If you sit down for dinner, you'll need to wear a jacket and tie... but since you will not, you go straight to the smart side of being in the club house. You took the gig..sounds reasonable to abide by private members rules, in this case. Definition of jeans is denin..although trousers with poppers and stitch-on pockets should come into this..most don't hold this up. The members are their partners will dress up, so so should you. That is the way it is...
Not too worried about having to do so, and yes, as a band we have just been told no jeans, trainers or t-shirts, it was the no socks think that struck me as totally pompous and archaic Club Captain - didn't know golf (outside Ryder Cup) was a team game
2. On a commercial level, shouldn't you be looking at a guitar version (or is there already such a thing)? More of them (and more likely to not have theknowledge)!
3.
Welcome to the snotty end of Bexhill I'm sure they'd love it if you all turn up in mankinis.
Funnily enough it was your avatar that has led me to thinking about the tux! Think I'll give the pipe a miss though
4. Looking forward to the Peavey - cheers Steve, sorry Chris!
5. This is our Saturday gig - playing the rockier side of Dylan, Neil Young, Creedence and some Stones and they tell us this : http://www.coodenbeachgc.com/visitors/dress_code Think I'll dig out the old black tie and tuxedo - should still fit
6.
Or do their mixing in the back of a Saxo...
There was a studio in Brighton that checked mixes in a car in the garage. Was an old Roller so that may have slightly defeated the object of the exercise!
7. Interesting to see this as a former shop owner. There was a recent thread on here where several BC'ers stated they would not buy an instrument (at least not without it being sold cheaply as ex-demo) if it had been hanging up in a shop and the shop had the temerity to allow other people to play it. Yes, sounds like you had a bad experience, I was like Pete and always let people try stuff, but it seems either way the shop can't win!
8. I use and like them as they give an extra bit of grunt which I was missing with flats and they don't chew up your fingers like roundwounds. They have started to mark my ebony board after 6 months or so but only surface scratches.
9.
What about a Godin A4?
Ooops, just seen their current prices!!!!!!!!!!!!
10.
My Ray5 must weigh a fair bit (over 10lbs easy) but it's not uncomfortable even after a couple of hours, it sits nicely
Said it before, I personally think that a lot is in the balance. My old Aria cut into my shoulder so badly that I sold it for a pathetic amount on Ebay. Its replacement Cort is exactly the same weight according to the bathroom scales and yet I can gig it for a couple of hours with no problems at all.
11. Gigging last night was a bit of a squeeze and ended up setting up with the keys directly behind me. Very little room so he put his amp (a small but very pokey Alesis) on top of my Peavey Classic 120 valve power amp (clear of the vents). Half way through the first set, the Peavey coughed and spluttered to a halt. Thought a valve had gone but plugged it all in this afternoon, and ok, nowhere near gig volume, but ran the amp for over an hour with no problem at all. Could the other amp have caused mine to pack up - vibrations, magnetic fields etc? Thanks, Mike
12. Yep, sure there would be a big market for all those lovely old colours but perhaps this may reduce their custom shop sales.
13. Bit off calling it the Smiths Bass Rig when it also states he's owned it for 10 years or so
14. Love the extra clip on the guitar case - so true!
15.
May I ask, what are the advantages of having a custom build?
For me it is quite simply that Fender don't make a five string fretless Tele Bass (and if they did it would probably be an awful lot more expensive and probably not as nice as the one Mr Shuker is making for me)
16. Don't know what your idea of reasonable is, but I'd agree with OBBM, look around in the UK first, as once you add in freight and taxes you will be looking at a significant bump in price. I've just ordered from Jon Shuker, and thought his price was great.
17. Got to gig this for the first time last night and really loved the sound. Hard to describe, but I got a very bassy tone, far more so than I would have attempted with previous amps as the definition wouldn't have been there. This set up was exceptionally articulate, plenty of punch and provided a much fuller bottom end to the band without increasing the volume levels. Very pleased to have made the conversion to valves and pleased to say this is not a heavy option either!

Two Bob Band

Get to try out the new rig - Peavey 120 watt all valve power amp and Digitech BP8 valve pre-amp. Sounds great at home but the acid test tomorrow night. Fingers crossed!
19. Slightly OT but it is amazing how much difference individuals can make to the set up and break down. I was working as manager/tour manager for a fairly well. known Texan blues guitarist/singer and we had the breakdown down to a fine art on the first tour - 15 minutes and we were all down at the merch stall selling CD's. Next tour, different drummer who liked to "wind down" straight after the gig, all of a sudden we were up to 11/2 hours. Had a chat and agreed the wind down would be after all the gear was in the van and evrything wernt smoothly from there on. Talk to the guys, tell them it is part of the job and don't let it happen again!
20.
Sounds interesting especially the fretless Tulipwood idea, I'm thinking of going down the fretless maple route again myself at some point.
Beedster's maple with a very nice gloss finish looks great but Jon recommended the tulipwood and I'm not going to argue with him!! I'm sure there's a thread with Beedster's board on here somewhere.
21. So, a combination of being in a band requiring a more retro feel/sound/look than my lovely Cort GB75, seeing one of Howard Bass Doc's old Tele Basses up for sale and Beedster's maple fretless board, along with the very unexpected money my mum left me recently, I've been in touch with Jon and today placed the order for this: (Jon's idea for the tulipwood - he says he will find a piece that looks just like maple but is much denser/harder wearing) Custom T bass 5 string 34" scale maple neck tulipwood unlined fretless board two way truss rod carbon fibre reinforcement 45mm nut width 20.5mm depth at 1st fret 22.5mm at 12th 17.5mm string spacing black side dots satin neck lacquer bone nut Hipshot tuners swamp ash body polyester basecoat Old Butterscotch translucent finish rear contour 5 string P pickup. tele bass control plate. black pickguard Thanks mum
22. Just added my vote to what turned out to be the most popular. You can buy excellent gigging/recording basses from Ibanez, Cort, Aria,Tanglewood etc, within that price bracket - it's just that we don't choose to
23. Might get quicker results looking for Ray Charles What'd I Say - I know Jerry Lee was the original but Ray's version seems to offer more results.
24. You listed most of the gear you're using but didn't say which cables!!!! Great news and will look out in the gig section if you ever venture towards the Sussex border.
