Markbass K1 Combo - the new K(ing) on the block?
franzbassist replied to Al Krow's topic in Amps and Cabs
aesthetically it lacks something
I usually hate the look of Markbass stuff, but I love this combo. It'd be a boring world if we all liked the same things.... -
Markbass K1 Combo - the new K(ing) on the block?
franzbassist replied to Al Krow's topic in Amps and Cabs
The lovely Georgie from DPD dropped off my K1 this morning It's a beast. I was worried about the weight, but actually it's totally fine and an easy lift. Tweeter is very musical, not at all harsh, so my fears there were unfounded. It's very loud. -
It does look fantastic, I agree! The more closely I look at it though, it seems to be a somewhat different product to the existing Lite Alain Caron. The K1 loses the VLE (agree with Muppet, this is no great loss) and mute as noted above, but also loses the aux in and headphone sockets as far as I can tell (which can be really useful if you want the occasional late night practice session at home). The K1 seems to me to be geared more to live performance and has a heck of a lot going for it. Which would I buy if they had both been available? That is actually a tricky question...there are definitely plusses and minuses (particularly weight) which means I think there will definitely be a market for both. I would probably still opt for the 121 Lite Alain Caron but continue to hanker after the K1 every time I see it in action, with an extension cab, played live by a great bassist! (Is that a bit like marrying a great girl but still being distracted by a supermodel walking passed?
Spot on. I debated between the two for some time and decided that, as I'll be using it as gigging amp, I'd go for the extra power and articulation the K1 brings over the more studio friendly/home practice facilities on the Lite. -
A deal as smooth as my flatwound strings saw Mark relieve me of a Berg cab for a wedge of his cash. Terrific deal, great comms, and a pleasure to deal with.

Markbass K1 Combo - the new K(ing) on the block?

I spotted it at the London Bass Guitar Show and just loved the concept. I really like the tone you get from 12" drivers, and also I find that 5" speakers give a really nice natural warmth to the top end. The power is ridiculous, but headroom is a beautiful thing.... -

Has anyone gone from lightweight back to heavy?
franzbassist replied to AndyTravis's topic in Amps and Cabs
Having spent some time using lightweight stuff, I've just bought the new Markbass K1 combo, which weighs in at a rather thoughtful 59.75lbs -
ACG basses have flat as standard.
I suspect the guitar version will follow... Jacks take up less chassis room too.
It's already out

I play fretless in my main band 100% of the time, as when I'm not on a fretless I'm on an upright! I prefer fretless over fretted for three reasons i) it suits the kind of music my band plays ii) I find it a far more expressive instrument iii) I can make a fretless sound like a fretted bass, but you can't make a fretted sound fretless. If I pick up a bass at home, it'll be a fretless.

Original Made in Italy model, 500 watts at 4 ohms and 300 watts at 8 ohms. Valve driven preamp, compressor, eq and "colour" sections. Original Bang and Olufsen analogue power supply. Comes with Roqsolid cover and the official Markbass bag. Excellent condition. The logo plate has come off but I can supply decent double sided tape to stick it back on. A superb head. Ridiculously loud. Its core tone is clean and warm, and the dare I say "heft" from the valves and B&O power supply is a thing of beauty

Active/Passive Input switch
Preamp (ECC83)
Compressor (ECC81)
EQ (ECC83): passive bass (±6 dB @ 80 Hz) / middle (+4 / -6 dB @ 800 Hz)/ treble (+5 / -4 dB @ 5 kHz)
Colour (ECC83): This is the same as the VLE treble roll off found on other Markbass amps, starting at 20kHz and increasing down to 500Hz
Power Amp: Analog “Tube Technology Emulator” puts out 500W @ 4 ohms or 300W @ 8ohms
Outputs: Speakers (2 speakon combo) and a XLR line out
Weight: 6 kg / 13.23 lbs
Official Markbass bag (£60 RRP) Roqsolid cover (£26 RRP)

Does anyone know of any other small footprint power amps out there? SWR Amplite - rare Demeter Minnie - expensive!
