A lot of them - even some of the best ones that I've worked with - seem to be obsessed with volume and sub-bass... (a bass player's nightmare, IMO).
Not a young guy at the Cluny by any chance?
2. They emailed me their price list - PM me if you want a copy.
3.
I think it depends on what's done. In the bad old days, I've paid for setups where they've basically tweaked the truss rod, and that was about it. However, a pro-setup involves a lot more than that. This is what Peter Allen does. He charges £78, but it's worth every penny. I think you can get regular setups for around the £35 mark.
That is very good value for a very thorough set up.
4.
Yeah I got the bass this last Xmas so the strings are new. I never really thought about the fact that the G string especially gets less action as it were than the others maybe I will play a few top end tunes for a while.
If you got the bass this Christmas and the strings are new then you're not playing enough
5.
I am genuinely happy for you. I think that there is nothing nicer than playing an instrument that gives you that kind of return. I guess I am lucky in that I find that in my 'off the shelf' set up. I guess its like trying to find your glasses and then realising they were on your head all the time
Can one really call Wal "off the shelf"? Nige, funny what you say about the roto's - I found the Status Hotwires were the stickiest little blighters I've ever experienced - to the point of it being difficult to play certain lines.
6.
What are they mate?
Rotosound Pressure Wounds - just add the right amount of umph to the fretless without completely losing all the qualities of flats. (sorry, lame description, one of those you know it when it happens moments)! That's a cracking looking Jazz BTW, glad it sounds as good as it looks
7. I've just had the same eureka moment - and all it took was a different set of strings!
8. So, got my Cort neck back and put Status half rounds on - beautiful tone but not what I was after - far too mellow and flat, was looking for something more of a halfway house between flats and rounds, these are far too close to the flat end o fthe spectrum. On a whim, popped in to my local shop and got a set of Rotosound pressure wound strings. Just back from a rehearsal and I'm so happy, I know have the sound I've been looking for and no longer feel the need to change my amp (Hartke HA2500) which I bought in an emergency and was (until now) very disappointed with. Quite amazing what a set of strings can do!
9. I'm becoming quickly enlightened here - thanks Mr Foxen. Reason I'm yearning after a valve amp is that I got badly stung with a class D Yamaha that no-one can fix! Looks like the same could occur with the modern valve amps. Also, is there a problem, like with gaming consoles, of the new "safe" solder not being up to the job? Finally, any suggestions on what to look out for amp wise for old school Neil Young/Dylan/Creedence sound? I liked the idea of the new Traynor both because it is a great price and because from Harmony Central and other reports it sounded like the right sort of clean but warm sounding amp for me. (Not a near future purchase BTW).
10.
I was tempted but the fact that it hadnt been tested since it last blew a tube put me off
Exactly! I just don't get that everything becomes "vintage" these days. To me it's and old amp that doesn't work when the brand new one is only half as much again with a year guarantee. (Sorry Mr F, perhaps I just haven't got a soul)!

12. I was managing a Texan blues guitarist, Buddy Whittington (ex John Mayall) and he went down a storm there. Really friendly crowd, and yes, the sound guy was great. Well worth doing.
13.
Proud Mary Dum De Dum De Dum De Dum De Dum De Dum ZZzzz !
My band does a hybrid of the CCR version and Tina Turner's version - loads more energy and easier to develop a driving bass riff to suit. Goes down a treat when we do it.
14.
"songs you didn't know you knew"
That's a great angle Jon. Band I've just joined does Dylan, Springsteen, Neil Young, only a handful of really obvious choices. We have a fair amount of bookings throughout the year, only reason we haven't got more is the bass player I replaces had too many other commitments and was always turning gigs down, so yes, it can be done. Mike
15. Am I being harsh here - £400 for an amp that blew a valve a couple of years ago and hasn't been used since, when a brand new one from Thomann is around £650 sounds a bit steep (or is there a collectors market for 70's Traynor)? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Traynor-YBA-3-Custom...=item2eb345455a
16. It's a very long time since I was involved in putting out 45's but yes, a cut can affect the sound of a recording quite significantly. Certainly two tracks per side on a 7" is going to make the grooves closer together and lower quality (unless they're really short). Best thing to do is make sure your master sounds exactly how you want it then make sure you get an attended cut so you're in the room when the guy does it so it stays the way you want it.
17. Just bought a Purple Chili cab from Phil at Bass Gear - what a great guy to do business with! (and a great deal to boot)! Thanks Phil! Mike
18. Seen what I'm after so price adjustment bump. Also selling Kork DTR2 Tuner for £60 - would be willing to do a deal if someone wants both. Cheers, Mike
19. Not used this since I changed amp - can't rack mount anymore, so up for sale £60. Will post or courier at buyer's expense. With original, now fairly tatty box.
20. Verdine White is on the list.
21.
But the thing is if i spent all this time just playing bass i would be twice as good as i am now.
But is this the sole reason for doing the degree course?
22. Bought in either July or August last year, decided I like playing fretless so much that I had a new fretless ebony board put on my Cort GB75 (as I'm not comfortable playing 4 string). This has been gigged a couple of times and rehearsed with a fair bit but not in nasty rehearsal rooms, mainly in other band members houses, and has been taken care of. Original strings back on - I had been using flats but they were off the five string and are back on that now, and I have replaced the strap buttons with Schaller Strap Loks (have the bits for the strap as well). [s]No case or bag but I have boxes and am willing to post (£15).[/s] Last couple to go on here went very, very quickly so were probably undervalued, and they've also shot up in price (£273 now from all the usual suspects), and for once I'm not in need of an urgent sale - funds will be going towards a new amp but that's a way off, so looking for [s]£200[/s] o.n.o. Also looking for a 1x12" or 2x12" cab so would consider trades with money going either way. Just seen the cab I want so now £200 posted in RokSak gig bag or £190 posted without. Mike
23. But have either of them played a gig with the drummer in the gold lame suit? (sorry, can't find the accent for the e).
