  1. Really enjoying this. Thanks for posting. Oh, and fabulous custom SG the guitarist is playing (but probably shouldn't say that on a bass forum)!
  2. Can be almost anything. Mozart Grand Mass in Cm, Christine & the Queens Girlfirend, Bob Dylan Tangled up in Blue, and often stuff I've never heard before. Edit - Inspired by this thread... ...here's a really feel great version of Hugh Masekela's Grazing in the Grass. Try listening to this with a scowl!
  3. Had the pleasure of working on the release of this compilation of Hugh Masekela's early work, which led to an invitation to the announcement at the South African embassy of Viva South Africa, a concert with Masekela, Miriam Makeba and Yvonne Chaka Chaka (which, unfortunately I couldn't go to). The three of them at the end of the presentation, unplanned, got up and sang Nkosi Sikelel i'Afrika. The significance of this being sung in the embassy was so powerful I think something got into my eye! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stimela_(album)
  4. Blimey I'm fickle. Really wanted to like Buena Onda, but I really don't like when bands do reggae versions of Jazz and don't swing. When they got in to the recognisable bit of Caravan those staccato notes were killing me! On the other hand, The Skints used a female voice doubling some of the lead vocal - a bit like Housemartins. Not a common Reggae motif at all, but this time I loved it! To clarify, I'm not saying there are things that should or should not be done in a Reggae setting, it's just what I'm hearing.
  5. Found two of my favourite artists in the last three or so years on Later - Fantastic Negrito and Christine & the Queens. Not a fan of tea though!
  6. Surely it should be Everybody was Kung Fu Riesling...
  7. Loving Village Soul and your cover is fabulous!
  8. It's a case of do either need to be better? Original version is fabulous - great vocal, but due to familiarity it had possibly lost a lot of its message. Frankie's version injected a new urgency into it. Carry on enjoying both!
  9. I know we've had the 'any cover of Dylan is better than the original' which I don't agree with, but I do find there are more covers of Beatles songs I like in preference to the originals. This is a favourite: Best make a quick exit now...
  10. That's just weird. But weird isn't a bad thing in my book.
  11. Again, another great example - I completely disagree with your comment on Dylan. Great how subjective this all is!
  12. Wow, fair play to you. Thought that would have been on most people's (including mine) worst ever lists.
  13. Well there's this glorious thing: Followed by a dreadful interpretation by an amazing singer, but that arrangement!!! And then rescued by this superb version:
  14. Excuse the self indulgence, and yes it is more on the Ska side of things, but this is the latest release by my nephew's band, and I think it is the best thing they have done so far - a session for Rodigan on BBC1 Xtra recorded at Maida Vale.
  15. Mine too (bucket list). Not giving up hope (big enough stages).
  16. Tedeschi Trucks Band. Saw them at the Palladium last year and the two drummers worked beautifully together. Sounded fabulous.
  17. Not as big financial win as most on here, but when I had my guitar shop I got one over Crack Converters who were selling a really nice Japanese Fender Strat for £199. Got them down to £180 as the whammy bar was missing. Put it in my shop, sold three days later for £399 (with a cheap, spare whammy bar).
  18. If that's marketing then why do the ship them with rounds?
  19. I'd check out Jon Shuker's courses. He's a great builder, and I've heard great things about his course on here in the past. East Midlands as well, so not the other end of the country for you.
  20. Afraid I didn't get that far. Glad you're not keen on the drummer as I think you know I don't go around slagging things off. Just didn't get what they were trying to do.
  21. Struggling with this one. I think she is a great player, but the accompaniment is not working for me.
  22. 1959 - he was the sax player on the Dave Brubeck original, along with the absolutely incredible Joe Morello on drums. Strangely I have no Idea who the bass player was - 🤔 This one ^ for me is the nicest version, as they don't try and make it sound like the jazz version, so the 4/4 timing is OK. Can't see why someone couldn't make a 5/4 reggae version - Easy Star All Stars managed 7/4 on Money.
