  1. They were very new to the market at the outset of Punk, so availability, price, and even desirability were probably factors.
  2. Slight (well, pretty massive) thread derail, but @skilamalinkdo come and visit the Reggae thread: Https://www.basschat.co.uk/topic/395084-the-reggae-thread/?do=findComment&comment=3968614
  3. You're ok there - it's a jazz band 😉
  4. Hadn't heard much lately, but caught Rodigan yesterday, then 6Music very early this morning, so caught some really nice stuff. This was the track from 6Music, doing a roundup of BBC Introducing. This was from BBC Scotland - nice pop/reggae vibe:
  5. I know he sadly doesn't make them any more, but I'll check which cable @obbm used for my longer bass cable - it is a softer material so doesn't curl or knot itself, and is very tough.
  6. Loads of ways it could be used, but yes, live could be interesting for the sound person!
  7. That's great. Has she used it in any work outside of the demo?
  8. Sorry to hear this @Telebass. Wishing you all the best.
  9. Although I do know of one occasion when this came up trumps for the smaller band. My pal's Prince tribute was booked for a bar in Dublin the night the man himself was playing in town. I think the bar thought they might pick up on those that failed to get tickets. Prince eneded up cancelling at very late notice and my pal ended up with a packed house!
  10. Always a massive frustration. Happened to me once in Arundel. 4 bands on Sunday night within three minutes walk. Would be nice if pubs could work something out between themselves, but I guess there's too much dog eat dog attitude around.
  11. Some might argue this proves the point.
  12. If their turnover has to keep increasing at this rate to keep the same amount (not percentage) of profit, that profit margin will become so small that it will only take the smallest of problems to wipe all the profit out. It also shows my point about the deepest pockets forcing out the smaller players.
  13. Just had a quick look at GAK's figures on Companies House. Now, I'm not the greatest at reading balance sheets, and I know an awful lot of (legal) tweaking is allowed, but they basically made the same profit in 2015 on £10m less turnover as they did in 2020. Like @TheGreek's local shop, this is not sustainable.
  14. The irony is that the laws were brought in to create competition. Everyone (retail) slashed margins to get market share and slowly but surely, the smaller players started to tumble, all the way up to the situation we have now with a handful of behemoths slugging it out. When there is a final winner they will be able to set their price as high as they damned well please, thereby killing off all competition.
  15. Crazy law has just led to a race to the bottom, with the company with the deepest pockets able to offer the biggest discounts. Ironically it is supposed to help competition.
  16. I have it on very good authority that Geldof didn't consider the Rats to be Punk. Great track, great bass line.
  17. Ooh,as a kid I had a Japanese no-name Gibson Barney Kessel copy - very much the same shape. Looking forward to this one progressing.
  18. I was due to be rehearsing tonight. All agreed to lateral flow tests, but my son (back from university) felt I'll and has tested positive so now isolating. I think testing is worthwhile. Haven't got any further than that yet.
  19. Thinking about this thread again this morning, and it occurred to me one of my favourite bands Tedeschi Trucks have always mixed and matched originals and covers. Another great act that also did this was the late Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings. Good enough for them...
  20. The former unfortunately.
  21. I tried one in Bass Direct and was shocked at how quiet it seemed compared to everything else I tried.
