1. Thought I'd flag this up - interesting 50 Years of VP Records Sampler free to download on Amazon, unfortunately, unlike previous Amazon giveaways, it is only shortened sample tracks : http://www.amazon.co...WAU/ref=lh_ni_t p.s. I have no connection to this deal, just spotted it this morning and felt it was worth sharing.
2.
I think Phil would us one of these as his first choice gigging amp based on what he was saying to me recently. Pretty impressive given he's had a lot of choice of much more expensive kit!
Yes, he was telling me that he was using this more and more over the Aguilar Tonehammer. Looking forwrad to rehearsing tonight (and getting up the stairs ).
3. Picked up a Carvin BX500 from Phil at BassGear in Twyford yeasterday. Had tried it previously with several thousand pounds worth of his stock basses but wanted to double check it with my own bass. What a great amp - does the sound that I have been carting 25kg of valves around for the last year or so to get in a tiny little class D box with a 12AX7 pre amp valve - big, warm, deep bass but full of clarity and definition. The amp has loads of bells and whistles should you need them but also works brilliantly with just the basic tone controls. Perhaps the biggest surprise is that it only cost £359 for a US built 500 watt amp. Highly recommended as of course is Phil and Vic's service if you haven't already experienced it!
4. Just sold my Peavey valve rig (power amp, pre amp and rack case) to Grahame - really easy deal, Grahame arranged collection, great to deal with, highly recommended.
5.
Might help your health to stop worrying on the details (he said this did that etc) as they just go around in your head forever, and just decide what you want as an outcome Can he can change if asked ? No I'd guess Can you work with him ? No I'd guess Do the rest of the band like him/want him ? If not then encourage them to act for the right reasons If they do, state your case, even plead if you love the project, but if no success save your yourself the trouble and find a new band
Excellent post Lojo. Also, a conversation with the drummer rather than a text or email may well be a better option. Good luck, hope it works out for you.
6.
At the moment, because of the exchange rate, it was lots cheaper from Thomann. I have just purchased a Martin from the local shop so they are happy with me. :-)
But after the repair charge, probably getting close to the £765 that is being asked for by a lot of UK retailers. Trouble will be in a few more years, when everyone is buying online from the cheapest supplier and there will be no local shops left to do the repair. p.s. glad to see you do support yours, there are lots of people that are driven by price alone.
7. Could the local music shop not have supplied it in the first place?
8.
I love playing my fretless bass. It just feels more natural to me. I suppose its because I started off playing a double bass a long time ago. "Home" is playing an unlined, fret free neck. Who needs 'em? Well that would be me when I see a P bass that catches my eye! Enjoy.
Pretty sure that's where I get it from as well - started learning double bass at the age of 13, 27 years later got back into bassw playing and now exclusively play 5 string fretless. Does everything I want it to.
9. A certain not so well known Texan wiping the floor with Mr Clapton - OK, so he's a friend of mine and I'm biased but Buddy Whittington is up there with the all time greats:
10.
Is shipping an option?
Can't see why not, will check out options at work - have PM'd you. Cheers, Mike
11. NOW SOLD http://s1137.photobu...s/Peavey%20Rig/ Unfortunately, due to the onset of arthritis making it really difficult for me to lift and carry I need to change my Peavey Classic 120w valve power amp/Peavey TG Raxx valve pre-amp racked rig for something much lighter. It is not a stupidly heavy set up, just too much for my dodgy hands. OK, the TG Raxx is officially a guitar pre amp. I queried this when I bought it from stevebasshead on here and having asked around, everyone seems to agree that the G Raxx and B Raxx were one and the same just labelled differently. Having been gigging it for a year now I can categorically say that it is a great bass pre-amp. SImple to use yet loads of room for adjustment. plent of really nice well defined bottom end. I've used it for full bandf gigs in big rooms (300 ish) to small acoustic gigs and have found great, suitable tones for all. The 120 watt power amp has delivered everything I have needed for pubs and small clubs. I absolutely love this set up and genuinely wouldn't be getting rid of it if it wasn't for the problems I'm having with my hands. It is not crazy heavy, even with both units racked in the Citronic 6u rack. The Citronic isn't the best rack on the market, does rattle a little but only noticeable in quieter moments. The front and back fittings could match up a little better but it does th ejob of securely holding the whole lot together. No idea when either were re-valved, power amp was from Beedster and he didn't know either, but has all been behaving very well, no sign of impending failure. Looking for somewhere in the region of £300 for the whole rig, will consider seperating if offers for all individula parts come in simultaneously. Cheers, Mike
12. Not the purest of Reggae but how about some of the Sly & Robbie Grace Jones material - Private Lives, My Jamaican Guy etc?
13. Great to hear Wunjo are expanding - raved about them a few times on here. They seem pretty straight and done a couple of good commission deals and one straight sale with them.
14. Not just musicians having to work for nothing - internships, work placements, "volunteer" border agency staff.... I work for an education charity and we rely on volunteers, mainly from the world of engineering to help at our events - they all really enjoy it and help out regularly, so I guess if the circumstances are right, playing for nothing could be OK.
15. Picked up the new copy because of this thread and also because I know of Joel's work from my previous life at a record company. Much improved, and great to see Michael McKeegan in there - great player and really nice person to boot. Nice to see some negative comments in reviews and a good spread of articles. One criticism Joel, could you set the cliche monitor to a slighly higher setting please!
16. Sorry, two drummers lost? You haven't even started yet!! We do a (semi) un-plugged four piece for a couple of pubs that don't want a full band, goes down really well.
17. I couldn't get insured for years by some o fthe main companies as I worked in a record company. Ended up with Privilige, which although a sister company of Direct Line will do the higher risk insurance (and charge you for it)! Many of the major players do specifically nclude anyone working in ANY part of the music industry, so again, I think honesty is painful but the only way.
18. Check out Yardbirds in Grimsby - amazingly friendly Biker's Bar with dormitory accomodation.
19. OK, I'm de-cluttering, and whilst I do like jazz and am keeping a lot of it, I have a load of stuff collected for previous job. Some were for mastering compilations so only been played in a mastering studio. A lot of the cases are a bit tatty but all discs should be pretty perfect. Old - Basie/Ellington back to the 20's New - John Schofield, Martin Taylor, Steve Coleman Lots of Concord, Fantasy/OJC, some Blue Note, some RCA Victor. I have a full list - mail me: [email protected] For sake of BC rules, looking for £1.50 a disc, + £1.00 for each extra in a box set (i.e. £3.50 for a three CD set) and would really like to knock out in 5's or so, plus postage. Anyone want to make a lowball for the lot please do! Cheers, Mike
20. Mackie Thump 12" - light as a feather, really nice sound and we use them as FOH for our acoustic(ish) gigs.
21.
Great little clip from VW, I did like that. I must be odd though because I thought that 'wrong' note sounded interesting from the start Perhaps that says something about my own playing.
No, you're just a Jazz fan
22. If it wasn't for a 5.30 start the next morning I'd be there - probably the Basschat band I want to see most - catch you next time!
