1. Money In My Pocket Night Nurse Never had the fortune to play in a reggae band but put some very popular compilation albums together many years ago. These two were always on the "must have" lists.
2. I went straight to 5 from guitar - had been playing rhythm guitar in a Big Band for years so was used to playing Eb, Bb and Ab, so was never comfortable playing open strings. I find for D (and even E without playing open) the five is the perfect option, otherwise you end up in too high a register.
3.
This is a modern 70`s re-issue which are generally very good basses. The irony is that I have an original `77 Jazz that is an absolutely fabulous playing and sounding bass. Some of the 70`s stuff was very poor, I have seen quite a few examples! However, these modern reissues are usually good.
Sorry, did mean to be supportive - was just being lighthearted in suggesting they had been very authentic in making a 70's reissue - remembering the days when Lion House on Tottenham Court Rd was full of some really nasty stuff!
4. The other shop may be right - 70's models probably were unplayable and had such a bad reputation - funny how so many people have no forgotten that. Anyway, the guy doesn't deserve you! Just remember there will be an awful lot of customers who do - and appreciate it. I remember getting an ESP guitar in when I had my shop, it had a floyd rose trem. Unfortunately there was no upward angle on the neck so you couldn't set it up at all. ESP argued until they were blue in the face that it was OK - until I refused to pay for it.
5. Hi Gary, That looks really interesting - must come along - I'll subscribe to your newsletter as I'm not that far away. Welcome to the site. Mike
6. $500 was a lot of money in 1978 - £2,800 in 2009 is as well
7.
Did you say trades? Hmmm... ..fer wot kinda thing/s?
Need something 4 ohms to go with my Yamaha head - otherwise, what did you have in mind?
8. If we can't convert you there is NO hope! Welcome to the forums. Mike
9.
A guy called William Robinson played on a some of their tracks - might be him? Good stuff. Garry
Thanks Garry - yes, only credits I can find are for William Robinson (although I doubt it was my late Father in Law)! or group leader, Eugene Record. It's a real shame when, in this age of having everything at your fingertips, you can't find out more on someone like this with obviously a huge talent. Mike
10. Just heard this on the radio and thought I'd share it - lovely old school bass line and really great sound (to my ageing ears). Can't find out who the player is yet but will carry on looking - anyone out there know? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LWFLKj4CyyY
11. Just listened to the start of Paul Jones Radio 2 Blues show - what are these people on - every cliche in the book, string bends way, way out of tune, ego pouring out of the radio. I loved playing guitar but just couldn't stand the idea of music as competition! So happy being at the lower end so to speak.
12. Just seen something I REALLY want, so another price reduction to see if this will go part fund the new BC acquisition. I have this lovely Aria, it's the discontinued 303/5, Korean built, bolt on, ash top on alder body. About 2003/4. Original retail £549. Great bass, great neck, but I'm a bit of a big girls blouse and found it got heavy towards the end of the night - it's not really heavy (think about 9lb (4.4Kg)), just didn't sit right with me balance wise. Small amount of "imperfections" - Battery compartment lid missing, 5 way selector only works in 4 positions, some strange buckle rash on the back which I have tried to illustrate, and a very small dink on the edge of the neck at 4th fret. Missed out on the Yamaha I had my heart set on, but now something else has really caught my eye. Cash price now just £180 Trade - Lightweight fretless possibly? Mike
13. Enjoying having your Pumas here at the moment - they sure gave us (England) a run for our money!
14.
Yep but at least the drum machine has a volume control.
And you only have to punch the information into it once.....
15. Notice that none of his feedback is as a seller. I'd ask lots of questions - date, serial number - is it CIJ or MIJ etc. I'm sure there's usually more on the headstock than the Fender logo but I'm sure there are others out there with better knowledge than me.
16. Hi Sam, Just found this via another thread: http://www.playjazznow.com/bassist.html Where the Abersold series fell down for me was that it was for lead instruments - this looks like it's going to break you in gently into the rhythm section. I'm definitely going to try some. Mike
17. I had a good experience with Wunjo in Denmark Street with a Yamaha SG 3000. Their communication wasn't great but they got the sale quickly and got top dollar for it. Since then my brother used them to sell his junk shop bargain - a 64 Rivoli - again, got a really good price. I think they have standardised their commission to 20%. They also like slightly different stuff.
18.
I heard Hit Me With Your Rythm Stick was speeded up quite substantially taking it up from E to F. Common practice in the 70s to do this to give songs more punch.
Dave Robinson at Stiff was notorious for this - anyone see Tracey Ullman on the Stiff documentary on BBC 4 recently - she said it gave her real problems on TOTP.
19. Amazed that no-one has come up with Band of Gold or Young Hearts Run Free - the classic faux pas that we used to get all the time when I worked in a record shop (remember them - that's one for the Fook, I'm old thread)!
20. Hope this isn't breaking forum etiquette but, I've got one of these: http://www.dv247.com/assets/products/56718_l.jpg and one of these: http://www.guitarampkeyboard.com/en/81945 which are both amazing but were from my 6 string days, not much call for them with an EUB! Let me know if they are of interest as I'm having a bit of a clear out and open to offers.
21.
How much for postage?
PM'd
