Completely bonkers, but then I love a touch of eccentricity! Don't know how much use this will be, but a few years back I saw The Pretenders at a smallish gig in Kings Cross. Adam Seymour produced, to my ears, an exceptional 12 string guitar sound, but having just looked at his rig there was no chorus, just vibrato and reverb. http://vintage.guitargeek.com/rigview/332/ Obviously going to be very different for bass but food for thought none the less. If you do get it up and running, remember from a previous thread, I have a local shop with a reasonably priced copy of Neilsen's guitar!!

OK, first caveat - I am not, never have been, bever will be a teacher - this is purely how it worked for me - I started off with 5 string concentrating on the fifth position and working on simple stuff like walking bass lines until comfortable effectively transposing stuff. From there I found it fairly straight forward moving down the neck, although I must admit, using open position did take a while longer. This may stem from the fact that I am not very happy playing in the open position in the first place having spent many years as a rhythm guitarist in a Big Band so playing a lot in Bb, Ab and Eb.

[/quote] Agree with this - I had to replace a D string on a gig once - the difference in tone and volume from the new string was so huge and so off putting I changed the rest of the strings in the break.

I had a customer bring in a Les Paul that had been in his loft (no he wasn't an Ebayer ) for over 20 years. Was the first time in all those years that the case had been opened - one of those big old ugly 80's Gibson plastic jobs. The guitar was immaculate and ebven the strings were fresh. Also, I'm pretty sure it is sudden temperature changes that do the real damage.

IMO it doesn't have to be one of the well known guys doing the job - I know an excellent luthier in East Anglia - he's on the reccomended list here - who would do an exceptional job. Don't think it would be cheaper but certainly a bit quicker (and possibly nearer). PM me if you want contact details. Mike

What chutzpa - £3,000 for an original work of art by an artist that doesn't come up on a google search! Filed down machine heads on a £999 bass instead of a new set and out of date condoms. And by the looks of teh feedback the more expensive items don't sell!

Nice "Imagine" documentary on BBC1 last night, based on the making of Bridge Over Troubled Water and the 1969 tour. Decent amount of interview time with Joe Osborn, but most interesting was some of the background information on the production techniques. Well worth catching on the IPlayer.

From someone who usually (quietly) sits in the anti-bass solo camp, that was lovely! Very melodic, very original. Great stuff - I may well be a convert
