Steed basses- 1960 blonde stack knob J style bass
wesfinn replied to wesfinn's topic in Build Diaries
yes Gil Yaron! he is a master! He's also a very nice guy as he has given me some info and advice over email when i started doing the repro thing. The 1" neck depth is because I am a Precision player and no matter how much I try I can't get on with a thin neck profile on a Jazz! I did say I wouldn't be building from scratch and this is still true...I just started this over a year ago and have been to busy to finish it haha. -
Hey mate. Cheers. Spray cans can give a great result try www.manchesterguitartech.co.uk

Steed basses- 1960 blonde stack knob J style bass
wesfinn replied to wesfinn's topic in Build Diaries
Thought I would resurrect this thread as I have had some time to do some more work on this bass. The neck is awaiting the fingerboard to be radiused and fretted before I profile the back of the neck. Going to give this a chunky profile (1 inch thick!!) Last week I managed to make the 5/32" truss rod and get the brazilian rosewood fingerboard on. I will post some pictures next time I get back to the workshop. but the flame neck is going to be a looker! -
I dunno, maybe it's because I don't buy into the whole vintage instrument thing. Technology's moved a long way in the last 50 years and it doesn't make sense to me to fork out more for an instrument made using old techniques and out of date machines than for a modern one. If they genuinely were better, they'd still be made using the same methods.
I think the reason people like the old way of building is because of the small imperfections and the hands on approach. Your right in the sense that a CNC can make a better guitar that a person because the tolerances are are so precise. Its just not cost effective to build them the old way big scale either. The reason i make fender replicas isn't because I want to rip off an old guitar but because I feel as though i'm recreating history. Which is why I go to extremes such as making my own truss rods etc it's all an experience for me. If I could have any job in the world it would be working for Fender in 50's and 60's. Every thing they did was so ahead for its time and they could make a guitar almost as quickly as a cnc nowadays. What this guy is doing on ebay I have no problem with as he is open about it. I don't agree with the date stamp though, I feel it is a bit unnecessary. any way heres a nice little video for you all to remember the good old days http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nswcAPvH0P8 -
I'd love to see how it compares to herb's one... as his does feel like a mini DB...
It doesn't feel like a db...just a really great Jazz bass! I'm a working musician so need my basses to be set up to play exactly as I ned them too. I'm sure if you put the action up super high and some tape wounds on it it'd be close! The main thing about the bass is that it really nails the tone!

a couple of things stand out to me as a bit iffy: 1)no dowels on the rear of the bass where the template was fixed for pin routing 2)looks like the body is possibly joined in the centre (might just be the grain though, but does look like a centre join to me) Never know though as the pictures are pretty rubbish. you;d definitely have to view this and take it apart before parting with your money!
It will get gigged, as soon as I get an electric gig! No babying at all planned. I play DB in my current band, Rattlin Bone, so there's no opportunity to use it in anger at the mo'
If you need it used in anger mate I can gig it for you to keep it warm hahaha!

Can a warped 60s Fender celluloid s/p be unwarped?
wesfinn replied to Clarky's topic in Repairs and Technical
have you checked to see how much it has shrunk over all already? if its been off the bass for ages and not screwed to anything you might have major issues getting the screws in now. Applying heat the the guitar will more than likely cause more shrinkage in the long run. Wes -

I never use open strings apart from the E....I dont really use any strings other than the E and the A either!
-
I love the feel of them when playing them at work but I just don't know if I'd ever want to take one out over a P bass or a Jazz! Maybe I'll look into a rikenfaker

I have a massive want for a rickenbacker 4003! It happens every year...I just know deep down I wouldn't use it! Or would I...............?
May I ask how you make the exposed wood on the back look aged? I'm relicing my Jazz and while I'm only going for subtle wear, there's a couple of spots where I've gone back to the wood and it sticks out like a sore thumb! Cheers Alex
theres loads of things you can use. I use black liquid shoe polish on a rag, wipe it over and straight off again. Fender use a similar kind of thing i think as it looks the same. the key with any relicing is be subtle with what you are doing as it is very easy to go too far!
Looks fab, Wes! Out of interest why did you take the Fender decal off? It was a real Fender neck after all! I imagine you will have a few cheeky PMs making offers on this. Great work
Haha, I thought you might ask that! I have ordered a new decal for it. I just had to strip the original finish off the face of the headstock to make the radius where the rosewood and maple meet.
