1.
Yikes! Throw me a lifebelt (I'm way out of my depth)!
I'll PM you a brief history - unfair on newer members to make references to things long passed.
 2. Just seen a well known Ebay purveyor of fine, customised/professionally set up guitars flogging a standard HB Tele for £121!! (oh, plus carriage). Couldn't see if there was a Deko stamp n it.
 3. He who must not be mentioned on here (before the mods rap your knuckles)
 4. Stripping it all back down, shame, as my first attempts at spraying weren't too shabby at all! More PVA, and I must make sure I get it to stand proud of the wood this time. Got a second preamp from Osiris off here - had to really at the price he was selling! Onwards and, well, keeping level would be nice, upwards perhaps a little ambitious at this stage!!
 5. Just bought an Ibanez preamp from Sid, really fast delivery, and an excellent price. A pleasure doing business with you Sid!
 6.
it was more about those being the most expensive 810's i know nothing about brands.
Fair point
 7.
That's crazy!! That's more than the ampeg heritage 810! And the orange! Yeh it's gonna be light but Christ!
Don't quite get the logic of that argument (and not trolling or trying to pick a fight here). Surely it is down to which one is better, not the brand name?
 8.
Is that the one with maple fingerboard? Lovely! Is it very bright sounding with that??
It is actually Pau Amarello, or Yellowheart. Tougher than maple, and Jon thought it would stand up to wear better than maple. I have flates on it now, and it lovely and deep and thumpy, just how I like it! As for Fender, I've always been baffled by economics, in particular the need for growth. It looks to me as if the chasing of that growth, especially in a changing market (guitar music going in and out of fashion) is what has caused a lot of their woes.
 9.
I imagine it is very tricky to work out where to place a price as "good value" versus "cheap", whilst also trying to break-even/make a profit. I don't envy their job setting prices at all! I will have to ask how much the luthiers on here charge!
It must be very difficult, Fender have been getting it wrong for years now - look at the financial trouble they are in! My Shuker was great value - Jon under-priced it but stuck to his original quote. Should have been £1700 for a 5 string P Bass/Telebass. It is absolutely beautiful. 9 rows down, fretless on the left http://www.shukerguitars.co.uk/pbass.html
 10. The Star Bass does seem a little on the high side, especially when you see the 3,000+ euro RRP, but I guess that is low volume German manufacturing. With the quality from the Far east now so good it almost makes it seem not worthwhile to build a bass like that (without crazy expensive tonewoods etc) in Europe, but I guess there are still enough buyers who feel that the Far East basses are inferior or have a stigma attached to them. Fodera on the other hand is one of the largest can of worms you can open on here
 11.
I have never heard any musician say I don't like gigging... Are you just a TB reject member?
Oh come on, plenty of bedroom musicians who don't have the faintest interest of playing in anger, and then those that like creating and composing, primarily on computer, having no desire to strap on a plank of wood and get down the local pub. Yes, Blue does come across as provocative, but TB reject? Not really in the spirit of BC is it? p.s. I avoid any of his threads about the Beatles
 12. Love putting ideas together, trying new songs, rehearsing, but yes, nothing beats the gig!
 13. Ok, I know you've all been waiting for the price drop so here it is. Now down to £300 inc case collected or £320 posted. Partial trades (with money to me) also considered. Seafoam Green US parts built bass - Mighty Mite Body, Fender Licensed neck, Kent Armstrong pick up and WD hardware. Bought this as I always fancied a Seafoam Green bass, and for the fun of putting it together, but now have a new project that needs money spent on it, so this has to make way. Neck is oiled and feels lovely. Pictures show the first attempt to position the bridge was off by 2.5mm, and the finish where the screws were removed cracked slightly, This has been hidden by the careful placing of an ashtray cover that adds to the vintage vibe. Decal has not been oiled or varnished, so will come off easily if you don't like the F3nd3r Recession Bass logo. Selling for [s]what[/s] less than the unmade kit cost me. [s]Sorry, not interested in any trades this time[/s]. Partial trades with cash coming my way considered. Some sound samples - tried to keep it really simple, just s few scales, and Audacity wouldn't let me playback so couldn't edit the mistakes out , All fingerstyle, some over the pickup, some by the neck and some by the bridge. Very lively bass! Will courier this but only in a hardcase for an extra £25.00 (Gator case that's never been out of the house). Pick up without the case welcome. Trade option - might be interested in a cheap project or interesting guitar or guitar amp but need cash my way please. 14. Amazing the prices they ask for the amount of damage - unlike Thomann with their Deko goods that apparently usually have just the most minor blemishes.
