[/quote] Nothing facetious about it, we are talking analogue values that can readily be measured & justified, tyre performance or components in a signal path. The air for 20p may well be 'better', how would you know without testing & comparing? Otherwise you're just jumping to conclusions.

If you upgrade any components, not just on a bass, to ones of 'top spec' you surely expect an improvement? Otherwise why waste money buying 'better' pick ups, or top quality strings over cheap ones? Why pay for quality tyres on your car? They're just black round things right? A very important point made by the OP is that if you're changing pick ups, usually at considerable expense, you may well not get the improvement you expect if your wiring + all the components in the signal path, (not just pots), capacitor, wiring & soldering are not up to a high standard. You can't deny that.

Horses for courses, GHS Precision Flats for P-Bass, TI Jazz Flats for Jazz bass, for me they don't suit the other way round. GHS Black Nylons when I want that silky tone, these work on P's & J's. GHS are expensive in the UK but easy to get direct from the states, TI's also costly but worth the money every time. Status Hot Wires I'd vote best value for money though, all rounders - really top class flatwounds at very sensible price, usually posted next day

As I said to another chatter the other day - I've had 4 (i think) Mexican P-s - none of them were 'keepers', nothing wrong with as such, sold them here & I believe the buyers are very happy with, but my USA's are staying. The choice is yours, I'd say USA if you can afford it & want a player + a keeper
