  1. A friend just posted this on facebook - great 52 minute documentary free from the BFI. https://player.bfi.org.uk/free/film/watch-ian-dury-1983-online?fbclid=IwAR2-t1TMLoqhaR-212MHnDZPKwhWlCOCRVrwkVK45K2erF85hsfio5TLhJ0
  2. I know a DJ booking service that has a 'must play' 'this is what we like' and 'don't play even if the bride's mother requests it' section of their booking form.
  3. They were obliged to due to an agreement between the BBC and the MU. What happened in reality was the band would book in to a studio. The MU would come down to see the recording in process. Th erecord company would then take the MU rep to the pub and get back just in time for the "new" recording to be handed over, which of course was just a fresh copy of th emaster. IIRC this would not have been an issue with non UK acts.
  4. Cracking gig this afternoon at Blues at Barleylands - a regular Saturday afternoon club in Billericay. Great turnout with members paying £6 a ticket. A real testimony to the club management, proving that if a venue can build a reputation then the punters will come, and pay for the privilige. We played a couple of great sets, mix of originals and crowd pleasing blues/rock covers. First time out as a three piece, worked really well, and got an amazing response from the audience.
  5. This! Time for a new band @uk_lefty 😮
  6. Only if the original is never heard again (please)!
  7. But her most well known song is itself a cover 🤔
  8. Great excuse for a Thunderbird!
  9. Heard this on the radio and it dawned on me that this never makes the list of either essential songs for covers bands or oh no, not that again. Only ever heard it once played at a jam night and it went down a storm. Does anyone include this in their set? Gratuitous link...
  10. I've got a five string set on my Shuker fretless and would never describe the E as dull.
  11. You hiding Gladys Knight's backing vocalists in there?
  12. Must admit it is mainly the grooves and clever use of some amazing rsamples that is what I like most, however, sometimes the rap itself can transform a song - Empire State of Mind being a good example; when I hear the Alicia Keys solo version I'm always anticipating the different texture as it were of the rap. Cultural appropriation - whole new thread (and I think it would get locked very quickly), but I do think the term should be cultural misappropriation.
  13. @merlin2 is a bit of a fan I believe.
  14. Very nice. Checked out the original track that has been sampled, and in my mind this builds and improves on it.
  15. I do have a sense of humour thanks. I also have a sense of respect to other artists, even if I'm not a fan of their music.
  16. Go wherever it takes you! Looking back over the thread I think pretty much every era has been covered.
  17. Possible, but at 56 I'm probably not DJ Shadow's core market! I also love Tony Bennet, Led Zeppelin and Mozart's Grand Mass is one of my favourite pieces of music. Perhaps I'm just odd.
  18. Just saddened that this time around there has been such peurile negativity. Any sensible criticism would be welcome, but comparing DJ Shadow to roadworks, or the lame 30/35 second "quips" is not the level of discussion I'd expect from fellow musicians.
  19. Seems like some folk can't cope with two positive threads about rap at the same time. Guess I revived this at the wrong moment.
  20. Just watched. What a fantastic performance. Thanks for posting @ClassicVibes
  21. Thread revival because of the love being shown on the Brits thread for Dave, and also because I've heard this stunner a few times recently.]
