Aged chrome / nickel (25 years on etc) just looks the business IMO.
Yep, gold hardware ages sooooo quickly, and to be base (not bass) we are talking collar and cuffs here
 3.
There was a period where Matamp used chipboard in cabs, but it was more recent than that cab, I think.
This was from Mel at Amps n Bits in Worthing - I also had Paul Goodhand Tait who I vaguely know through a friend look at it and he was sure it was just a cheapie: "The cab looks like a late 70's CustomSound, FAL or SAI cab or similar to me? But I would go for Customsound in which case The Grill cloth and metal corners are probably original. I can see from the pictures that, It's made out of Chipboard/Particle Board with a Ply baffle. I would say 101% Not an early Mat Mathias cab. I would also say that the Goodmans speakers are not original to the cab also the white speaker cable is not original. I would say that the cab almost certainly, originally had a Pair of Fane's in with Black and Red speaker cable, having taken a look at your pictures again I would put money on it that the cab is a late 70's Customsound cab." Still, it looks good, and at the moment, sounds good so for £20 I'm happy!
 4. I posted pictures of this cab a short while ago to see if I could get it identified. Despite a little bit of excitement when it was suggested it may have been an old Matamp I had it on fairly good authority from two vintage amp dealers that it wasn't - mainly due to a lot of chipboard in the construction. So, now knowing it wasn't particularly valuable, I stripped out the old Goodmans Audiom speakers - sold those back on Ebay so am already in profit! Put new handles and a speakon input on and wired in a Peavey Black Widow and an Eminence Basslite speaker. I have ordered a port but it hasn't turned up. Now having read a lot of the science that goes into cab making I'm not expecting much, but it has cost me next to nothing to do, the bits will always come in handy if it doesn't work, but if it does, I'll have a nice retro looking cab to match my own roadworn look (not quite a relic yet) and my new retro band. So far, it sounded great in the kitchen - very full and warm, but the big test will be on Saturday where I'll try it out BEFORE my gig starts.
I'm sure they must do - isn't that 'Cash Convertors' place that seems to have appeared in most major towns a pawn shop?
Yes, they are, but unfortunately, a lot of the time they tend to know how much things are worth so you don't really get too many bargains from them anymore. Having said that, I picked up a lovely Japanese Strat in the Ipswich branch a few years back for £180 - sold it in my shop a few hundred yards away later that week for £399. They also have (or had) a dedicated music outlet in Norwich.
 6. New you could get either a Cort Action or one of the Aria IGB series - both good but look on here for best value second hand basses.
 7.
Oh btw, whenever you look at his listings check to see if he has any recent neg feedback and what his replies are. He doesn't take kindly to complaints! In my head i've always imagined he looks like this:
Yep, 5,999 euro piano deal gone bad and he's called the attorney! He may also fancy the caps lock key that's floating around on here if TIM's finished with it.
 8.
Oh, they've got that problem sorted already: look under "Essential Accessories" and you'll find such delights as this: http://www.russandrews.com/category.asp?lo...linncdsScottish
Oops, Barb Jungr - I know one of the double bassists on some of her albums
 9. One of teh TC Helicon range certainly does vocals on there own - a vocalist I worked with had one - they sound amazing but just make sure she works all the parts out away from the rehearsal studio
 10. Thanks, hadn't spotted that.
 11. Even if all this gear does what it says, what are you going to listen to on it? There are, after all, only so many direct metal mastered, virgin vinyl Alan Parsons Project albums out there
 12. Used to stock ESP - they are great instruments and at that price or secondhand, a bargain!
 13.
The listing also breaches eBay's terms and conditions.
Out of genuine interest and not trying to start a scrap, how?
 14. Well according to Rosetti's website, there isn't an authorised Ric dealer in Gloucestershire.
 15. No, it is a mixture of science and religion! "Pythagoras was the first documented scholar to establish the notion of musical ratios, believing that music could be represented as pure mathematical ratios, which he believed were the ratios of the cosmos. The Renaissance recycled his ideas, where architects, artists, and craftsmen used these musical ratios in the built environment because they believed that, as twentieth century architecture historian Rudolf Wittkower maintains, “as man is the image of God and the proportions of his body are produced by divine will, so the proportions in architecture have to embrace and express the cosmic order, citing ideas of Pythagoras and Plato's mathematical cosmos”.
 16. Just a thought, there may well be a good few of those that go on and become active members. I certainly came on the site in the first instance to look at off-loading some gear. I did however then play by the rules by introducing myself and making some posts first. I now really like the place. Be careful not to lose more potential members.
 17.
Did he also play on Dusty Springfield's "Take a Little Piece of my Heart"? That's an incredible line.
