3. 78/79 made in Mexico? Now that is rare even by Ebay standards!!
4. Is it a way of carving some money out of the gross before the artist gets paid?
5. Loved this -was shown late night on Channel 4 in the mid 80s - classy bit of Elmer Bernstein: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4hddnMwcvmY
6. I've got two P type basses, one a fretless Jon Shuker 5 string with a Nordstrand pickup, amarelo fingerboard and flatwound strings. The other is a Mighty Mite kit with maple fretted board, a Kent Armstrong pickup, and nickel roundwounds. There is no way I can make either sound like the other, despite using the same fingers!
7. Anyone tried Lonnie Liston Smith's Expansions? Never dared give it a try - sounds terrifying.
8. I auditioned for one once but didn't make the final cut.
9. Hot Rod took over Wizzard's equipment and are making pickups in Chichester.
10. Just seen one of these in my local shop - a lot of bass for £400! http://www.cortguitars.com/au/product/b4-20th
11. Met him a couple of times through work (we put out a couple of live CDs and DVDs). Absolute gentleman, and yes, treated his musicians brilliantly. Had a meeting with him in the Park Lane Hilton prior to him playing the RAH, and he insisted on the whole band staying in the same hotel as him. Also went to the end of tour party in Zwickau and had an absolute riot with the horn players, with Last making sure everyone got very drunk! The other little thing he did that amazed me was that he allowed fans in to the soundcheck, and once the band was up and playing he'd leave them to it and come off stage to chat with them. What a pro!
12.
Winner, Bill. Claim your prize.
which is six months in the Tower of London
13.
Nope. Just listened to it again and (in my opinion) it's absolute pants. Not a single redeeming feature.... and deserves an entry into the 'crap lyrics' thread for the bit about needing a small vacation - but it sure looks like rain - and if it snows the line down south will never stand the strain. Turgid.
No redeeming feature? String arrangement (Morse code motif at the turnaround, and the sweeping lines at the end are both glorious. The songwriting, ok, you didn't like a line, but the scanning of "but I need you more than want you, & I want you for all time" is, IMO, near to songwriting perfection. But, of course, each to their own :-)
14. I have played a Dean 12 string, very easy to play, and quite a nice tone, with the upper octave pairs. Much as I thought I should hate it I didn't!
15.
Just queued up versions by Freddie King (3), Sam Cooke, Bobby Bland & Jimmy Witherspoon (2) & they all just cycle through the verse structure. Similar tunes that **do** have a bridge are 'Need Your Love So Bad' and 'Jumping at Shadows'
Just my imagination getting the better of me! We rehearsed it last night and put some extra chord changes in under the guitar solos, worked really nicely.
16.
There are so many versions of this around that is difficult to pick any of them as the definitive one. We've played it a few times, but not for a while. We tend to change things around in most songs we play, so added guitar and harp solos. Good song, must remind the band to play it again.
Yes, from Bessie Smith to Freddie King! Driving me nuts though as I can hear it going up to the IV for a bridge or middle 8 but can't find a version that does that. Oh well, in the best tradition of the song, perhaps we should put one in!
17. Anyone do this old Blues song? If so, is there a middle 8, or, after the intro does it just keep repeating? It's odd, I can hear one in my head but can't find a version with it in! Thanks, Mike
18. Loved this when she appeared on Later a couple of years back, but the original has a terrific Bob Babbit bass line: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U-Nc4MW4yr0 Here's the bass-less, but still very tasty Jools Holland Later version: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sHulRYtCdY8
19.
What are you doing playing all the way up there anyway?
This - even your bass is telling you!
20. Didn't JPJ use one of these ob the Thong Remains the Same?
