When it comes to poor set up that really is the shop's responsibility. It amazes me that the one thing a bricks and mortar shop has over the likes of Thomann is that they can ensure every instrument from a beginner's cheapie, through to a custom shop Fender are absolutely perfect ( and still they don't)!!

They should be. Have a look at parts 2 & 5 on this link: https://www.gov.uk/employment-status/worker

starter acoustic for daughter? Budget £150 new or used
Mykesbass replied to skidder652003's topic in Guitars
Ive already got an old Yammie 310 knocking about ( for me). Went to mansons and picked up one of these used but mint for £140 http://www.fairdealm...0zhoaAuR-8P8HAQ Had a play on a few and this ticked all the boxes. Thanks for your inputs chaps.
That's a great buy - the Godin family of guitars can be ridiculously good bargains second-hand as they are not a well known brand, but the quality is excellent. -
Surely if the venue is paying the band then they're effectively on the venue's payroll, just like the temporary bar staff? For that evening.
No. This is treated as freelance work. You are not on their books for PAYE and National Insurance.
If I come into your place of work to carry out a job I'll be required to be insured against my actions, that goes for Tesco or a pub if you are going in as a worker not a customer. If the venue employed you directly it would indeed be their responsibility to ensure their insurance covered having a band with a stage and loose cables etc. Coming in at the request of the bride or the venue as a sub contractor you will need your own insurance, same will go for the disco, caterers if they are bringing equipment in, bouncy castle whatever, it's all standard stuff. We had three PAT test venues and one public liability request last year but probably more like a dozen gigs that should have asked us if they were doing their job properly.
^This. As a band you are self-employed, you haven't gone on the venue's payroll for the night.
Are you sure it isn't about Lee Marvin?
Only if they played the 7" at 33 rpm. -

Spandau Ballet - Listening to Marvin all night long (Hank or Gaye)? -
So subjective, but I've always loved the way double bass, acoustic guitar and vocals work so well together on the album this comes from: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ohmSPv-rtSQ

Bands, who had songs that were the same as the band name.
Mykesbass replied to MacDaddy's topic in General Discussion
Deep Purple were named after the song Deep Purple, but I don't think they ever performed it! -
It was 37 years ago today The London Calling album was released.
*1980 in America.
Yes, but 1980 should be regarded as the last year of the 70's (can of worms opened)! -
Carry on with what you're doing but make it more so then you'll be the one who gets noticed and is talked about. The others will start to feel a bit left out and, with a bit of lick, start trying to out perform you. Instant stage show.
Having seen Bertbass in action I must say this is great advice!

Not exactly a looker is it!!
I heard the horse and cart's making a comeback too
But cars are probably an improvement, can't say the same for streaming or downloads

Patch cables - Which ones? Make my own or buy pre-made?
Mykesbass replied to sirmuppet's topic in Accessories and Misc
I checked those out. They look pretty cool. Haven't heard much about them
Just put OBBM into the forum search bar - they are very highly regarded on here. Only cables I buy now (not that I've had to buy many as they've not needed replacing)! -
Neck Through or Bolt on, is there any practical difference?

Playing a guitar through a bass amp/cab.
Mykesbass replied to bubinga5's topic in General Discussion
+1 to reverb - home practice on a completely dry amp can sound a little dull. -
He also has (had?) the charcoal grey metallic listed on the website - that was pretty tempting too. I wonder if he's going to get a rush on Westfield P-bass sales Trying to justify why I wouldn't need another one... do basses get lonely?
Could be the new Sue Ryder basses 😃

Obviously not afraid of woofers.
I was well impressed with the service - Steve was so helpful and was willing to ship the bass despite not usually doing mail order over the net, and he packaged it up so well - best bass parcel I've ever had. I had been searching for a Westfield B1000 and his site never turned up in the Google search results (hence obscure... for certain values of obscure ). I actually came across the site because he is listed as a Cort retailer on the Cort website (I had been looking for a stockist of B4s) - went there and first bass in the list was the Westfield.
I can imagine the SEO for Westfield could be a little difficult what with that well known shopping mall! Steve's delighted with the positive comments, and a little bird tells me he has another identical one in stock...
an obscure music shop website (Bedrock Music in West Sussex - http://bedrockmusic.com/).
A proper, old school, independent music shop, Bedrock. Steve will love your description - we're good mates, I'll show him your post when I see him on Sunday!

Thanks everyone - will hang on and keep looking for a used MXR.
Worst experience I ever had was at the end of the first set, the drummer got up off his kit, walked to the front of the stage and keeled over. Ambulance was called and the paramedics did the full CPR deal then carted him off to hospital. A coronary, which happily he survived to gig again! Not much you do to prepare for that though, is there?
Sadly this happened during a rehearsal to a pianist I played in a big band with. A loud crash and I looked over my shoulder, laughed, thinking he'd fallen off his chair, then the horrible realisation of what had actually happened. Unfortunately he didn't survive. Lovely old boy
