1.
I've got a couple of Fender P basses that are really light, however, due to this the headstocks feel heavy on the strap and make my shoulder ache a bit, whereas my super heavy Stingrays are far more well balanced and so feel more comfortable on the strap due to the more centred distribution of weight. I think it's more about balance than total weight and a good wide, padded strap (Comfortstrapp, Mono straps, Slapstrap [super wide]).
Got to agree with Ezbass here - balance is crucial. My Aria 404 used to dig in on the (very wide) strap and I would be flagging after an hour and a half. Now use a Cort which weighs in pretty much the same but I can wear it for much longer with no problems at all.
2. Hi Geoff, Having torn myself away from your avatar (big Guinness fan of course), may I be so bold to suggest my very nice Korean built Aria that's up for sale on here - I'm sure the neck is along the lines of what you are looking for: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=69115 Sorry for the shameless commercialism! Mike
3. The other factor that you have no control over where tone is concerned (if playing live of course) is the room (and the mercy of a sound engineer if you're gigging at that level)!
4.
Is this a repeat of the (very good) series from about 12 or so years ago?
Doesn't look like it - Alan Shypton is the current presenter of Jazz Library so I'd have thought it was a current show. I only heard about it via a Radio 3 trailer - we've banned Simon Mayo in our house so it was humming away in the background and all of a sudden that distinctive sound cut through the dinner preperation and washing machine so I scurried off to look it up so the link is all the scant information I have.
5. In case this hasn't been pointed out before: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00qf7jz
6. It sure does - pure class being able to make something so slow and empty groove like that. Great post.
7. Welcome Steff - don't think you caused offence, you've just encountered the general banter of this place. There are also a lot of people on here who are unhealthily into bass gear. Enjoy the forums and beware of the humour! Mike

9. Crafter BA 580 - bowl back job, not the greatest unplugged but do a great job plugged in - look for one with an LR Baggs pick-up.
10. Just sold Stuart some strings, great comms, exceptionally quick payment, great person to do business with - thanks Stuart. Mike
11. Just imported Easy Star All-Stars and Pink Floyd into I-tunes and am listening to Dark Side of the Moon v Dub Side of the Moon back to back - 'fraid to say it's 1-0 up to the All-Stars
12. A Dressing of Luthiers (but then again some of them refer to it as stoning which wouldn't work)!
13.
Fender "close enough" does'nt have the same ring to it.
Surely that'll be the Close Enough for Jazz?
14.
I checked these out - there's a (not very good) clip on youtube of someone demonstrating one. And there's one for sale on ebay (or there was t'other day anyway). I'd be very interested if I could afford one in addition to buying something more conventional, but for now I'm only in a position to get one instrument. And I'm a bit put off by the thought of not being able to play it standing up! But I'd love to try one, so if anyone knows of one in the Leeds/North Yorkshire area I'd love to know... Thanks.
Shame the clip is no good - one of the loudest basses acoustically, and, although I never heard it in a gig setting, the pickup sounded fine in the shop. Is it worth trying Hobgoblin in Leeds?
15.
Texas Twister - Little Feat (a couple of AWFUL edits) We Hold On - Rush (an apalling edit) Both quite rotten, but I think Texas Twister was a limitiation of the technology available at the time. Rush have no exuse for theirs, though...!
If you are including edits, Stereophonics/Jools Holland - the single version of Handbags and Gladrags where they edit the brass part to only play once, feels like the rest of the record is tripping up on itself.
16. I've had these left over from when I had my guitar shop - been using them up slowly but have discovered I prefer nickel over stainless steel and also have been playing mainly EUB for the last 9 months. So, they're not factory fresh but they are still in very good condition, all boxed, looking to sell in one go for £24 posted or individually at £7 posted. Thanks, Mike
17.
Although theoretically true........ ok, I'll just stop right there
Yes, sorry, should have put theoretically somewhere in my post - I know it doen't happen with me on my EUB
18. Surely a player has the capability of being more precise on a fretless instrument as they are not impeded by the tempered tuning of a fretted instrument?
19. Have a look here and click on the some examples - this outlaws exactly what your seller is asking you to do. Report them! http://pages.ebay.co.uk/help/policies/feed...-extortion.html
20. Nice - quite a different vibe from what I'm more used to - The Bottle, The Revolution Will Not Be Televised etc, almost got a (and I use this term respectfully) pop leaning to it. Thanks for posting.
21. You should never be asked for feedback until you have received the goods - this should set your alarm bells ringing - check all the safety/fraud stuff on ebay and get an e mail off to them a.s.a.p. Did you use Paypal?
22. Wild outsider, but what about an Ozark Resonator Bass - had one when I had my shop - everyone loved it as it was so unusual. It had a lipstick pickup and was very bright and metallic. Full brass body so very heavy - you wouldn't (possibly couldn't) play it standing up!!
23. Just drove home and Trevor Nelson on Radio Two played this: followed by this: Always loved that period of Crusaders on their own, with Randy Crawford, BB King etc, but this sounded particularly nice tonight. The Esther Phillips version of this Gil Scott Heron track is a new one on me - a very funky discovery. Must try and catch Mr Nelson more often.
24. Welcome to the forum I think the tone/quality thing comes with age and wealth - which is why I've only half caught it Plenty of people on here to share your obsession with. Have fun, Mike
