1.
One thing I noticed is that this is a path that is hardly unique. Gary Moore went from rock to blues.
Gary Moore's journey was nowhere near that straightforward - he was playing Jazz (or at least Jazz-Rock) early on in his career.
 2. Wouldn't that be to stop your arm from dampening the resonant quality of the soundboard? edit - or is that what you meant by muting, as I guess it could be?
 3.
Make sure it's right. My son works in Japan and obviously speaks Japanese. There's a trend for Western free spirits to have 'Free' tatoo'ed in Japanese. Unfortunately the tattooists aren't fluent and have branded them free, as in cheap/good value. The Japanese are of course too polite to comment, but have some fun at our expense.
Luckily, Ambient comes across as a good guy. Can't see him scoring out Agadoo as a cruel joke!!
 4. Had a Marshall MB 410 combo go up in smoke at a jam night in Saxmundham. Probably the most exciting thing that had happened there that year In my record company days, I was at a Nazareth gig that we were filming - Garage, Glasgow I think. Someone had decided they didn't need to bother unreeling all the cable for the lights. Had to move all the audience away and the director had to choose some careful camera angles until it had been extinguished. Band didn't miss a beat!
 5. Some fabulous editing (and playing). Overall, I have to say, I preferred the Fodera. Lindo came in second, as, apart from when the tone was rolled back, and when he went up the dusty end, I really didn't like the sound of the Jazz. Another great video from this guy.
 6. Been watching this from the start (silently) and, to be honest, with a large element of "what the...", but similarly expecting something quite amazing to reveal itself. Well it certainly has done. That picture with it strung up and with the acoustic bridge in place - that is one very special instrument. Amazing work. And well done Mick for the brave and bold vision.
 7. Loved the set. I can see why some were not so keen on the bass sound and style, but personally, I just got caught up in the exuberance of the performance. Fun, brash, in your face, over the top excellence. (Just came over all Len Goodman there)
 8. Ooh, look forward to catching up with this.
 9.
Fair point! Hmm... Not sure if buying a strap, albeit a vegan vinyl strap, from a company specialising in leather goods is in the spirit and ethos of vegan..? The Californian Couch straps look to be about as vegan as they come. Worth inquiring as to availability, for those interested in cruelty-free, no sweat-shop, vegan products, maybe..? Not bothered, myself; just sayin'.
10. Here's another source - looks like quite a popular movement: http://basschat.co.uk/topic/306518-righton-handmade-straps-spain/
 11. There's also the non-playing ownership to consider. I knew the artist rep for Gibson UK in the 90s. He told me a huge number of their guitars were being bought by well paid professionals to hang on the office wall. Guys (always guys) who had longed for a Les Paul in their youth but couldn't afford it were buying them as trophies. Gibson were at that time trying to align themselves as the third iconic American brand. Ride a Harley, drink JD, play a Gibson. I'm guessing the guys reaching this point of their career now don't have the same interests anymore.
 12. Humble Yamaha TRBX 304 or 504 being used by Songhoy Blues.
 13. OK, slightly more useful, 51m0n has written lots on compression on here - here's a link to one of his recommendations. There's also an excellent archived piece by him if you search deeply enough: http://basschat.co.uk/topic/184174-which-compressor-pedal/page__p__1771724__hl__51m0n__fromsearch__1#entry1771724
 14.
I raised this point sometime back and I was firmly told I was talking complete trash. Youngsters are as excited about music now as they ever were. Privately I think video games and other tech has been the replacement activity that now provides the distraction and entertainment. The exception to this is where the young have musical role-models who help keep live music on the agenda.
Video games and tech are really mass market. I think some people are thinking that playing an instrument is way more mainstream than it actually is, or ever was.
 15. Pretender bass player had an interesting rig - two Ampegs with one 410 each, and a little Portaflex that didn't seem to be mic'ed up.
 16. Another swift and easy transaction with Dave with new, longer jack to speakon cable arriving in the post today. Thanks Dave.
 17.
But bus and taxi no problem ?
18.
Just watching it now. Whilst I can see the point of drum screens, and if it helps on stage sound levels, mic bleed, etc and makes for a better sound then fair play, I really think it looks odd, like the drummer is in the shower or something. Really good performance so far though
Martin Chambers has used one for a long time. I'm guessing he's a pretty big hitter, and wouldn't be surprised if Chrissie Hynde requested (insisted on) it. Tedeschi Trucks Band have drummers and amplification behind screens, but not as tall as this one.
 19. Really enjoying it on iPlayer - proper rock & roll live performance. That's where it is all at for me!
 20.
Hi Mike. For song writing - all of them except for a Christmas CD he put out for some inexplicable reason. For the bass playing, the early ones had Hutch Hutchinson on bass, the middle period had the marvellous Reggie McBride and the latter period has a role call of some of the great bassists still active today. IMO they are all good, but I'd start with Just Like You, Keep It Simple, Suitcase, The Reflection, Slowdown and The Door. Then work around to the others in time. There is also an early DVD Keb Mo sessions at West 54th which is worth owning. Edit: there's an Infinity Hall gig on Youtube with Vail Johnson on bass and a few more videos worth watching with his current line up, Stan Sargeant on bass.
Thanks Chris.
 21.
I'm not a "completest" by any means and there are a couple of stinkers in here that even I wouldn't buy, but I have nearly all the CD's and some of the vinyl by the Band, Little Feat, Keb Mo and Delbert McClinton.
I need some Keb Mo in my library but there's a lot to choose from - care to point me in the right direction Chris? Thanks. (Thread hijack over)!
 22.
It's a cycical thing. We get the same sort of articles over here every few years. I remember journalists claiming guitar music was dying in the 90s just before the Britpop explosion of the 90s, and again shortly before Artic Monkeys inspired a whole load of new guitar bands.
Yes, the piece managed to completely miss Oasis, who single handedly revived the ES style guitar.
My niece is in her mid twenties and she would disagree. She and her friends love guitar, based, bands. She loved Johnny Marr, and John Mayer (very different styles), when she was growing up. She also loved Courtney Love and her band Hole, which were very guitar based. She loved guitars so much that she stole her dad's and formed her own band. Her band is doing pretty good and she plays to sold out venues in the UK and Europe (she's toured the US too, a couple of times). She's now one of the 10 acts that have been shortlisted for the Scottish Album Of The Year awards 2017. Hopefully she'll inspire a whole new generation of kids to get themselves an electric guitar. I know it was the best decision, the 16 year old me, ever made. This is her...........guitar bands rule!!
That's great! Oh, and plenty of guitars in use in Somerset this weekend!!
 23. Seeing this thread revisited reminded me a needed a new, slightly longer speaker cable. Just ordered and yet again excellent service from Dave.
