  1. Difficult one isn't it? As others have said, with MJ, there are so many others involved so when covering a song, how much of it is his? Next, where do we stop? Beatles? And while we are on the subject of domestic abuse, how do you censor Ike Turner without censoring his victim?
  2. @chris_bis absolutely right - but I find it incredibly hard not to "dig in" when gigging. The whole "turn the bass up and play lighter" just seems counterintuitive to me. I saw Nick Fyffe (Jamiroquai bass player) playing a much more rock style with Temperance Movement and really got the whole concept -but I still struggle with it!
  3. Do you wear gloves when labouring? I found when I was a gardener the leather gloves softened my callouses - damned nuisance.
  4. He certainly was!
  5. Enjoyed this on Cerys Matthews show this morning:
  6. Alton Ellis- love the way the guitar gives a flavour of the original white still skanking away on the off-beat.
  7. Thread revival - Youssou N'Dour has probably been posted before, but I thought this track was fabulous, with its very French flavour and Senegalese overtones:
  8. Much like @Dad3353 mine is a hollow bodied 6 string. A no-name Japanese copy of the Gibson Barney Kessel guitar. Very much like this Shaftesbury - probably from the same factory. I can even forgive it the sunburst finish!
  9. Yes, was very impressed with their very upfront pricing. £89 to any of that central area, a bit more inside M25, and ask for price elsewhere. Could work very nicely for my plans.
  10. Likewise, but the problems are at the booking stage.
  11. Yes, it's small bits of furniture I need to send out. Will talk to them soon, so many thanks for flagging them up.
  12. Well I now love them, as if they hadn't let you down I wouldn't have found Lenspeed who look to be exactly who I've been looking for for about 4 years! But yes, that's poor. Funnily enough, I've been let down by UPS booking direct, but always had good service from them when booking through an aggregator.
  13. I may be wrong, but aren't the US still a bit more cash based for things like this?
  14. I did a gig and only knew the band had been paid £700 as the best man asked me about paying as I arrived. I got £100 as part of a 4 piece. Queried it with BL and never got asked to do another gig.
  15. Really useful but of knowledge. Thanks Ped.
  16. That was a long, thin package. I thought the usually coiled them?
  17. Nice top!
  18. Frank that is an absolute gem of a review.
  19. Stuart Maconie sitting in for Craig Charles on the Funk & Soul show last night played some absolute belters, including this from Eddie Kendricks:
  20. No mention of Chris Barber, one of the most important influencers, bring the American originals over and putting shows on.
  21. Seriously fabulous groove in the breakdown on this from Curtis Mayfield:
  22. Zombie thread revival, but I knew we had touched on bassist/producers and I've just come across one who has, IMO, helped to create a folk/pop masterpiece. Daniel Bengston is a multi-instrumentalist and producer of the latest First Aid Kit album Palomino. Yes, the duo are great, but he lifts the two female voices/acoustic guitar format to new heights.
  23. Yes. Sort of nicked it from North Hants Tyres. Took me a couple of looks to work them out.
  24. I would suggest that the Dog & Duck is the ideal place for this, as you can get the feel at very low volume.
