OK, it seems I can search the database for the album. However, my PRS membership has expired as it was so long ago and I have to pay £30 to sign up to be able to search for it ... Bugger
PM'd

Most hateful song on your covers bands set list?
Mykesbass replied to Dave Tipping's topic in General Discussion
Current band I'm really lucky and don't have one but from last band, "Summer of 69" is the one I never want to do again. -
Another OBBM fan here - just checked online and the first site I found - Studiospares charges £1.77 per metre for Klotz cable - 3p a metre less than OBBM and the only obvious matching Neutrik connector was the silent right angle which they were charging £8.66 for compared to OBBM's £10.50. This to me makes Dave's prices (combined with exceptional service) even better value for money than I had previously thought.

Wow, surely should be posted in Funk & Groove! Anyone know where I can get a drummer like that one?

Pair of Samick made Epiphone Humbuckers from an Emperor Joe Pass. Guitar they are from is 1995 model, and pickups are marked with SAM on reverse. The covers were gold but they tarnished really quickly, and I eventually replaced them along with the rest of the hardware with chrome replacements. £15 for the pair plus £2 postage http://s1137.photobu...!cpZZ1QQtppZZ20

So you have to use a Thunderbird or you dont get the job
Mykesbass replied to grimbeaver's topic in General Discussion
Been racking my brain as to where I knew of this band - just worked it out, I used to work with a couple of them in a record promotions/telesales company in the 80's after the band folded. Pretty sure it was Andy who was one of the reps, and it looks like the other guy isn't with them anymore - Knocker. The company was Impulse/Prime-Time. Hope it goes well for all of you - it was a long time ago but I remember them as really nice guys. Just seen on the website, Keith Knowles is mentioned as a founder member - that was Knocker, also seem to remember someone with the nickname of Moss - from a TV appearance when he wore Moss Bross emblazoned braces. He later appeared on TOTP with Gary Numan. -
I'm sitting on the fence - the traditionalist part of me wants to say Fender but the only bass I've ever seen that stopped me in my tracks was a fretless five string Fodera that was in the Gallery some 18 months ago.

Sold some strings to Tony - fast payment, good communication. Thanks Tony!
According to wikipedia, Chuck Rainey is 71 years old. While I fully appreciate he may have medical bills to pay, this loss of income story sounds like proverbial male cow poo.

I didn't say CR's loss of income was BS I'm sure that's true. He's a pensioner in ill health and I've no doubt he's suffered an income loss.
Sorry Largo, am I missing something here, you've come pretty close to saying exactly that?
....and you base that on what, exactly?
C'mon Chris, you should know by now, all legendary bass players have final salary pension schemes!! Let's hope some of the big names that he has been of such great service to in the past can help out.

Just sold some custom gauge strings to Ryan - great guy to deal with. Cheers, Mike

And there I was hoping this thread was going to be about judging drummers on their choice of hat, their ability to throw some funky shapes without smacking the singer with their headstock, or even the colour of their silk gloves
Just because it further down list still means its on the list though.
Yes, but we all probably are as we drive, consume, earn etc.

Is it really ethical for your luthier friend to copy the design of one of these name luthiers and offer a knock-down priced version? Why not go the whole hog and see what Trade Tang can provide? As has been said here already, luthiers (even the highest paid ones) are way, way down the pecking order of un-ethical business people. I really doubt that even Fodera with their $500 scratchplate are making huge percentages as their overall net profit.

Slightly off topic but to get the ball rolling, I refereed an Under 13's rugby match under the watchful eye of Dean Richards whose son was playing. Don't think I've had anyone in a music setting though.
Why would pitch effects work on guitar not bass? (thinking of chorus specifically).
I'm sure someone on here can do a better explanation than this, but I was taught (many years ago, during O Level music) that when you build a chord up you have larger intervals the lower down you go - i.e. Octave between first two notes, then root, fifth root, third, fifth, root and then put your 6's 7ths etc up the top end. Therefore, any pitch effects lower down can be a bit disturbing. Having said that, chorus is probably one of the more popular bass effects and can sound great when there is the sonic space for it.

A few words on the subject of professionalism
Mykesbass replied to Dom in Dorset's topic in General Discussion
As a designer myself, it's easy to overlook very simple things - we are human after all, no matter what some designers may tell you The problem is not really spelling, but errors of grammar most of the time. Simple variations on words, so US versus UK spelling etc. No matter how many times I use a spellchecker when setting up artwork, if the client misses basic grammar and simple typos before signing it off, especially if it's been provided on their own copy, it's their responsibility and not mine. Clients seem to be under the illusion that they somehow absolve themselves from responsibility when they get proofs. They give it a simple glance over and say yes, that's fine. It's only when they get the copy back having spent hundreds of pounds on printing costs do they see the mistake, and then it's the 'designers' fault and not theirs! This is particularly problematic when setting up menu's or other lengthy documents in other languages, all with variants... so Indian takeaway menus are a nightmare. I guarantee that there will be at least one or two mistakes when doing these. I hate doing menus
A designer friend of mine ALWAYS puts a deliberate (and fairly obvious) mistake in every proof he does to make sure it has been read! Amazing how often it doesn't get picked up and he has to point it out! -
Perhaps that should be directed at the person who actually typed out the quote and not Henry Rollins himself.
What?! He doesn't do his own typing??!! I once had an argument with someone who had made a spelling mistake in a poster - like this one all in capitals. He said there wasn't a mistake as the spellcheck didn't highlight it -
As Duke Ellington said, there are only two types of music, good and bad. I try to play the former

What is it with guitarists and 12inch drivers and 4x12 cabs?
Mykesbass replied to Marvin's topic in Guitar Amplifiers
I once read an interview with Allan Holdsworth who claimed he could tell the difference in sound between and angled and a straight Marshall 4 x 12. I bet he's a riot to go for a pint with !!
-
You need to start trawling the for sale secton - sure there's a lot of expensive gear on there but at the moment, for example, Psychocandy has a 4x10 Laney combo up for £165 leaving you plenty from your budget for a decent s/h bass on here.

So what is a Jazz bass and what is the best example?
Mykesbass replied to Linus27's topic in Bass Guitars
Trouble is, even different versions of the Fender Jazz differ quite substantially, so you need to narrow down your benchmark, as a modern Standard US Fender is probably quite different in sound (it certainly is in spec) to a 62 re-issue. Therefore, it is quite possible that a high end copy sounds more like an old Jazz than the modern Fender.