Probably not as the album that came from was recorded in the UK. He has a pretty impressive CV though: http://www.allmusic.com/artist/tommy-cogbill-p65382/credits
 18. For me it would be completely pointless.......and yet I still want one
 19. QUOTE (Mykesbass @ Jan 11 2011, 03:48 PM) * Son of a Preacher Man - Tommy Cogbill/Dusty Springfield
Cracking bassline - I played it for a charity gig I was involved in a couple of years ago. Brilliant line, which is a lot harder to play (well!) than you first think.
Not harder than I first thought - it terrifies me

 21. Another satified cable customer - thanks Dave. Mike
 22.
He's a relic of the 90's, how strange that he doesn't just retire!
Wow, that's just made me feel VERY old
 23. The website lists Wood & Tronics as a user, may be worth asking Mark at Bass Direct about them - he's been getting some glowing praise for customer service on here.
 24.
Well yes and no. If a 12 year old asks for an electric guitar for Christmas, the parents are going to look for the cheapest thing, and they will go to a shop and expect to be shown the merchandise, given expert advice and still get the lowest price. It is ultimately up to the retailer whether they will price match anyone. They don't have to, and personally I think that the ones that offer personalised service and aftersales care are in the win for perceived value. No one is able to undercut the competition by 20% on brand new items (excluding demos and clearance stock.) More generally the variation in price between retailers is in the order of less than 5% which is really marginal. When you factor in shipping the hassle of returns, the shop doesn't seem such bad value. One last thing: I own a lot of guitars and several basses. That's a lot of strings, but since I don't play them all at once I don't change them often so I tend to buy 10-12 packs of guitar strings at a time and 4-5 packs of bass strings, maybe once every 15 months. I would very very very happily buy these at full price at any of my local stores if only so my money goes to them and not online retailers. Guess what? No one stocks Ernie Ball Blue Steels 11-54 or Warwick Black Label 45-135 sets within driving distance from Bristol. I'm not however prepared to go to the store once to place an order and pay a deposit, then come back again at some undetermined date in the future to collect them and pay for the balance. Not when I can order online cheaper and faster. In other words: I would like to give £250 a year worth of business to any of my local stores, but there is zero incentive for me to do so. - martin
I had a small music shop a couple of years ago, just as the internet was starting to bite. The previous owner used to come in to pick up repairs once a week - he couldn't believe how quickly things were changing. First point - I don't think a lot of the parents of a 12 year olds do go to the local music shop. They go online or pick something up in Argos or Wilkinsons unless they have had some friendly input from a teacher or friend who knows a bit about music. Second point, RRP mark up on most main lines is around 35% - enough to make a comfortable (but not stinking rich) living for an independent shop once all overheads are taken into account. I was getting asked to price match to a point where the mark up would have been 15% - bang on your 20% difference. Thirdly, yes, they are very, very daft - OK, I stocked neither of those but would have bent over backwards to sort them out for you just like I did for my one seven string guitarist and for one guy who had gauges - i.e. heavy top and light bottom strings that no manufacturer made as sets. I think the car dealership is a bit different as they are working on some very strange schemes with the manufacturer so may only seem like they are working on a couple of hundred quid mark up on a £40,000 car.
 25.
The stock issue was one thing I brought up on the business course we done. Now it's all Govt' funded, run and I presume all is taught to a set of guidelines set down so that each agency countrywide teaches the same thing. One thing we were told was to keep stock as low as possible. For financial reasons, stock control and to lower overheads. with the appearance of 24hr next day delivery the say there is no point in having a lot of stock. Just order it as it's needed. Now if this is a business model being pushed countrywide to anyone looking advice to set up or to help recover a failing business is it any wonder the country is going tits up. I could get A squier CV not only cheaper, Last I checked it was around £250 free P&P verses £330 but quicker from Thomanns in Germany 6weeks lead time locally verses 3 days. Too me it's backwards, if you walk into a half empty shop you'll likely think things aren't going to good and of course wonder why. Then notions of bad service or indeed maybe no aftercare if things are going bad. who would use a hop that you can't guarantee is going to keep the strings you want, the first time they run out you'll likely use something else. If you order online and hit 24hr delivery but it takes them 24hr to get it to then send to you would you be happy and use them again? People are used to using Asda and Tescos and getting their whole shop in one place and it being there ready to lift, even the groceries you can get everything with a click online with no waiting for the bottle of Smirnoff whilst they order it in. and IMO it's going to be a "want" that filters down into everything.
I think you've hit at least one nail on the head here; people have become used to convenience and low prices courtesy of supermarkets, major DIY and electronic chains and the internet (I know, I love Amazon), however, there are certain things that really should have more expertise behind the selling of them - musical instruments being a prime example, and here the business plan doesn't work as people are not prepared to pay for that expertise. I'm sure most of the retailers on here are used to doing the whole pitch, demonstration and try out only to be faced with a print out from one of the box shifters and a request to match the price.
