and keep it in the bag as well. I think that covers it! Cheers Gareth

I picked up this same model Demeter a few weeks ago. Owen was very kind to give me his thoughts before I bought it, and I must admit his review was spot on. He said: I plugged several bass guitars in and they all sounded good. no need for excessive EQing, they just worked. Did it colour the sound - Mmmm yes. In a good way. No harshness, or EQ extremes, just solid usable tone. Good headroom and control. And I couldn't agree more. I'm really pleased with how all my basses sound through this preamp; they just sound right. Cheers Gareth

Not the most reliable test I suspect, as it's self-administered, but useful nonetheless. Can't analyse it scientifically, but it looks like ten years of wearing decent moulded earplugs has served me well. That said, I only started wearing them once I had permanent tinnitus, as evidenced by the total loss of top end (although I believe that isn't unusal for an adult anyway). Good thread; kudos to the OP. Gareth
