1. Lovely bit of Dylan: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FzNTYp-WAlU
 2.
Thanks all. Just out of interest is there much difference between the makes Chord and Cort ? I had a quick look at the Vintage Modified Jazz Bass online - a lovely looking instrument! I love that retro feel! Does the VM bass have a slimmer neck than the Ibanez range? Sorry for so many questions! Thanks again.
I only know the Chord brand through the guitars my local shop stocks and really wouldn't put them up against a Cort - Cort far superior (IMO). Back to the Squiers, I had a VMJ fretless, and bought it before trying it. I went through all the CV and VMJ range at the time to get a feel for them before ordering the fretless and found the CV's were much nicer than the VMJs (although no fretless). One of the best things about them is they re-sell quite quickly and hold their price reasonably well. I'd say Cort would be a better bass but are not as easy to sell on.
 3. Hi AB and welcome to the forum. Cort are excellent basses, and are actually the maker of many of the bigger brand names. Squier Affinity is the real entry level - better of looking for a CV model secondhand (check the classifieds on here). EB0 is short scale so may feel a little bit odd for someone of 6'4" Also don't forget the Yamaha RBX170 - their entry level bass, always top quality. Good luck in your search, Mike
 4. Agree with the comments on 80's recordings sounding very dated and also pick up on 4 Strings comments on classical recordings. It almost seems as though the desire to push technology on hampered the end result. I love the first two Dire Straits album and like all the rest of their work but never listen to Brothers in Arms any more purely because of the "modern" production. Going back even further, an album which would have probably been recorded in the same way as the classical ones 4 Strings likes is Frank Sinatra's Songs for Swinging Lovers - to me it sounds as fresh as anything else in my (oddly varied) collection.
 5.
I had a Rickenbacker 4003s8 - only sold it to help fund my custom Alembic. Fantastic bass, amazing sound, but good luck finding one; even if you do it'll cost you. One thing I did find was lighter strings worked far better.
Out of idle curiosity, which way around did they have the octave strings, as the 12 string guitar is famous for being the opposite way around from the conventional acoustic 12 string?
 6. Played a Dean Rhapsody 12 once - although I can't personally see the point of such a thing it was dead easy to play and very nicely built and balanced. Might be worth adding to your list.
 7.
A bit more challenging than Wizard, I'm guessing
Sorry, haven't got a copy of that!! Hope you gave the rest of the band hell though?!
 8.
Last night I've been learning the Al Jarreau version of Chick Corea's Spain. Jazzyvee
Ooh, tasty! Love that track, in fact, off to play it on vinyl NOW!!
 9.
Sorry, bumping an old thread, but thought I should bring attention to the GS bass that's popped up on Manchester Bass Lounge. Looks to be a sexy bit of kit: http://manchesterbas...nge.com/?p=4975
Amazing - I'd say that was a bargain for something the quality of a Gordon Smith!
 10. Are they an authorised repairer for the amp? If they did a dodgy fret dress I'd be very worried about them repairing a £1,000 amp and voiding the guarantee.
 11. You would probably need to play around with the pick up pole pieces to balance the volume (I broke a D string at a gig and even a fresh new roundwound against the older worn in ones was way too strong). Only real issue I can see is where do you want the rich mellow tone to stop and the brightness to take over (although you could change this by fret positions). Only one way to find out.....
 12.
Thanks for that. They really look like a bargain for the price. I'm wondering if they will be long enough as the 'speaking length' is 32 1/2 inches. I've measured the G string on two of my old Short Scales Basses (1960s VOX Clubman & Burns Sonic both with inline tuners) and from the bridge to the tuning peg it's 37 inches. Maybe i'll have to give them a call unless anyone has Status Short Scale Strings and knows the actual length.
Email or call them - not only bargains but excellent customer service as well.
 13.
It's music related, and very very very funny. £3.22 delivered ... http://www.amazon.co...+spinal+tap+dvd
Only one worth watching (IMHO of course)
 14.
This: http://basschat.co.u...01#entry2308001
+1 thanks!

 16.
Parkas are better than anoraks. Well, for metal anyway ...
Nah, they're for Mods not Rockers..... p.s Great original post.
 17.
I sat in on a recent folk night and listened to two bands. The first had an acoustic bass, amplified, and the second, a P-bass, amplified. To my ear, the first was much more sympathetic to the music being played: the P-bass just stood out as an odd sound. My personal experience of acoustic sessions is that they can be in pubs where there are very few power sockets, and landlords will not allow you to trail mains cables across the floor. I'm looking into building a battery-powered rig because of this. When I first started going to thse events, I started by asking the organiser if an acoustic bass could be amplified, and he asked the landlord. That way, everyone is in the loop. Hope this helps David

I've been involved in folk singing for decades and recently took up the bass. I use a uke bass with a Roland bass microcube - its loud enough to balence volumes with acoustic instruments in a pub session. I recently changed basses to a new design from Excelsior instruments which might be loud enough to not need an amp in the quieter sessions. I haven't had it long enough to use it out but it's significantly louder than a uBass. I can supply more info if your interested.
Thanks for these replies - I think I'll be making my search even harder then as new gear is out of the question for a while
 18. Have you tried fretting the strings at the third fret with the capo off?
 19. Not house, but one of the great dance music basslines
<iframe width="420" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/C3jBFhBhU3w" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C3jBFhBhU3w
 20. Looks great - a quick Google search shows he is local to us (put luthier in the search with his name otherwise all you get is an Australian MP)! Made a guitar for Uli Jon Roth so must have some idea about what he is doing! Looks like he no longer makes guitars/basses though.
 21. Mickeyboro on here has the best tribute band tale I know - let's hope he'll be along soon......
 22. I just about qualify here as I owned one as part of my shop inventory when I had one for a couple of years (shop, not bass). It is an absolute cracker - beautifully made, neck was lovely, very nice to play. Never got to hear it being gigged, but the tone unplugged and plugged in was great - the lipstick pickup somehow managed to keep the resonator vibe. It was also a major talking point - everyone will be asking you about it at gigs! Apart from heavy and loud the other bit that everyone will tell you - they're a nightmare to keep clean! Finally, I thought they used to be brass bodies, I see they are now as you say, steel, so the current ones may well be a bit lighter.
 23.
I also get less tolerant of intolerance as I get older....
Great quote - think I may nick that (if you'll tolerate such behaviour)!
 24.
Thankfully there's a rich tradition up here of folk with electric bass. And songs. And dynamics. And middle eights. We're almost unique. :-)
Stop it - every time I go to your neck of the wood I end up wanting to move up there! Don't think the wife & kids would be too keen
