1.
No that's slightly facetious. But continuing the analogy, when we are speaking about the musical response of pots you might as well be saying to your tyre guy "don't get the air for your tyres here, it's free. The garage round the corner charges 20p air... it's bound to be better".
Nothing facetious about it, we are talking analogue values that can readily be measured & justified, tyre performance or components in a signal path. The air for 20p may well be 'better', how would you know without testing & comparing? Otherwise you're just jumping to conclusions.
 2. If you upgrade any components, not just on a bass, to ones of 'top spec' you surely expect an improvement? Otherwise why waste money buying 'better' pick ups, or top quality strings over cheap ones? Why pay for quality tyres on your car? They're just black round things right? A very important point made by the OP is that if you're changing pick ups, usually at considerable expense, you may well not get the improvement you expect if your wiring + all the components in the signal path, (not just pots), capacitor, wiring & soldering are not up to a high standard. You can't deny that.
 3. A big thank you to all the mods & admin that have been + a big welcome to all those new to be. Thanks for keeping this place great & all the work you put in that goes mostly unnoticed. Cheerz, John
 4. I made a P-bass wiring kit for Tim, it was a pleasure dealing with him all the way, great comms, instant payment, all the things that make dealing on here so good. No hesitation in recommending this fine fellow to all. Cheerz, John
 5.
One of John's excellent Jazz bass wiring loom bought. I never knew that decent pots (and soldering) could make such a difference to the sound of a bass. It sounds great! Make sure your control plate is made for the larger CTS pots. Mine wasn't so I needed to get the old file out. Gareth
Just thought I'd say - if you have a control plate with holes too small for CTS pots, you can send it to me - I'll modify it & build your kit directly onto it, or I can supply a suitable plate. Cheerz, John Whilst I'm here, I'd also like to say thanks guys for all the good feedback, it's a pleasure dealing with you all
 6.
A rather fantastic Zon legacy Standard (bolt on neck) for sale in Edinborough with an absolute bargain buy it now price of £799! http://www.ebay.co.u...=item4d03b21a40
Local collection welcome - go get it
 7. Horses for courses, GHS Precision Flats for P-Bass, TI Jazz Flats for Jazz bass, for me they don't suit the other way round. GHS Black Nylons when I want that silky tone, these work on P's & J's. GHS are expensive in the UK but easy to get direct from the states, TI's also costly but worth the money every time. Status Hot Wires I'd vote best value for money though, all rounders - really top class flatwounds at very sensible price, usually posted next day
 8. I thought it was solved? Dave Swift, Jool's bassist
 9. A regular on http://www.bbc.co.uk/later/ ?
 10.
None of us have any idea who this bloke is: Are we missing something??
Was Dudley Moore on piano? 'Cos in this shot the bassist looks to me like Peter Cook
 11. Is it Bill Black? Sorry i could only watch the backing singers
 12. Sold a Jazz bass wiring kit to Gareth, great guy to deal with, perfect comms & instant payment, a real pleasure dealing with him, top fellow! Cheerz, John
 13. Coventry is too far for me I'm afraid but no worries about lines, I started playing aged 14 with a bass my Dad made for me, couldn't afford fret wire in those days, must admit it had pencil marks though Looking forward to more pics. Cheerz, John
 14. Very nice (in a mirror) I'm seriously looking at one of their fretless, seem like excellent VFM Cheerz, John
 15. Thanks Chris - "With all respect to any buyer's, come & try first." - where are you? Cheerz, John

 18.
£862 from Thomann - bargain! I thought brand new Fender Ps were well over a grand at present.
http://www.thomann.de/gb/fender_american_standard_pbass_rw_ow.htm I had a job finding it 2nd time around, but there it is!
 19.
Think I'm going to go with my craving and get one of these on order: http://www.ebay.com/...d-/110900217512

At that price, even with shipping and customs charges, that will be a great buy.

Wow! that is good value. Lucky I have my GAS in check for now.

Nah I don't think I'll get one imported, more than likely ask a store to match Thomann
From ebay/USA that'll end up costing you an estimated £988.75 all in - from Thomman £862 53 - simple choice!
 20. Mark D Phillips....... (Guitar fixer) - - - - well you didn't 'fix' this one did you
 21. Well done Deb, don't spend too long away from Mr Gilmour now Enjoy, Cheerz, John
 22. I would also have a look at the American Specials, you might find some bargains around, 1st I found for example: http://www.guitarguitar.co.uk/bass_guitars_detail.asp?stock=11010712231031
 23. As I said to another chatter the other day - I've had 4 (i think) Mexican P-s - none of them were 'keepers', nothing wrong with as such, sold them here & I believe the buyers are very happy with, but my USA's are staying. The choice is yours, I'd say USA if you can afford it & want a player + a keeper
 24.
By far the best method is to take them apart and rewind the coil yourself using a hand drill.
