1. THIS BASS HAS BEEN WITHDRAWN FROM SALE Okay folks, I think it’s time to sell my beloved Mk III Wal. Please don’t start posting with messages saying “don’t do it”, “it’s a keeper” etc. I have thought long and hard about this and I’ve decided it’s just too much bass to have sitting at home not getting any playing time. This is a very special bass to me for a number of reasons, but probably the most important one for everyone else is that it is the last bass Pete Stephens made before he retired, so it truly does represent the end of the original Wal line. So, what else makes this bass so special? Well, it has a few unique features:

it’s the only Wal with spalted maple facings, supplied to Pete by me from a ski-ing holiday in Vermont
American walnut core (usually mahogany)
the custom neck pickup placement makes the bass a tad punchier and, to me, more ergonomic when playing fingerstyle (one other Wal has this pickup arrangement as well, which was also made for me)
bound veneer around the pickups
double pinstripe laminate (usually only one) between the core and facings
Pete’s personal “fish” logo on the back of the headstock
Weighing it at 10.5lb (4.75kilos), the bass balances well with no neck dive at all. It delivers all the classic Wal tones (and I’ve owned enough of them over the years to know!); big fat punchy bass but with plenty of control and presence. You can go from almost subharmonic to crystal-clear highs in the turn of a knob. If you like the Wal sound, then this bass is for you. (NB: If anyone needs to know more about the Wal electronics and how they work, please visit the Wal website here for full details). Paul Herman, former Electric Wood employee and the new owner of the Wal brand, gave it a PLEK setup and service in November last year. Anyway, enough nattering, here are some pictures. Wear is very light. Believe it or not it’s never been my main bass so has spent a lot of time safely wrapped up in the top of the line Levy’s gig bag that will be included in the sale. There are no noticeable scratches or dings. The only real wear I can ascertain is where the poly finish has lifted a bit on the body adjacent to one of the neck bolts. As to price, well, a new standard MkIII 5 string would cost £3200 right now and a wait of at least a year. I think, given how rare Wals are in general and the moment in Wal history that this bass represents, I’m asking £3300 firm. No offers and no trades. Oh, and I would prefer not to post as I don’t have a hard case, but will do so if it’s really necessary (would recommend a hard case is added to the deal if that’s the, ahem, case). If you’re interested I would encourage you to try the bass out. I live in NE Hampshire and work in Central London, so tryouts in either location are fine. I can’t provide any sound clips as I have no recording facilities, but you can see me playing the bass at Guilfest 2006 via the youtube link below. 2. Looks good Andy. Just got to shift your *other* SWR rig now!
 3.
Have to say i don't know! Is there a different model number?
No I don't think so, but it's worth checking.
 4.
Yeah it's cool, i'll need to get in there to test everything out before selling it anyways so taking pics of everything whilst i'm there makes sense. I'll have a chat to em soon
I've spoken to my guys and we're really keen for the mixer and amp. Is the mixer the USB/Cubase version?
 5.
I'll try to get in the storage room to get pics next week
Don't go out of your way on my account. Tell you what, speak to the guys about one amp and the mixer for me? It probably makes more sense for us to source some subs locally.
 6.
Could post but it might end up being quite expensive! Packing the QSC and desk together and sending it with Interparcel/Parcelbee might be the way to go on that one I'll try to get pics but it might be a while as they're in storage and our drummer has the key I'll have a chat to the guys about any discounts as it's between the 3 of us
That's fine, as long as I have first dibs. I've done a quick google for details of the subs but to no avail; any more detail on them? Cheers Gareth
 7.
1 x QSC RMX2450 amps - £370 each 2 x EV GSS 15XR 400w bass bins, again nice and compact - £200 pair 1 x Yamaha MG206C desk, bought new last year and been racked all it's life - £220
I'd be interested in all of this. Discount for a bulk buy? Can you post? Cheers Gareth
 8.
I think I'm having one of those "mid life" moments - just want to free up some money and get a new project underway. The gigs aren't paying enough these days. And the car is getting older...kids are getting bigger...etc etc There will be a lot more stuff going in the next few weeks...
I hear you on that one. I've just put my NL210 and Fylde bouzouki up for sale, and I'm even contemplating letting the Wal go (it won't be cheap though)!
 9. Duncan, what on earth are you doing selling this??!!!!!
 10. Pretty much mint condition and with an EA padded cover. Woofer: 2 Custom Neodymium Kevlar 10" Tweeter: 1" Phenolic Compression Driver with level control on rear Frequency Response: 45Hz to 14kHz Sensitivity: 100dB @ 1m Sound Pressure Level: 127dB @ 1m Power Handling: 500 watts Impedance: 8 ohm Connection: Two Speakon Jacks Size: 22.5"H x 17"W x 15"D Weight: 44 lbs These are £800 new, plus another £80 for the cover. I'm looking for just £375, collected from NE Hampshire please.
 11. Good plan, I shall do that. Thanks again.
 12. Thanks for that Stevie. Yes, had a pair years ago and these were so cheap I just figured they'd be good to have around. Not using the controller though; all it was in reality was a fixed eq and they sound perfectly good without it. So what do you reckon power-wise, 500 watts into each?
 13. Hi guys I just got hold of a pair of Bose 802 speakers and was wondering what would make a good match for them amp-wise. The specifications are as follows: 8 ohms impedance 240w Continuous - 320w Peak power rating 55Hz to 16kHz ± 3dB frequency response 99 dB SPL ( 1 W, 1 m, 300 Hz - 3kHz ) 92 dB SPL ( 1 W, 1 m, 50 Hz - 16kHz pink noise ) sensitivity Probably won't be running subs with them. They'll typically be amplifying the following: 4 vocals 1 keyboard 4 acoustic guitars, mandolin and banjo (not all at the same time) Drums will be unmiced and my bass will use backline Any suggestions? Cheers Gareth
 14.
As a LMK user, I'm keen to hear your thoughts on this. I've always heard good things about SWR and this has caught my eye. FP
I haven't had a chance to plug it in yet, but aim to give it a good run tomorrow.
 15.
Great to see another bass player who also a bouzouki player, or are you soon to be an ex bouzouki player?
Well, I don't want to be an ex-player, but I could do with the cash right now.
 16. By "white bit" you mean the nut? Have you changed brand or gauge recently? If so the string may be a touch loose in the nut and you'll need to pad it out a bit; a piece of paper under the string or an elastic band (or hairband!) around the headstock at the nut can both work well as a cheap and simple fix.
 17. EA Micro head into a Wizzy 10 cab - a 550 watt rig weighing just 19lbs for the two EA even make a backpack to put them both in!
 18. Watch this
 19. Pull the string up once you have inserted it but before you push the pin down hard. The ball end should be pressed up against the bridge plate.
 20. I absolutely love this, but I could do with some spare wedge at the moment, so I'm putting it up for sale at £650 posted, or collected/delivered NE Hampshire or Central London. From 2003, it's in superb condition. Comes with a very nice hard shell case. No pickup fitted. THIS IS NOW SOLD
 21. A tad optimistic on the BIN price I think
 22.
Perfect - put me down for first refusal if you don't like / get bored with it
Will do Barrie, although I suspect I will be liking it quite a bit.
 23.
I'd love to know how these compare to a MarkBass LittleMark.
I have just sold an LMK so will be able to give you a fresh comparison once I've tried mine out on Monday evening. As to price, I bought mine from Musik Schmidt for £600, which was discounted from their already discounted price to match Thomann (who have no stock). Not sure what the UK RRP is, or what the "street" price will be, but I'd be surprised if it's much lower.
