1. Always liked the look of those. I look forward to a full review!
2.
I'm near Uckfield. Brightons fine but Worthing and Horsham a bit far for regular stuff. I was in an originals band playing anything from indie to pop to rock but I'm a classic blues/rock lover really - root, 5th and octave (though I can't get enough of Rammstein at the moment .
Then check this out: https://www.facebook.com/Blues-Sundays-613703558712008/?fref=photo really friendly bunch, and a great way to meet potential band mates!
3.
Doesn't really count as an audition but.. I was bored and out on a business trip south of the Mason Dixon Line a few years ago and dropped into the local Sam Ash for a look see. They had an old Kalamazoo bass in so I had to try it, so noodled away on a 12 bar followed by an 8 bar. A long haired, bearded hulk of a guitarist guy cruised over and offered me a job in his band. I was very flattered and explained that I was British and only here for a couple of days. After a couple of "shee-its" and "goddamms" he offered me a go off his king sized spliff and asked if I could hang around for an hour so's his bass player could come over to learn the licks I'd just played. The bass man arrived 10 minutes later. The guitarist grabbed him by the beard, pulled out what looked like a mini baseball bat and said to me "Play!. In a quaking jelly terror I managed to stagger through 12 bars. The guitarist then shouted in his bass mans ear "Did you hear what he didn't play? Did you hear the space, m*****fkr?" "That's how you gotta play from now on, y'hear?" I have never left a music shop, trembling, so fast in my life. I hid out in my hotel room and the factory for the rest of the visit and was never so glad to suffer TSA security just to leave and go home.
Great story Jazzneck, and of course, he was absolutely right
4. Whereabouts in Sussex, and what music do you like? There's quite a friendly blues jam scene, with many of the same faces turning up at the Ranelagh (Brighton), Alexandra (Worthing), and Malt Shovel (Horsham).
5. Been gigging my Shuker (in the avatar) since 2012. Up close there is a fine pattern of scratches on the finish, and the board is nicely gnarled (always expected with a light wood fretlless board). It is currently the only bass I take to gigs, but a new development means that the seafoam green parts build P Bass is now staying with me and will be getting used (need the real vintage look). My third bass is a restoration project.
6. Could be a new film, The Dead Bassist's Society
7. Vinegar, and don't leave it in the spare room as the spores will start to spread!
8. If it makes up some of your livelihood is it worth speaking to the Leeds Community Foundation who are helping folks with uninsured goods and equipment?
9. How's your maths? Looks like there is some link with dyscalculia rather than dyslexia with trouble learning music theory. (only from a quick search, no real research on my part).
10.
Oh my word isn't it! There's something, whatever it is - call it X Factor or some deep psychological theory over what bonds musicians together in unspoken communication - but when you find them, as you say, it is so damn good!
Pretty sure I jammed with one of your old drummers a few years back - hadn't been back playing bass for long then, but boy that was special. So much control, so much feel. Never come across anyone else close to that.
11. I commissioned my Shuker P Bass when my mum surprisingly left me an unexpected bit of cash, so it is called "You Rosie" the phrase her mum used if my mum was in trouble. I don't ever find myself using the name, but then I don't find I need to refer to it at all - it's just there!
12. Great stuff! So, do you know which is the best bass for British metal/thrash/punk/crossover?
13.
but with that machine powering her along behind the curtains, she was never going to fail. Such is the music biz.
XL Recordings, part of Beggars Banquet, an incredibly long lived independent British label, hardly a fair description WoT!
14. As seen in post #3832 for a stunning version of a song I reckon hardly ever gets a live airing: http://basschat.co.u...10#entry2943067 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HPiqwvbegq0
15. Yep, great performer, and terrible start to the year. Something to remember her by: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DKAjcCW_jWQ
16. Congratulations Bleat & Alibabu, and sorry Alibabu for confusing you with some very English references on Soundcloud
17. Reminds me of the Harry Enfield Loadsamoney character - "had to buy a new car the other day - the old one was parked facing the wrong direction" (or same joke but "the ashtray was full")
18. Did one along those lines many years ago. The worst bit was the raffle, where they made sure there was a prize for everyone - went on for hours
19.
Incidentally, mentioned above was Tainted Love. The version we did, using real drums/bass, was patently a compromise and a case of ‘our own take’ – personally I hated it but it usually went down well.
I'd love to play this! 20. Having seen the OP, and before seeing the posts from EliasMooseblaster and alittlebitrobot, I went off to have a look at what was available and came across the awfully named Gimp and decided to give it a go. Now my software skills are pretty basic, but with the help of a couple of youtube guides I managed to create a fairly basic poster that was infinitely better than past attempts on MS Word. I'd highly recommend it.
21.
Talking of rocking it up, a band I was in 25 years ago (how time flies!) used to do a "We are Family" in the style of the Chilli Peppers crossed with the Dead Kennedys... It was the only cover we did though!
Different from what I had in mind - I think those re-workings can be great, and a lot of fun. It is more the idea from some players that playing louder, faster and more notes livens up a song, whereas often it will have the opposite effect.
22.
Wunjos had one to try last time I was there about a week ago
Interesting, they had one a couple of years back and were suggesting they were open to offers. Might be worth a call @Maude
23.
Badly played and over played songs are the danger for cover bands, but IMO a good song doesn't need much production. Like Buddy Holly songs, a good song can be stripped down to the bare bones and it'll still work. You've got to be Mr Pastry (google if you don't know him!) to make a mess of them. The other proviso is that simple songs have to be played well. You can't cut any corners or fudge anything or else they just won't work.
The other massive crime in my book is bands that use tempo and volume to "rock it up" - songs like Buddy Holly's, Little Richard's and specifically, Elvis' That's Alright Mama tend to fail when bands beef them up too much.