 15. I nearly did the opposite - I was tour managing and at the Brook in Southampton Phil Harding (Time Team) was in the audience and I really wanted to go up and talk to him.
 16. Losing our guitarist, so seeking a replacement. We are a female fronted soulful blues band, currently changing direction a bit (our first drummer has dropped out for now due to major health problems, have replaced him with someone much more full on in style), so are tweaking the repertoire to suit. Now the guitarist has just told me he wants to do something else, which is a major shame. We're not exactly run off our feet with gigs, but do have a really nice club gig in the diary for end of November, and have dates booked next year in two of the best blues pubs locally. Looking for someone with a broad interest, not just loads of 12 bars. We're all easy to get on with and based all over - Burgess Hill, Shoreham and Horsham, so somewhere within that slightly off triangle would be ideal.
 17. Tough one. I did stick with a band doing material outside of what I really wanted and grew to really love it (and now miss it), but yes, if your heart is set on something specific, and as your last band was so right, you've got to go for what you really want. Good luck in the quest.
 18.
2000, I took the family so see that gig. Midnight Train To Georgia is Bob Babbitt's tone at it's best.
I had "If I Were Your Woman" in mind, but on second listening it wasn't as great as I thought, but we are talking headphones and compressed, nasty uploads.
 19.
Was lucky to see the Funk Brothers playing at the Royal Festival Hall a (good) few years ago. What an amazing band and, while, Bob Babbitt probably gets overshadowed by the Jamerson legend a bit what an amazing player.
Lucky man! I was going to use some of his work with Gladys Knight as an example, but on those recordings it was his lines and style, not the tone that stood out.
 20.
This is the best bass tone I've ever heard although this is live, actual song starts about 1m 30s in

A good bass tone (or not) is entirely dependant on the arrangement and overall sound of the track in question. Something that sounds awesome on one track would be hideously inappropriate on another.
True - in fact, despite the examples I posted, to me, the bass tone on those early stranglers recordings were absolutely perfect and helped define that musical style.
 21.
I always assumed that was Jamerson. Either way it is one of those lines that gets better each time I listen to it, and each time I try to play it I realise just how subtle and nuanced it is
Definitely Babbitt (and sorry, missed the extra t in the original post). Yes, very cool line as well as fabulous tone. http://www.bobbabbitt.com/disc.htm
 22.
Dion and the Belmonts. "Teenager in Love". The person who recorded that double bass is a god. It sits there in the stereo mix and just growls at you. You can smell the varnish. "Katmandu" - Cat Stevens (from Mona Bone Jakon). Another double bass, but this one is MASSIVE. Careful, coz this track starts off quietly (so quietly that the tape hiss is very apparent) and then, wait for it.........a bull fiddle the size of a small planet! "From The Underworld" by the Herd. Recorded in the days when they mic'ed bass amps up. I love that phasey bass sound, all string and no body. Bet it played well on am radio.
Dion sounds like it is thumping out from a jukebox - just like those sorts of tracks should!
 23.
Me too, how about a bit of this...
Ooh, yes, good call. I'm going to find a way of using this sound in something one day!
 24. Love the tone of the bass on the Doobies track at the start, but then felt it was a bit overbearing as the track, and the bassline progressed. Great call on Roxy, and of course Pino on Paul Young is leaning on an open door. One tone I have always loved is a very distinct technique - flats, pick and mute.I'll never use it, but here's my favourite example: and then some wonderful fingerstyle from Bob Babbitt:
 25.
Sorry to hijack the thread, Mykesbass. I did my post on an impulse and only just realised what I did!
Hey, no worries at all. Grangur has been very helpful on my thread so nice to know he has picked up a bargain, and you've got your sale - win all round. That's how a community should operate.
