1.
Because I have different priorities. On things which do not relate to musical education in schools.
So if you remove musical from the last response, are you happy funding education with your taxes? If so, do you really feel that you should be able to pick and choose on such a level as to how education is delivered? Music has a profound effect on literacy, much music theory is intrinsically tied to mathematics, and it has a great impact on the soft skills that children need to learn (the latter being much in demand by groups including the CBI and Russell Group universities).
 2.
I don't begrudge your taxes going to fund musical education in schools. Just mine. Plenty of musical charities out there if anyone wants to send them a tenner. .
Why do you begrudge your taxes being spent in this way? How would you prefer it to be spent?
 3. Another sad 2016 loss, and another victim of pancreatic cancer. Fabulous artist, and a great shame she didn't quit e make the breakthrough she deserved. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iRENaUQc5No
 4. This will probably come in at less than £200 - I bought one of their kits and carriage and duty were very reasonable http://byoguitars.com/Guitars/Mighty-Mite-P-Bass-Neck-wMaple-Fingerboard__MM2907.aspx
 5.
Having owned a few later Arias I can confirm they are good-quality instruments and great value for money. And that's the downside, certainly as far as valuations are concerned, because for some reason they don't sell for much - I'd think £150 is about what I d expect this bass to sell for.
Very much this. Aria suffer with being very unfashionable (barring one line of 80's models), and as so there are two prices - what they are worth, and what they fetch, with the latter being significantly lower than the former Enjoy a very well made, low cost bass, just don't expect much if you want to move it on. Oh, and welcome to the forum.
 6. Listening to this - what fabulous phrasing:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bJd2Y51nTtE
 7.
I've tried contacting them and it's gone a bit quiet........Not sure if they are still trading.
I think Mike Walsh is concentrating on building basses again, but he's a really nice guy, and has a good reputation on here. Try getting him via Zoot Basses http://www.zootbass.com
 8. Get a fretless 5 - mine is the only bass I use and love it!
 9. Ah, set off nicely by the formica table
 10. This one may be a little over-indulgent for some tastes but hey, let's celebrate some amazing writing! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yp8gr05o-co

 12.
Keep the playing simple. You also won't get as much sustain out of your strings as usual. It's usually less of a problem than you might think. I've done gigs at skiing events where, even under lights, the stage temperaure was barely above freezing. Just keep your hands warmed up between songs. I did try one of those little metal boxes that hunters use. They're lined with something fireproof and you leave a slow-burning piece of charcoal in them. They fit in your pocket. To be honest, I didn't really need it in the end though.
The gel type versions of these available in Millets and other camping/outdoor shops.
 13.
How is it that songs with chord sequences such as I, V, IV and I, V, VI, IV continue to be written and recorded? Surely any songwriter or artist with any integrity or artistic worth would avoid such overused, over-familiar changes in favour of something less cliched.

A great songwriter can make the simplest, off the shelf, chord structure, into a great song.

Completely true, however, some songwriters take the most overused, off the shelf chord structures and turn them into dull, formulaic fodder for the masses.
Which is somewhat different to your initial post. Artists with integrity and artistic worth will continue to make great songs from the simplest of chord structures.
 14.
Or even better... listen to The Little Willies' version. Norah Jones on lead vocals and a sleazy, greasy, downbeat feel... stunning!
Like that a lot!!
 15. I love the irony of this post being in off topic "But you don't really care for music, do you?" I'd like to think he'd see the funny side too!
 16. Country music probably epitomises the ideal of "playing for the song", which, as you've probably gathered by now means nno embellishment from the bass. Would love to work out the ratio of bass to guitar notes on this clip!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nwws6XPZ1JM
 17.
Bass guitar has been being used as an upfront melodic & solo instrument in folk rock music for decades. Check out some of the superb playing by Rick Kemp (Steeleye Span) & Dave Pegg (Fairport Convention) back in the 70s,
And on some of their later stuff - here's a lovely bit right at the top of this Fairport track - lots more nice playing through the rest of the album. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hN-Z5H7TJQE
 18.
Yes I know, many of us think that this is impossible. I also realise that many people do not like folk or traditional music. But... have a listen to this from 1 minute in. It just might change your mind (or at least give some food for thought)
Like it a lot, and the bass playing is fantastic and used to great effect, but is it lead/melodic? To me it wouldn't be anywhere near as effective without the vocal being there.
 19. I am a fan but I much prefer this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VJEZWsnIECo
 20. But I still can't help being an over-physical player
 21. There was some great science on this somewhere before - I'll see if I can find it. Edit - found it - scroll down beneath the pictures: http://www.garywillis.com/pages/bass/bassmanual/theramp.html
 22.
I've got a Behringer octave pedal that works fine. PM me your address and you can have it for free if you want it.
Does the Behringer do the octave up? Great if it does, but shows how poor my research was a couple of years ago :0
 23. Unless Joyo or Mooer have come up with something in the last couple of years I'm pretty sure you will struggle with a cheap Pog clone. Loads of octave pedals but very few that do the octave up. Plenty of cheap distortions though.
