2016 continues its relentless campaign of Total Bastardness
First came across him on a weird and wonderful Quincy Jones compilation. Was enthralled by what he could do with his harmonica - wonderful musician, and ripe old age.

Jazz Basses - what are they all about?!
So, we now have a second Guitarist miming when there is no second Guitar player on the track. Along with the Soprano sax, that's two musicians at the wrong gig. Oh, and one of those Drummers is at the wrong gig as well.
And NO bass player (not even the wrong one)!!
Headless Steinberger (?not my thing) with a pick played to a totally different rhythm, could it be much more different to the recorded bass?
Am I going mad - isn't that a second guitar, not a bass?
If you want to continue, you must post a Disco track.
Oh, OK then - full on, feelgood factor here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DotwLb_cNkY
Yes, Rose-Marie. I did some Bass deps for her around the time it was going on
Wow, small world
Oh, yes. A1 Records! I used to live on Massinger St, just off East Street. Blimey, we might have even crossed paths. I used to visit the both the shops and the stall. I often used to see Danny Baker and Pete Waterman in the shops. Didn't they have a small record label as well ?
Yes, and Lindsay Wesker and a couple of other Kiss DJs. I worked for the label - we had huge success with the Gipsy Kings, and also Steve Walsh. Also had a lot of success with an MoR act by the name of Rose-Marie, who then successfully sued, so the label folded When did you live there? I was born locally, went to school behind the Thomas a Beckett pub, and worked in the shop as a Saturday boy from 77, finished at the label in about 91. (Sorry Ian for the thread hijack)!!
I used to live in the OKR back then. Up near the 'Frog and Nightgown'. Gigged in some of those Pubs as well. A night out, was a night out, when pub crawling the OKR. Oh dear....messy... Out of interest, what record store did you work in? Odyssey. http://youtu.be/h1rH_iaZkv0
A.1. Stores on the Walworth Rd. It had a stall in East Street market which is why we could open on Sundays. Yes, OKR pub crawls were something else!!

U2 and the Irish Uprising of the Eightees
Mykesbass replied to SpondonBassed's topic in General Discussion
The success of this band along with the Boomtown Rats, Horslips, Christy Moore with the Moving Hearts and many others stirred the youth of a largely catholic and somewhat repressed Republic of Ireland to make their own way to the world music stage. We all know the hits, let's see some of the less well "promoted" songs, good, bad or indifferent -
Joseph O'Connor puts it brilliantly in this essay: http://www.josephoconnorauthor.com/erm-banana-republic-reflections-on-a-suburban-irish-childhood.html -
Teddy Pendergrass. Superb, soulful singer. Down Tempo, but what the heck. Teddy at his Soulful best.
Pure class - another huge "Sunday Morning" artist in the record store I used to work in

OK, something really obscure - big favourite of Greg Edwards, and the pubs along the Old Kent Road back in the day, probably featured musicians from bands such as Light of the World, Imagination and Incognito: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=93CVRqljpPU

MM & Jazz - isn't the jazz usually the neck pickup? Nothing wrong with being different though!
If you paste the url in from YouTube, they add the s to the http so it reads https. Seems the bass chat system doesn't like that, so try removing the s so it just starts with http.
Sorry, not the problem, I know about posting, this is being able to see videos others have already posted.

I'm using up to date Opera browser and up to date Flash Player, and yet only on Basschat embedded videos are not loading. Only happened a couple of days ago. Anyone else experiencing similar issues before I install a second browser? Thanks, Mike
In terms of songs provided as examples, the list seems pretty erratic. There are loads of songs mentioned on it that noone would have heard of and a LOT of genre-stretching. For example, LovexLove isn't "jazz disco" it's upbeat easy listening with jazz guitar and disco-influenced production. It's not genre defining, it's genre following. And Spacer isn't rock-influenced either, it was produced by the Godfather of disco for goodness sakes. Yet the most disco influenced rock songs (or should that be rock influenced disco songs) ever "You Sexy Thing" by Rod Stewart, "Missing You" by Rolling Stones and "Another One Bites the Dust" by Queen don't seem to get a mention...! I tend to think of disco as being three main sounds - East coast, West coast, and Philly. Philly was all romantic melodrama with those orchestral parts and many tracks were played by house band MSFB. East Coast was all about the New York scene (Chic, Sister Sledge, Sheila B, Diana Ross, Blondie etc) and looking sharp. West coast stuff was pretty much party-on, inspired by Brothers Johnson, EW&F, Kool, Quincy, Rod Temperton or any acts associated with them.
That's the trouble with trying to categorise music - it's either good or bad!! Do like the second paragraph though. Final point of order, I don't think Rod Stewart was ever in Hot Chocolate
